Chapter 14: The Day The Truth Came Out

The meeting was supposed to last one hour.

It lasted twelve minutes.

Margaret arrived with Daniel.

Of course she did.

He never came alone.

Not when he needed support.

Not when he needed someone to make him look reasonable.

He walked into the conference room wearing a suit.

The same kind of suit he wore to important moments.

Weddings.

Funerals.

Promises.

Lies.

“Delia.””

I looked at him.

No anger.

No tears.

Nothing.

That seemed to bother him.

“You look different,” he said.

“I am.””

Margaret sat beside him.

“I hope we can handle this maturely.””

I almost smiled.

Everyone wanted maturity after creating chaos.

Michael placed the documents on the table.

“We’re here because of financial misconduct.””

Daniel immediately responded.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

“No,” Michael said.

“It isn’t.””

Daniel looked irritated.

“Delia, why are you doing this?””

I stared at him.

“Doing what?””

“Trying to destroy me.””

The old me would have explained.

The old me would have defended myself.

The new me simply said:

“I’m not destroying you.””

I pointed at the documents.

“I’m showing people what you built.””

Daniel looked at Michael.

“This is ridiculous.””

Michael opened a folder.

“Would you like to explain the account opened under your wife’s name?””

Silence.

Margaret looked down.

Daniel’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Michael placed the document in front of him.

“Your signature.””

Daniel stared.

Then:

“I had permission.””

“No,” I said.

“You didn’t.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t remember.””

That sentence.

That one sentence.

It made everything clear.

He wasn’t just lying.

He was trying to convince me my own memory was wrong.

“I remember everything.””

His lawyer interrupted.

“We should focus on resolution.””

“No.””

Michael’s voice was calm.

“We should focus on facts.””

Then he placed another document down.

The five-year-old plan.

Daniel went completely still.

Margaret looked terrified.

“Where did you get that?””

Daniel’s question was quiet.

Not angry.

Afraid.

I answered.

“From your life.””

His eyes moved to mine.

“You went through my things.””

“You went through my entire future.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael said:

“This document suggests deliberate preparation to separate assets, establish a narrative, and create legal leverage.””

Daniel’s lawyer looked at him.

“Is this yours?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That silence said more than words.

Margaret suddenly spoke.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

“You told me she would never find out.””

The room froze.

I looked at Margaret.

She covered her mouth.

She realized too late.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Mom.””

“You said everything would be handled.””

“Stop.””

“You said she would forgive you.””

“Stop talking.””

But it was too late.

Everyone heard.

The woman who protected him had finally exposed him.

Michael leaned back.

“And there it is.””

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time, he looked scared.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Scared.

The meeting ended shortly after.

Not because everything was solved.

Because the truth had finally entered the room.

Outside the building, I stood on the sidewalk.

The sun was bright.

Strangely bright.

Like the world had no idea what had happened.

Michael stood beside me.

“You know this isn’t over.””

“I know.””

“There will be more.””

“I know.””

He looked at me.

“You’re handling this differently than I expected.””

I smiled.

“How?””

“You’re not trying to get revenge.””

I looked at the building behind us.

“No.””

“What are you trying to do?””

I thought about that.

Then answered honestly.

“I’m trying to get my life back.””

That night, I returned home.

My old home.

But something felt different.

I walked into the kitchen.

And there was a package sitting on the counter.

No return address.

No name.

Inside was a small notebook.

Daniel’s handwriting covered the first page.

But it wasn’t a plan.

It wasn’t a document.

It was a journal.

A journal he had written during our marriage.

I opened the first page.

And the first sentence made my hands shake.

*I knew Delia would eventually leave me.*

I turned the page.

And realized something.

May you like

Daniel’s story had one more secret.

And this one could destroy everything he had built.
