Chapter 4: The House with My Money

Vanessa was still standing when she asked the question again.

“Daniel, why is my name on that account?””

My husband stared at the papers in his father's hands. His jaw worked as if he were chewing on an answer, but nothing came out.

“Sit down, Vanessa,” he finally said.

“Don't tell me to sit down!”” She pointed at the document.

“Dad just said there's a house connected to my name. What house?””

Mark pulled her chair away from the table.

“Vanessa, maybe you should—”

“No!”” She rounded on him.

“I want an answer.””

Robert removed another sheet from the envelope.

“The property is located outside Franklin, Tennessee. The purchase was completed three months ago. The initial deposit was transferred from an account funded by a loan taken out in Claire's name.””

I felt as though the room had tilted beneath me.

Three months ago, Daniel had told me his business was struggling so badly that we needed to postpone replacing our aging air conditioner.

I remembered sitting at our kitchen island, studying repair estimates while he rubbed his forehead and complained about cash flow.

“Can we wait until next summer?”” he'd asked.

“I don't want to put us under financial pressure.””

I'd agreed.

I'd spent the following week sleeping with a fan beside my bed.

And while I was trying to save a few hundred dollars, my husband had apparently purchased a second property.

“Daniel,” I said, my voice barely recognizable to me, “did you buy Vanessa a house?””

He finally looked at me.

“It's complicated.””

“Then explain it simply.””

He glanced around the table at his relatives.

“This isn't the place.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“You invited twenty-two people to a restaurant and expected me to pay for everyone. You made my income the family's entertainment. You don't get to decide that money becomes private the moment someone asks where yours went.””

A few relatives lowered their eyes.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Claire, please. We can discuss this at home.””

“Were you planning to tell me at home? Before or after the bank called?””

His expression changed.

That was enough.

Robert set the documents on the table and addressed the family.

“I didn't discover the loan through Daniel. I discovered it because I received a notice from the lender asking me to verify information connected to a financial arrangement I had guaranteed.””

“You guaranteed a loan in my name?”” I asked.

“No, Claire. I guaranteed Daniel's original business loan. That's why I received the correspondence. The $120,000 loan is a separate matter.””

He paused.

“I contacted the lender after seeing the documents. They confirmed that the application was submitted using your personal information. They would not discuss every detail with me, but the information they provided was enough to make me concerned.””

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

“I was going to explain.””

“When?”” I asked.

“When things were settled.””

“What things?””

“The business. The property. Everything.””

I stared at him.

“You borrowed $120,000 under my name, bought a house, and put Vanessa's name on the account. What exactly were you waiting to settle?””

Vanessa sank into her chair.

“I don't understand,” she whispered.

“Daniel told me the property was an investment.””

Mark turned toward her.

“You knew about the house?””

“Of course I knew about the house!”” she snapped.

“I thought Daniel was helping me invest in something. He said he had a business opportunity and needed an account for the property expenses.””

“Did you know where the money came from?”” I asked.

“No!””

Her answer was immediate.

Then she hesitated.

“He said Claire knew.””

The silence that followed was so complete that I could hear the soft hum of the restaurant's air-conditioning.

I looked at Daniel.

“You told your sister I knew?””

He swallowed.

“I thought it would be easier if she didn't worry about the details.””

“Easier for whom?””

He had no answer.

Vanessa reached across the table and grabbed the paper from Robert.

Her eyes moved rapidly over the figures.

“Wait. This says the deposit was $38,000.””

She looked up at me.

“Claire, is that the money you said you had saved for your retirement account?””

My stomach tightened.

That spring, Daniel had encouraged me to move some savings into a higher-yield account. He'd said he knew someone who could help us organize our finances.

I'd declined to transfer the money directly to him, but I'd allowed him to handle a few administrative tasks because we were married and I trusted him.

“I never authorized a $38,000 property deposit,” I said.

Vanessa slowly turned toward her brother.

“You told me that money came from your business profits.””

Daniel slammed his palm on the table.

“Enough! Everyone is acting like I'm some kind of criminal because a transaction looks strange on paper.””

Robert's face hardened.

“Then produce the authorization.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

For the first time that night, I noticed how many people were watching him with something other than admiration.

Ethan folded his arms.

“Daniel, did you forge Claire's signature?””

“Don't be ridiculous.””

“Then show us the paperwork.””

“You don't understand business.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I understand that you just asked your wife to cover a $1,100 dinner while sitting beside documents suggesting she owes $120,000.””

Daniel turned toward me.

“Claire, you know I would never deliberately hurt you.””

I looked at the man I'd married.

I remembered his hand squeezing my knee at the restaurant. His casual confidence when he pushed the bill toward me. His amusement when Vanessa called me a walking credit card.

“I know what you told me,” I replied.

“Now I'm trying to find out what you did.””

I picked up my purse.

Daniel reached for my wrist.

“Where are you going?””

“Home.””

“We're not finished.””

I gently pulled my arm away.

“You're right. We're not.””

Then Robert spoke again.

“Claire, before you leave, there's something else you should know.””

I stopped.

He looked down at the documents, then back at me.

“The property wasn't purchased for Vanessa.””

She stared at him.

“What?””

Robert slid a final page across the table.

“The county record lists a different beneficial owner. Vanessa's name appears on the account, but the property was transferred into a limited liability company two weeks after closing.””

He turned the page toward me.

The company name meant nothing to me.

The name of its registered manager did.

*Daniel Mitchell.*

And beneath it was the name of another person.

A woman I had never heard of.
