Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Daniel had told me he was an only child. During our nine years of marriage, I had never met a brother, heard a story about a brother, or seen a photograph of one.

Yet Patricia had just told me that Nathan's biological father was a man Daniel claimed had died before we met.

"Patricia," I whispered, "what brother?""

She was crying so hard that I could barely understand her.

"His name was Michael. Michael Carter. He was three years older than Daniel.""

"Was?""

"He died twelve years ago.""

"Then how could he be Nathan's father?""

Patricia stopped crying.

And in that silence, I realized she had said something she hadn't meant to reveal.

"Patricia, is Michael really dead?""

"Sarah, I shouldn't have called you.""

"Is he alive?""

"I need to see you in person.""

"No. You've had years to tell the truth. You're going to tell me now.""

She lowered her voice.

"Daniel was told his brother died. That's all you need to know.""

"That's not enough.""

"It has to be.""

The call ended.

I stared at my phone, my mind racing through everything I knew about my husband. Daniel had never shown me childhood photographs. Whenever I asked about his family, he talked about his father, Richard, and how difficult it had been after his death.

When I asked about relatives, he always said the Carters were a small family.

I had assumed he meant there were no close relatives left.

Now I wondered whether the entire story had been constructed to conceal someone.

Vanessa sat beside me, pale and trembling.

"Daniel told me he had no siblings," she whispered.

"When I asked about his childhood, he said his parents had lost a baby before he was born. He never mentioned Michael.""

"Maybe his brother's death was something he couldn't discuss.""

"Then why did Patricia say Daniel was told his brother died?""

Neither of us had an answer.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Patricia appeared.

*Please don't tell Daniel what I said. If he finds out I've spoken to you, he'll destroy the only evidence I have.*

I immediately took a screenshot.

Then another message arrived.

*Meet me tomorrow at ten. Come without Vanessa. I will explain everything.*

I looked at Vanessa.

"She wants me alone.""

"Don't go," Vanessa said immediately.

"She's already lied to both of us.""

"I won't go without telling my attorney.""

I sent the messages to my lawyer and asked her to advise me on how to proceed. I wasn't going to walk into another carefully arranged trap simply because Patricia claimed she wanted to confess.

While I waited for a response, Vanessa began scrolling through her phone.

"There might be something else," she said.

"What?""

"Daniel once mentioned a family property in Savannah. He said it had belonged to his father, but nobody lived there anymore.""

"Why would that matter?""

"Because he went there last Christmas. He told me he was visiting a business associate.""

I stared at her.

"Daniel told me he spent Christmas with his mother.""

Vanessa looked sick.

"He was lying to both of us.""

She searched her photographs and found a picture taken during a weekend trip. Daniel stood in front of an old brick house with white shutters. Behind him was a wooden sign bearing the name Carter.

On the porch, barely visible in the background, stood an older man.

He had silver hair, a narrow face, and Daniel's unmistakable eyes.

Vanessa enlarged the photograph.

"Who is that?""

I couldn't answer.

The man looked older than Daniel, perhaps in his early forties when the photograph was taken. He wore a dark sweater and held a walking cane.

There was something familiar about his face, though I had never seen him before.

Then I noticed the date.

December 26, three years earlier.

If Michael had supposedly died twelve years ago, why was there a man who looked remarkably like Daniel standing outside the Carter family property just three years ago?

I sent the photograph to my attorney.

She replied a few minutes later.

*Do not approach the property or confront anyone. Preserve the original image. I am checking the appropriate legal steps.*

I put the phone down.

Vanessa was staring at the picture as if it might suddenly explain everything.

"Do you think that's Michael?""

"I don't know.""

"But Patricia said Nathan's father was Daniel's brother.""

"Yes.""

"And if that man is Michael—"

A knock interrupted her.

An officer stood at the office doorway, holding a sealed evidence bag.

"Mrs. Carter? We need to ask you about an item found in your husband's luggage.""

My stomach tightened.

"What item?""

He held up a small black notebook.

"We haven't reviewed every page, but your name appears several times. We thought you should know before we proceed.""

He opened the bag enough to show me the first page.

There were dates, names, and handwritten notes.

One entry had been underlined twice.

*Michael—contact established. Must remain confidential until London transfer is complete.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Another entry read:

*Nathan's identity cannot be disclosed to Daniel until the trust is released.*

I looked up at the officer.

"Can I ask you something?""

"Of course.""

"Does this mean my husband knew his brother might be alive?""

The officer studied the page.

"I can't draw that conclusion from a single note. Investigators will need to establish when it was written and what it means.""

He was right.

But the words were there.

Daniel had written about Michael as though he were someone who could be contacted, someone whose identity needed to remain secret.

Not someone buried twelve years ago.

I looked at Vanessa.

She had gone completely still.

Then my attorney called.

"I've reviewed the messages and the photograph," she said.

"There's one more thing you need to understand. The immediate priority remains Lily's safety and the travel and custody allegations. The questions about Nathan's paternity and the Carter trust will need separate verification.""

"I understand.""

"Good. And Sarah?""

"Yes?""

"Don't assume that because Patricia has started talking, she's telling you everything.""

I looked down at the notebook.

For the first time, I wondered whether Patricia wasn't simply hiding the truth from Daniel.

Perhaps she was protecting him from it.

Or perhaps she was protecting herself.

Then another page slipped loose from the notebook and landed on the desk.

It contained a name I had never seen before.

*Dr. Evelyn Shaw. London.*

Beside it was a handwritten appointment date.

Tomorrow.

Underneath the date, Daniel had written a sentence that made my skin crawl.

*If Michael refuses, proceed without him. Lily remains the priority.*
