Chapter 8: The Brother I Never Knew Existed

I found my father in the executive lounge, standing beside a window overlooking the Chicago River.

He turned when I entered.

"Sarah, we need to discuss the trust.""

I held up Eleanor's note.

"We need to discuss something else first.""

His eyes fell on the paper.

For a moment, the room seemed to lose its air.

"Where did you get that?""

"Eleanor.""

My father closed his eyes.

I had seen that expression once before, years earlier, when I'd asked why my mother had kept a locked drawer in her study. He'd told me it contained old legal papers and that I should leave it alone.

Now I understood that my father had been hiding something far more significant.

"Did I have a brother?"" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Did I?""

He walked to the sofa and sat down heavily.

"Yes.""

The word struck harder than Daniel's slap.

I stared at him.

"What do you mean, yes?""

"Your mother had a son before you were born.""

"Where is he?""

My father looked toward the window.

"I don't know.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"You don't know?""

"He was adopted when he was an infant. Your mother made the decision before we married.""

"Why?""

"She was very young. His biological father was a man she had been engaged to before she met me. Their relationship ended badly, and she believed the child would have a better life with another family.""

I sat down opposite him.

"Did you know about him when you married her?""

"Yes.""

"And you never told me?""

"Your mother asked me not to. She wanted to protect his privacy. After she died, I believed it was best to honor her wishes.""

I stared at him in disbelief.

"You let me grow up believing I was an only child.""

"You were her only child with me.""

"That isn't the same thing.""

"No," he admitted.

"It isn't.""

I stood and paced toward the window.

My mother had been gone for fifteen years. I couldn't ask her why she'd kept this secret, why she'd chosen adoption, or whether she'd ever tried to find her son.

But I could ask my father why he had continued hiding the truth.

"Did Eleanor know?""

"Apparently.""

"How?""

"I don't know.""

"Did Daniel know?""

My father hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

"Dad.""

"I suspect he did.""

I pressed my hands against my forehead.

"How could you keep something like this from me?""

"I thought I was protecting you.""

"From what? Having a brother?""

"From a complicated family history that had nothing to do with your life.""

I turned toward him.

"It has everything to do with my life now. Eleanor is using it to threaten my inheritance, Daniel is using it to challenge the company's ownership, and someone has been moving millions of dollars through accounts tied to my mother's trust.""

My father lowered his head.

"You're right.""

I had expected him to defend himself. I had prepared for another argument.

His admission left me with nowhere to direct my anger.

"Do you know his name?""

"Your brother?""

"Yes.""

My father opened a leather folder.

"His name was recorded as Matthew at birth. The adoption records were sealed, but your mother retained a private letter from the attorney who handled the placement.""

He handed me a photocopy.

The letter was dated twenty-nine years earlier. Most of it concerned confidentiality provisions, but a paragraph near the bottom had been underlined in blue ink.

Should the beneficiary ever seek information concerning his biological family, the Hawthorne Trust may be used to facilitate contact, provided that the beneficiary's identity is verified and the relevant estate provisions remain enforceable.

I read the paragraph twice.

"Why would the trust be connected to him?""

My father shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Could he be the other beneficiary Eleanor mentioned?""

"Possibly.""

"Could he be working at Bennett Technologies?""

"I have no idea.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from Robert Harrison appeared.

We've identified the employee who accessed the archived Hawthorne files. Please come back to the conference room immediately.

I showed my father.

He stood.

"Let's go.""

When we returned to the conference room, Robert was waiting with Margaret Ellis and a security officer.

Daniel and Eleanor had not returned.

Robert placed a printed employee profile on the table.

"The archived trust files were accessed using credentials belonging to Matthew Cole, a senior financial systems analyst.""

My heart began pounding.

"Matthew?""

Robert nodded.

"He's been with Bennett Technologies for seven years. He has administrative access to several legacy databases.""

My father sat down slowly.

"Where did he come from?""

"His employment file lists his previous employer as a financial services company in Boston. His background check was completed before the restructuring.""

"Was it verified independently?"" I asked.

"Yes, but the original documents are incomplete. Some records were migrated from the predecessor company's database.""

I stared at the profile photograph.

The man in the picture had dark hair, a narrow face, and eyes that looked strangely familiar.

I couldn't explain why.

Robert continued.

"Matthew accessed the Hawthorne files three weeks before the first suspicious transfer. He also accessed the company's shareholder register on the day your medical authorization was created.""

My father leaned forward.

"Have you spoken to him?""

"Security attempted to locate him this morning. He hasn't reported to work, and his office has been cleared.""

"Cleared by whom?"" I asked.

Robert glanced at the security officer.

"We're reviewing the access logs.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"What happens if Matthew Cole is my brother?""

Robert's expression grew grave.

"Then he may have a legitimate interest in the trust. But that doesn't establish whether he was involved in the transfers.""

My father studied the picture.

"If he's connected to the estate, we need to find him before Daniel or Eleanor does.""

I pointed at the employee profile.

"Can we contact his previous employer?""

"We can try," Robert said.

"But the more important question is why someone with access to the legacy files would disappear immediately after the audit began.""

Margaret Ellis folded her arms.

"Perhaps he's protecting himself. Or perhaps someone warned him.""

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through, low and controlled.

"Sarah Whitmore?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Matthew Cole.""

Every person in the room went still.

I gripped the phone.

"Are you the man who accessed the Hawthorne files?""

"Yes.""

"Are you my brother?""

There was a long silence.

Then he said, "I believe I am.""

My throat tightened.

"Why didn't you contact me?""

"Because I didn't know you existed until six months ago.""

"How did you find out?""

"Your mother's attorney contacted me after discovering a discrepancy in the trust records. He wanted to verify my identity before releasing certain documents.""

"Did you know about the money?""

"I found evidence that the Hawthorne account was being used improperly. I tried to investigate, but someone deleted the original records.""

"Was it Daniel?""

"I don't know.""

"Was it Eleanor?""

Another pause.

"I don't know that either.""

I pressed the phone against my ear.

"Then why did you disappear?""

"Because someone broke into my apartment last night.""

My father stepped closer.

Matthew continued.

"They took my laptop, but they missed a sealed envelope I found in the trust archive. It contains a letter from your mother.""

I felt tears gather behind my eyes.

"My mother wrote to you?""

"Yes.""

"What did it say?""

His voice softened.

"She wanted me to know that giving me up for adoption had been the hardest decision of her life. She wanted to find me, but she was afraid that contacting me would disrupt the family I had grown up with.""

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, the boardroom, the missing money, and Daniel's betrayal disappeared.

There was only the knowledge that my mother had carried a secret grief for years, and that I had never known.

Then Matthew spoke again.

"Sarah, there's something in that letter that concerns the company.""

"What?""

"Your mother believed someone was trying to steal her interest in the original business. She wrote that if anything happened to her, the trust should be protected from a man named Daniel Bennett.""

My stomach turned.

"Daniel?""

"Yes. But the letter was written before you married him.""

I looked at my father.

He had gone pale.

Matthew continued.

"I don't think Daniel created this scheme alone. I think he discovered the trust after marrying you and used Eleanor to gain access to it.""

I swallowed.

"Can you prove that?""

"Not yet. But I have something else.""

"What?""

"A copy of the original trust schedule. It identifies every person entitled to benefit from your mother's retained interest.""

"Who is listed?""

Matthew's answer was barely audible.

"You, me, and one other person.""

I felt my pulse race.

"Who?""

May you like

He took a breath.

"Your mother named Eleanor Bennett as a contingent beneficiary.""
