Chapter 14: The Man Who Wasn't Dead

Daniel didn't speak for several seconds.

Then he whispered, “No.””

The investigator smiled.

“You always were good at disappearing, Samuel.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Your name is Samuel?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The word barely escaped him.

Marcus stared.

“Dad knew.””

Daniel—Samuel—nodded.

“He knew everything.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You knew who you were.””

“Yes.””

“You knew you were my biological father.””

“Yes.””

“And you watched me marry Adrian?””

His face crumpled.

“I tried to stop it.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Richard threatened you.””

“Richard was dead.””

“He wasn't the only one.””

Silence.

“Adrian?””

Samuel nodded.

“He was working for Richard.””

My hands curled into fists.

“So Adrian knew.””

“Yes.””

“From the beginning?””

“Yes.””

I turned away.

Eight years.

The first conversation.

The first date.

The proposal.

The wedding.

Every kiss.

Every lie.

Every time Adrian told me I was difficult.

Every time he told me my family didn't want me.

It had all been part of something much larger.

“Why me?”” I asked.

Samuel looked at me.

“Because your father left you Northbridge.””

“What?””

“Your legal father knew Richard would come after the company once he died.””

He pointed to the documents.

“Your inheritance wasn't just money.””

I looked down.

“It was control.””

Samuel nodded.

“Your father transferred controlling shares into your trust.””

Adrian hadn't married me for love.

He had married me for Northbridge.

Marcus suddenly looked toward the warehouse entrance.

“Where is Adrian?””

Everyone went silent.

Detective Bennett immediately touched her radio.

“He was in custody.””

“Was?””

She listened.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She lowered the radio.

“Adrian escaped during transport.””

My stomach dropped.

“When?””

“Twenty minutes ago.””

Julian swore.

Samuel looked at me.

“He's coming for you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Claire—”

“He already took everything from me.””

I looked toward the police.

“He doesn't get to decide what happens next.””

Bennett stepped closer.

“We'll protect you.””

My phone vibrated.

A text.

*You finally met your real father.*

Another appeared.

*Now come finish what your father started.*

Then a photograph arrived.

I opened it.

It showed Adrian standing inside a dark office.

Behind him was the portrait of my grandfather.

He was holding a document.

Underneath the photograph was one sentence.

*Midnight. Northbridge headquarters. Come alone.*

Marcus took my phone.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I have to go.””

“You're not going anywhere alone.””

“He'll hurt someone else.””

Samuel stepped forward.

“He wants you afraid.””

I looked at him.

“Then I'll give him something else.””

“What?””

I picked up the sealed final document from the metal box.

“This.””

I had almost missed it.

There was writing on the back.

For Claire only.

I opened it.

Inside was a corporate transfer agreement.

My father had prepared it before his death.

The controlling shares of Northbridge weren't merely mine.

They were held in trust until I discovered the truth about Adrian.

And beneath the signature was a condition.

*Upon proof of marital fraud, coercion, or theft, all authority held by the husband shall be revoked immediately.*

I stared at the words.

Adrian hadn't just lost me.

He was about to lose everything.

Samuel looked over my shoulder.

“He knows about that document.””

“How?””

“Because Richard told him.””

I looked at the clock.

11:21 p.m.

I folded the agreement.

“Then let's give Adrian exactly what he wants.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“Me.””

Samuel shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You've spent your whole life protecting me.””

I took a breath.

“Tonight, let me protect myself.””

At 11:47, I entered Northbridge headquarters.

The building was dark.

The lobby lights flickered.

My heels echoed across the marble floor.

Then the elevator doors opened.

Adrian stood inside.

His suit was torn.

Blood stained his collar.

He smiled.

“Claire.””

I stepped into the elevator.

He pressed the button.

The doors closed.

And then he whispered:

“You really shouldn't have brought the police.””

I looked at him.

“I didn't.””

His smile returned.

But he didn't see the tiny recording device hidden beneath my sleeve.

He didn't know Detective Bennett was listening.

And he certainly didn't know Marcus, Julian, and Samuel were already inside the building.

Adrian leaned closer.

“You're going to sign everything back to me.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

His smile vanished.

“Then I'll tell you what really happened the night your father died.””

I waited.

Adrian's eyes hardened.

“He wasn't the one Richard wanted dead.””

May you like

He paused.

“Samuel was.””
