Chapter 13: The Brother My Father Hid From Me
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
I stared at my mother's face on the phone.
"Mom, what did you just say?""
She wiped her eyes.
"Your father had a son before he met me. His name is Benjamin Edward Bennett.""
I shook my head.
"No. Dad never mentioned having another child.""
"He didn't want you to know.""
"Why?""
My mother looked toward someone outside the camera's view.
"Because Benjamin was involved in a terrible situation when he was young. Your father sent him away to protect him.""
I felt anger rising.
"Protect him from what?""
"From the consequences of his own decisions.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She was standing beside me, listening carefully.
"How old is he?""
"Forty-five.""
"Where is he?""
"London.""
I almost laughed.
"Of course. Another person hiding in London.""
My mother didn't react.
"Olivia, Benjamin has been involved with Northbridge Capital for years. He inherited a portion of the original investment structure through your father's first family.""
"Then why is he financing Daniel?""
"Because Benjamin believes Daniel is helping him reclaim something that belongs to him.""
"What?""
"The company.""
I looked at the document again.
Benjamin's name appeared beside a clause referring to an original family trust.
My father had established it before Bennett Enterprises became successful.
The trust included provisions for both children.
But there was something unusual.
My name appeared beside seventy percent of the voting rights.
Benjamin's name appeared beside a separate financial interest that would become active only under certain circumstances.
I turned the page.
A handwritten note from my father appeared.
Benjamin may inherit a financial interest, but he must never be given control of Olivia's shares.
I looked at my mother.
"Why?""
"Because your father believed Benjamin would eventually try to take the company.""
I stared at her.
"And you knew this?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you allow him to finance Daniel?""
"Because I thought I could negotiate with him.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Everyone in this family thinks they can negotiate with people who want to destroy us.""
My mother lowered her eyes.
"Olivia, I made mistakes.""
"That's an understatement.""
She held up another document.
"This is the original agreement between your father and Benjamin. It contains something important. Benjamin agreed that he would never challenge your ownership as long as he received a separate financial distribution.""
"Did he?""
"He received it for years. But recently, the payments stopped.""
I looked at Evelyn.
"Why?""
She answered quietly.
"Because Daniel redirected the distributions through Northbridge.""
I closed my eyes.
It was beginning to make sense.
Daniel had promised Benjamin access to Bennett Enterprises.
Patricia had helped arrange the fraudulent transfer.
Richard had provided the financial structure.
Robert had compromised the board.
And my mother had secretly financed parts of the arrangement.
But why had Benjamin waited eleven years?
I looked back at the screen.
"Mom, I want to meet him.""
She hesitated.
"That may not be safe.""
"I'm done having important conversations through secret phone calls.""
"Olivia—"
"I'm coming to London.""
I ended the call.
Evelyn touched my shoulder.
"Your father wanted you to know the truth eventually.""
"Did he know Benjamin was working with Daniel?""
"Yes. That's why he created the protection agreement.""
I picked up the original document.
"Then we're going to find Benjamin.""
Two days later, I arrived in London with Evelyn and an independent legal team.
We met my mother at a private banking facility near Mayfair.
When she walked into the conference room, I almost didn't recognize her.
Her hair was shorter. Her face was thinner. There were deep lines around her eyes.
But she was my mother.
I stood.
She stopped several feet away.
"Olivia.""
I wanted to run into her arms.
Instead, I asked the question that had been destroying me for two days.
"Did you ever stop loving me?""
Her face crumpled.
"Never.""
"Then how could you leave me?""
She began crying.
"I thought I was saving your life.""
I finally stepped forward and hugged her.
It wasn't forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
Afterward, the bank's legal director brought us into a secure records room.
He placed a sealed package on the table.
"Mrs. Bennett, these documents were deposited by your father eleven years ago. They were to be released only upon your personal appearance.""
Inside were original trust certificates, bank statements, and a video recording.
My mother looked at the video file.
"Edward made this shortly before he died.""
I pressed play.
My father's face appeared on the screen.
He looked tired but determined.
"Olivia, if you're watching this, someone has attempted to interfere with your inheritance.""
I covered my mouth.
"Your mother knows the truth about Northbridge. Benjamin knows the truth about the original trust. And Daniel knows more than he has ever admitted.""
My father paused.
"I made a mistake by allowing these people into my life. But I did not make a mistake by trusting you.""
He leaned closer to the camera.
"Remember something. Ownership is not just about money. It's about responsibility. Never allow someone to convince you that you must surrender what you built simply because they are louder than you.""
The video ended.
I was crying.
Then the bank director opened the final document.
It identified the current controlling beneficiary of Northbridge Capital.
I read the name.
Benjamin Edward Bennett.
My half-brother.
But the document contained one additional detail.
He had personally signed an agreement transferring his voting interest to Daniel just three weeks earlier.
I stared at the signature.
"Why would he do that?""
The bank director looked uncomfortable.
"Because he believed the transfer was temporary.""
My mother shook her head.
"No. Benjamin knew exactly what he was doing.""
I turned toward her.
"How do you know?""
She removed her phone and showed me a photograph.
It showed Benjamin sitting beside Daniel at a private dinner.
The date was the night before the gala.
My mother whispered:
"Your brother is coming to Atlanta tomorrow.""
Then my phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Olivia. This is Benjamin.""
I held my breath.
He continued.
"I know you've found the documents.""
"Then you know what Daniel is planning.""
"Yes.""
"Are you going to help him?""
He was silent for a moment.
Then he said:
May you like
"No. I'm going to finish what our father started.""
And the call ended.
