Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew About My Signature

The stranger stopped three feet from our table.

He was probably in his late fifties, with neatly combed silver hair and a narrow scar near his left eyebrow. His charcoal suit was expensive but understated. He placed his briefcase on an empty chair and looked first at me, then at Daniel.

“Good evening, Sarah.””

I had never seen him before.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Robert Hayes. I'm a financial compliance consultant. I've worked with Daniel's company on several occasions.””

Vanessa made a small choking sound.

Daniel immediately stood.

“You need to leave.””

Robert didn't even turn toward him.

“I'm here because Mrs. Bennett deserves an explanation.””

“Whatever you think you know, you're mistaken.””

Robert opened his briefcase.

“Then this should be a very straightforward conversation.””

My father spoke through the phone.

“Mr. Hayes, this is Richard Bennett. Before you discuss any confidential financial information, I want you to understand that my daughter's attorney will be reviewing everything you provide.””

“Of course, Mr. Bennett. That's precisely why I came.””

He removed a folder and placed it on the table.

Daniel reached for it.

Robert covered the folder with his hand.

“Please don't.””

Daniel's face twisted.

“You work for me.””

“I was retained by your company to review financial reporting discrepancies. I am not employed to conceal them.””

“You signed a confidentiality agreement!””

“Yes,” Robert replied.

“And I intend to honor it. That's why I'm not discussing your company's unrelated business information. But documents potentially bearing Mrs.

Bennett's forged signature are another matter. Her attorney can determine the proper next steps.””

The word forged seemed to strike Daniel physically.

“Stop saying that!””

Robert remained calm.

“Then provide evidence that the authorization is genuine.””

Daniel had no answer.

I looked at Robert.

“Why did you send me those photographs?””

“Because I reviewed a series of transactions that didn't reconcile with the company's reported expenses. During that review, I found references to a personal investment account that did not appear to belong to the company.””

“Mine.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“I discovered the account's involvement several days ago. I did not know whether you had authorized the arrangement. When I found discrepancies in the supporting documentation, I sought advice about how to proceed.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“So you decided to ambush me at a restaurant?””

Robert's expression hardened for the first time.

“No. I delivered information to your wife after learning she might be exposed to financial liability without her knowledge.””

I stared at the folder.

“Did Daniel take the money?””

“I cannot responsibly give you a definitive answer tonight. The documents suggest that funds may have been directed toward an account that was not disclosed in the original loan proposal. The bank and the relevant attorneys need to verify the transaction history.””

Vanessa sank into her chair.

Daniel looked at her.

“Don't say a word.””

She stared back at him.

“You told me everything was legal.””

“It is legal.””

“Then why are we sitting here with a man who says it isn't?””

Robert interrupted.

“I haven't made that determination. What I can say is that the records raise serious questions.””

I opened the folder.

The first page contained a transaction summary.

There were dates, reference numbers, and several entries highlighted in yellow.

One line stood out.

*Beneficiary account: joint personal account.*

I recognized the last four digits.

My hands went numb.

“That's Vanessa's account.””

Robert nodded.

“According to the records available to me, yes. It appears to be a joint account associated with Vanessa and Daniel.””

I turned toward my sister-in-law.

“You told me you had no idea where the money was going.””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I didn't know it was your money!””

“But you knew the account existed.””

She covered her face.

Daniel leaned across the table.

“Sarah, this is a business transaction. You don't understand the structure.””

“Then explain it.””

“It's complicated.””

“Try.””

He looked at the twenty-three relatives watching him.

For a moment, I thought he might finally tell the truth.

Instead, he pointed at Robert.

“This man has been trying to sabotage my company for months. He's bitter because I questioned his work.””

Robert removed another sheet from his folder.

“Then perhaps you'd like to explain this authorization.””

He placed it in front of Daniel.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

*Robert Hayes.*

I stared at it.

“That's your signature?””

Robert nodded.

“Yes. I signed as a witness to a meeting where Daniel presented documents related to the proposed financing.””

“Did you witness me signing?””

“No.””

The room went silent.

Daniel took a step backward.

Robert continued.

“I witnessed Daniel signing a declaration that the supporting documents had been obtained with the account holder's consent. I did not witness Mrs. Bennett signing anything.””

I looked at the paper.

“So he claimed I had authorized it, and you witnessed his declaration?””

“Correct. At the time, I had no reason to believe his declaration was false. I have since requested the original supporting documents.””

Daniel's voice rose.

“You're twisting everything!””

Robert turned toward him.

“Then explain why the authorization includes a date when your wife was recorded as being outside the country.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Six weeks earlier, I had been in London for a property-management conference.

Daniel had stayed in Atlanta.

I had called him every evening.

He had told me he missed me.

He had asked when I would be home.

And apparently, while I was thousands of miles away, someone had submitted paperwork claiming I had personally authorized the use of my investment account.

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Dad, I have my passport records. I have my flight confirmation.””

“Keep all of them,” he said.

“Your attorney will need them.””

Daniel stared at me.

“Sarah, I can explain.””

“You had six weeks to explain.””

“I was trying to protect our future!””

“Whose future?””

He opened his mouth.

I continued.

“Mine? Yours? Vanessa's?””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Stop acting like I planned all this!””

I turned toward her.

“You accepted money connected to my account.””

“I thought Daniel had arranged a legitimate loan!””

“Then why did you tell him my father would never find out?””

She froze.

Daniel closed his eyes.

It was the first time I had seen him look defeated.

Robert gathered the loose documents.

“There is one additional matter Mrs. Bennett should know.””

My father answered immediately.

“Go ahead, Mr. Hayes.””

Robert glanced at Daniel before speaking.

“The joint account was not the only destination identified in the preliminary transaction records. There was a second transfer request.””

My heart pounded.

“To whom?””

“The request lists a beneficiary identified as Richard Bennett.””

I stared at the phone.

“Dad?””

My father said nothing for a moment.

Then his voice returned, low and controlled.

“I did not authorize any transfer into my personal account.””

Daniel suddenly shouted, “Because it never happened!””

Robert held up a hand.

“The request was submitted. I cannot confirm whether it was executed.””

“Who submitted it?”” I asked.

Robert turned the page.

“The originating instruction bears a digital authorization attributed to Daniel.””

My husband looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

But the next sentence was worse.

“The request also includes a note indicating that the transfer was intended to create the appearance that Mr. Bennett had received part of the funds.””

My father inhaled sharply.

I could barely speak.

“Why would anyone make it look like my father received money?””

Robert looked directly at me.

“That is the question your attorneys need to investigate.””

Then he removed one final document from his briefcase.

It was a copy of an email chain.

At the top, Daniel's name appeared beside a message sent three weeks earlier.

The subject line read:

*If Sarah discovers the account.*

I looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“Don't read that.””

I read it anyway.

If she finds out, we'll say her father approved the structure. He has the resources to absorb the loss, and she won't want to drag the family through a public investigation.

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything.

Then I looked at my husband.

He had not merely hidden the money.

He had planned to blame my father.

And as I watched Daniel realize that I had finally seen the truth, I understood something even more painful.

He had never believed I would leave him.

May you like

He had believed I would protect him.

No matter what he did.
