Chapter 15: The Truth I Finally Chose
I read the journal until sunrise.
Every page felt like opening a locked room.
A room inside Daniel’s mind.
A place I had never been allowed to enter.
At first, I expected more lies.
More excuses.
More proof that he had planned everything.
And there was some of that.
But there was something else.
Something I never expected.
Fear.
Daniel had written about being afraid.
Afraid of aging.
Afraid of failure.
Afraid that he wasn’t enough.
And instead of facing those fears…
He blamed me.
The person who loved him most.
One entry stopped me.
*Delia keeps asking if I’m happy. I hate that question because I don’t know the answer.*
I read it again.
Then another.
*She sees the parts of me I don’t want to see. Vanessa doesn’t ask questions.*
I closed the journal.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Not him.
Never him.
But myself.
For years, I thought the opposite of love was hate.
It wasn’t.
The opposite of love was indifference.
And Daniel had spent years becoming someone I could no longer reach.
Three months later, the divorce was finalized.
The financial investigation continued.
The money was recovered.
Not all at once.
Not easily.
But enough.
Enough to rebuild.
Enough to breathe.
Rachel apologized.
Not once.
Many times.
I accepted her apology.
But I did not return to who I was before.
Some doors close for a reason.
Emily tried too.
She sent letters.
Long ones.
Honest ones.
I read them.
Then I put them away.
Forgiveness did not mean access.
That was something I learned.
Margaret called one evening.
“I miss you.””
I believed her.
That was the hardest part.
Because some people hurt you and still miss you.
Both things can be true.
“I miss who I thought we were,” I said.
She cried.
“So do I.””
I looked out the window.
At my new apartment.
My new life.
My new beginning.
“I hope you find peace.””
“And you?””
I smiled.
“I already did.””
A year after the airport.
I went back.
Not because I needed closure.
Because I wanted to prove something to myself.
I stood above the same glass walkway.
The same view.
The same check-in desks below.
People moved through the airport.
Families.
Couples.
Strangers.
A year ago, I stood there watching my life fall apart.
Now I stood there watching it continue.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
It was Claire.
“You there?””
“Yes.””
“Are you okay?””
I looked through the glass.
And smiled.
“Yes.””
A real yes.
Not one I said to make someone else comfortable.
One I felt.
“You know what’s funny?”” I said.
“What?””
“I spent years afraid of losing Daniel.””
Claire was quiet.
“And?””
“I lost him.””
I watched a plane take off in the distance.
“And I found myself.””
When I ended the call, I stayed there for a while.
Thinking about the woman I used to be.
The woman who apologized for having feelings.
The woman who carried everyone.
The woman who believed being needed meant being loved.
She deserved kindness.
She deserved forgiveness too.
But she didn’t belong here anymore.
My phone buzzed one last time.
A message from an unknown number.
For a second, my heart jumped.
Old habits.
Old fears.
Then I opened it.
It was from Michael.
A simple message.
*The final account was closed. Everything is officially yours.*
I looked at the words.
Everything is officially yours.
Not Daniel’s.
Not his family’s.
Not anyone else’s.
Mine.
I slipped my phone into my pocket.
Then I walked away from the glass.
Not running.
Not escaping.
Just leaving.
Because sometimes the greatest revenge isn’t watching someone lose what they had.
It’s realizing you no longer need what they took.
May you like
And for the first time in ten years…
I was finally going somewhere that belonged only to me.
