Chapter 9: The Account Nobody Was Supposed to Find
I read Vanessa's screenshot in Ms. Carter's office.
Then I read it again.
The email appeared to have been drafted six weeks earlier and saved in Daniel's personal email account. It referred to a transfer scheduled for the following month and mentioned an account held through an overseas financial institution.
The recipient field contained an address associated with Thompson Advisory.
“Did Vanessa explain how she found this?”” Ms. Carter asked.
I called her.
She answered immediately.
“I was searching my email for the apartment documents Daniel sent me,” Vanessa explained.
“He had logged into his account on my laptop once and forgotten to sign out. I wasn't trying to access anything private, but his inbox was still open.””
“Did you download the email?”” Ms. Carter asked.
“Yes. I saved a copy and took screenshots.””
“Please don't access his account again. Preserve what you already have, including the date you found the message and how you obtained the copy. We'll need to assess whether the material can be used appropriately.””
Vanessa agreed.
When I ended the call, Ms. Carter leaned back in her chair.
“This may be important, but we need to separate what the email says from what actually happened. A draft isn't proof that a transfer occurred.””
“I understand.””
“Good. Our next step is to establish the movement of money through records we can obtain lawfully.””
She explained that the bank, the lender, and the relevant financial institutions would need to review the transactions. She also wanted a forensic accountant to examine the accounts connected to the disputed loan.
For the first time since the birthday dinner, I felt as though someone was helping me understand the situation instead of demanding that I tolerate it.
But the feeling didn't last.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
Ms. Carter gestured for me to answer if I felt comfortable doing so, with the call on speaker.
“Hello?””
“Where are you?”” Daniel asked.
“Why?””
“Because I need to speak with you.””
“About what?””
“Mom told me you took the documents.””
“I have copies of documents that concern my finances.””
“Those are company records.””
“They include my name and a loan guarantee I never signed.””
He exhaled sharply.
“Sarah, you don't understand the business. You've seen a few numbers and decided I'm some kind of criminal.””
“Then help me understand. Where did the money go?””
Silence.
I continued.
“Who controls the account mentioned in your draft email?””
His breathing changed.
“What email?””
“The one about the final transfer before I discovered what you were doing.””
He didn't answer immediately.
Then his voice dropped.
“Who showed you that?””
“That's not the point.””
“Was it Vanessa?””
I looked at Ms. Carter.
Daniel had just confirmed that he understood exactly which document I meant, despite claiming moments earlier that he had no idea what I was talking about.
“Daniel,” I said, “did you transfer money into an account overseas?””
“You're making a serious mistake.””
“Did you?””
“You have no idea how complicated things are right now.””
“Then explain them.””
He suddenly raised his voice.
“Because I was trying to keep this family from falling apart!””
I sat perfectly still.
“By having an affair?””
“That has nothing to do with the business.””
“By using my credit card?””
“I was going to pay it back.””
“By putting my name on a loan?””
“I told you, I thought you understood.””
“I never signed anything.””
He went silent.
Then he said something that made my skin crawl.
“Sarah, if the company goes under, you lose everything too.””
I looked at Ms. Carter.
She wrote something on a notepad and slid it toward me.
Do not speculate. Ask for records.
I took a breath.
“Then we should have no problem letting the lawyers review the accounts.””
Daniel's voice hardened.
“You think your attorney can save you?””
“I think she can help me establish the truth.””
He laughed bitterly.
“You've always been so convinced that being smart with money makes you untouchable.””
“No. It makes me capable of reading a bank statement.””
He ended the call.
Ms. Carter immediately documented the conversation.
She advised me not to contact Daniel again about the disputed funds and said she would coordinate with appropriate professionals to determine the next steps.
By late afternoon, the forensic accountant had agreed to begin reviewing the financial records we could lawfully provide.
I left the office with a list of documents to gather and a warning not to make any financial transfers based on Daniel's instructions.
When I reached the hotel, a message from Patricia was waiting.
Daniel says you're trying to destroy his business. I need you to understand that the house is at risk.
I replied, Did you know he was planning to move money overseas?
Her answer came almost immediately.
No. But there is something I should have told you before.
I called her.
She answered on the first ring.
“Patricia, what did you know?””
Her voice was shaky.
“Daniel came to my house three months ago. He asked me to sign a document confirming that I had given him money to invest in the company.””
“Did you?””
“I lent him some money years ago. But this document listed a much larger amount.””
“How much?””
“Sixty thousand dollars.””
I sat on the edge of the hotel bed.
“Did you sign it?””
“No. I asked him why the amount was wrong, and he told me it was just a preliminary statement. I refused.””
“Where is the document?””
“He took it back.””
“Did you keep a copy?””
“I photographed it before I returned it.””
I closed my eyes.
“Please send it to my attorney.””
Patricia was quiet for a moment.
“Sarah, I know you hate me.””
“I don't have time to hate anyone right now.””
“I deserve that.””
She took a shaky breath.
“There's something else. Daniel told me that if his company failed, the lender would come after you first because you had the higher salary. He said you could pay the debt and still have enough money left to start over.””
My chest tightened.
“He planned to leave me with the debt?””
“He said you would be fine. He said you were strong.””
I looked out at the Dallas skyline.
For years, Daniel had praised my strength whenever he wanted me to endure something that should never have been mine to carry.
He called me responsible when he wanted me to pay.
He called me understanding when he wanted me to stay silent.
He called me strong when he wanted me to survive the consequences of his choices.
“Patricia,” I said, “why did you defend him at dinner?””
She began crying.
“Because he's my son.””
“And I'm your daughter-in-law.””
“I know.””
“No, you didn't. Not when you watched him sit there while you humiliated me.””
She didn't argue.
For once, she had no excuse.
I ended the call and forwarded her information to Ms. Carter.
That evening, the forensic accountant contacted the attorney's office with an initial finding from the records already available.
Several transfers appeared to have moved through a business account before being sent to a separate company. The records were incomplete, and the accountant could not yet establish the final destination of all the funds.
But one detail stood out.
A transfer of $18,500 matched the amount Patricia had shown me at the coffee shop.
The receiving company had a registered business address in Dallas.
I searched the address.
It belonged to a commercial office building.
The company was called Miller Holdings LLC.
Vanessa's surname.
I immediately sent the information to Ms. Carter.
She cautioned me that a shared surname did not establish ownership or wrongdoing. The company records would need to be checked, and the financial trail would have to be verified.
Still, I couldn't ignore the possibility that Daniel had used the company to move money while keeping both Vanessa and me in the dark about its purpose.
At 10:47 p.m., Vanessa called.
“Sarah, I need to tell you something before you hear it from Daniel.””
“What happened?””
“He just came to my apartment.””
I sat upright.
“Are you safe?””
“I'm at my sister's now. I left as soon as I saw his car.””
“Did he try to contact you?””
“He called me eleven times. Then he sent a message saying I had stolen confidential business information and that he'd report me unless I deleted everything.””
“Did you delete anything?””
“No. I saved the messages.””
“Good. Don't confront him. Send copies to your lawyer or the appropriate authorities if advised.””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Sarah, there's something about Miller Holdings that I didn't know until tonight.””
My heart began pounding.
“What is it?””
“I checked the public business records. The company was registered last year, and the filing lists two managers.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
“Daniel Thompson.””
I closed my eyes.
“And the second manager?””
Her answer came in a whisper.
“Patricia Thompson.””
I sat motionless, the phone pressed against my ear.
Daniel's mother had told me she knew nothing about the money.
Yet her name was attached to the very company that appeared in the transfer records.
Before I could respond, Vanessa sent another screenshot.
It showed a company filing dated fourteen months earlier—the same month she said her relationship with Daniel began.
Beneath the names of the two managers was a third entry.
*Authorized financial representative: Sarah Thompson.*
I stared at my own name.
I had never heard of Miller Holdings.
I had never agreed to represent it.
And according to the document, I had been involved in the company from the very beginning.
Then Vanessa sent one final message.
Sarah, the filing says your authorization was verified in person. The date is the same day you told Daniel you were working late at the office.
I looked at the date.
I remembered that evening.
I'd been in a conference room until nearly nine, preparing a financial report with three colleagues.
I had never met anyone from Miller Holdings.
May you like
So how had someone verified my authorization in person?
And why had my husband arranged for my name to appear on a company I didn't even know existed?
