Chapter 14: The Real Thief
Desmond lunged for the folder.
Security entered before he reached it.
"Don't touch that," I said.
He stopped.
For the first time all night, Desmond looked genuinely lost.
"You used me," he said to Rachel.
She laughed.
"You used everyone.""
"Not like this.""
"No?""
Rachel stepped closer.
"You married Wren because you wanted access to Ashcombe money.""
Desmond's face tightened.
"You slept with Isolde because you wanted loyalty inside strategic partnerships.""
She looked at Voss.
"You intimidated Martin because he discovered the transfers.""
Then she looked at me.
"And tonight you struck your wife in front of two hundred people because you thought humiliating her would make her obey.""
Nobody spoke.
Rachel smiled.
"Don't suddenly ask for sympathy because someone played your game better.""
I hated her.
But she wasn't wrong.
"What did you want?"" I asked.
"Corvina.""
"Why?""
"Because I helped build it.""
Voss stared at her.
"You were an administrative contractor.""
"I was invisible.""
Rachel's voice sharpened.
"Do you know what invisible people hear?""
She pointed around the abandoned laboratory.
"Everything.""
She had learned about my father's technology.
Desmond's theft.
My mother's contingency agreement.
The Veyron accounts.
And she had spent years positioning herself between all of them.
"You sent Desmond information about my acquisition.""
"Yes.""
"You initiated the trust-access attempts?""
"Some.""
"Martin's deletion request?""
"Me.""
"Using his credentials.""
She smiled.
"You're learning.""
My mother stepped forward.
"You tried to kill me.""
Rachel's expression flattened.
"I frightened you.""
"You forced my car off the road.""
"I needed you gone.""
"Why not actually kill her?"" I asked.
Rachel looked at me.
"Because murder creates investigations.""
She said it casually.
"Fear creates silence.""
My mother had survived the crash.
Then my father died.
Terrified for me, she had accepted a plan to disappear while lawyers constructed the story of her death abroad.
It sounded impossible.
Yet every person in the room carried a piece of proof.
"You abandoned me," I whispered.
Mom flinched.
"I watched you from a distance.""
"That's supposed to make it better?""
"No.""
Tears filled her eyes.
"Nothing makes it better.""
I looked away.
That wound could wait.
Tonight was about stopping the people still creating new ones.
"Rachel, why come here?""
Her smile returned.
"Page seventeen.""
She held out her hand.
"Give me the original.""
"No.""
"Then Corvina collapses.""
Voss frowned.
"What did you do?""
Rachel pulled out her phone.
"Years ago, I created contingency instructions tied to several shell entities.""
Naomi's voice suddenly came from the doorway.
"We found them.""
Rachel spun.
Naomi stood beside two investigators.
She wasn't smiling.
"The instructions are useless.""
Rachel's face changed.
Naomi continued.
"Martin gave us access to the subsidiary records. Callum gave us the Veyron archive. Ms. Ashcombe's counsel provided the trust history.""
Callum appeared behind them.
Rachel stared at him.
"You idiot.""
He shrugged.
"I've been called worse tonight.""
Desmond laughed.
It wasn't amusement.
It was relief.
Rachel turned on him.
"You think you're safe?""
His laughter stopped.
"You're on half those records.""
"I know.""
That surprised everyone.
Desmond looked at me.
"I'm done running.""
I felt nothing.
Not forgiveness.
Not satisfaction.
Just exhaustion.
Rachel backed toward the old laboratory.
Security moved.
"Don't.""
Her confidence finally cracked.
"I have copies.""
Naomi nodded.
"So do we.""
"I have emails.""
"Excellent.""
"They implicate Desmond.""
He spoke quietly.
"I know.""
Rachel stared at him.
Then at me.
And finally, she understood.
Nobody was protecting themselves anymore.
Her power had depended on everyone's shame.
My mother's disappearance.
Voss's secrecy.
Callum's theft.
Desmond's crimes.
My ignorance.
Once the secrets were exposed, she had nothing left to trade.
Investigators escorted Rachel away.
Desmond remained.
One officer approached him.
"Mr. Ashcombe, we need you to come with us.""
He looked at me.
"Wren.""
I said nothing.
"I know I don't deserve anything from you.""
"Correct.""
His eyes lowered.
"But there is one thing Rachel lied about.""
I almost walked away.
"What?""
"Your father didn't pay me to marry you.""
My chest tightened.
"He paid me to meet you.""
"That's not better.""
"No.""
He swallowed.
"But what happened afterward was real.""
I looked at the man who had stolen from my family, cheated on me, humiliated me and tried to position himself for my wealth.
"You don't get to tell me which parts were real anymore.""
His face broke.
Good.
I removed my wedding ring.
Desmond watched as I placed it on the dusty table.
"Tomorrow morning," I said, "my attorney files for divorce.""
"Wren—"
"And tomorrow afternoon, the board removes you from Corvina.""
His eyes closed.
The officer took his arm.
As Desmond was led away, my mother came beside me.
"It's over.""
I looked at her.
"No.""
Because I still had one promise to keep.
May you like
At nine o'clock, two hundred employees would be waiting to discover what kind of owner I intended to become.
And this time, nobody else would speak for me.
