Chapter 13: The Signature
I stared at my name on page seventeen.
WREN ASHCOMBE.
The signature looked perfect.
Better than the forged authorization in Locker 317.
The backward stroke was there.
The exact curve.
The tiny break in the final line.
My signature.
Except I had never signed it.
"Where did you get that?"" I asked.
Desmond smiled.
"Ask your mother.""
I turned.
The woman beside me looked older than the mother preserved in my memories, but the way she pressed her thumb against her wedding finger was identical.
She had always done that when frightened.
"Mom?""
She closed her eyes.
"I signed your name.""
The words hurt more than I expected.
"You forged my signature?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because you were nineteen.""
I laughed once.
It sounded broken.
"So you decided that made fraud acceptable?""
"No.""
She stepped toward me.
"I decided keeping you alive mattered more.""
Voss moved closer.
"Let her explain.""
I looked at him.
"You knew she was alive.""
"Not until two years ago.""
"And you said nothing.""
"She made me promise.""
"Everyone keeps making promises about my life except me.""
Silence.
That ended it.
No more whispers.
No more protected secrets.
"No one leaves this room until I hear everything.""
Desmond leaned against the wall.
"Careful. You might not like your mother when she's finished.""
I ignored him.
"Start.""
My mother looked at me.
"Corvina wasn't originally a software company.""
Voss nodded.
"It began as a security architecture project.""
"For banks?""
"For identity systems," my mother said.
"Your father developed a method of verifying high-value authorizations without relying on a single person.""
I thought about the authentication device.
"And Desmond stole it.""
"He stole a prototype.""
Desmond interrupted.
"After your father refused to pay what he owed me.""
My mother snapped toward him.
"He paid you to test the system, not steal it.""
I stared at Desmond.
My father's recording finally made sense.
He chose you because I paid him to.
"You were working for my father.""
"Yes.""
"To attack the system.""
"To find weaknesses.""
"And when you found one?""
"I exploited it.""
"For six-point-two million dollars.""
His jaw tightened.
"I intended to return it.""
I almost laughed.
"Of course.""
My mother continued.
"Your father discovered the transfer. He also discovered Desmond had created Veyron Holdings.""
"And Callum?""
"A front.""
"Then why didn't Dad call the police?""
"Because Desmond had copied confidential technology.""
Voss spoke quietly.
"Technology that could have destroyed Corvina before it launched.""
I looked at him.
"So Dad covered it up.""
"He tried to contain it.""
"And then he died.""
My mother's face crumpled.
"The night your father died, I was there.""
The corridor seemed to disappear around me.
"You were in his study?""
She nodded.
"So was Desmond.""
Desmond straightened.
"Be careful.""
"No.""
My mother faced him.
"I've been careful for sixteen years.""
Her voice hardened.
"I'm finished.""
She turned to me.
"Your father confronted Desmond. They argued. Desmond demanded money in exchange for returning everything he'd copied.""
My fists tightened.
"Did Desmond hurt him?""
"No.""
The answer came immediately.
"Your father collapsed during the argument.""
I looked at Desmond.
He didn't deny it.
"Did you call for help?""
"I did.""
My mother whispered, "After he took the authentication device.""
Desmond's face hardened.
"Thirty seconds.""
"Thirty seconds can matter.""
"But I didn't kill him.""
"No," she said.
"You didn't.""
That truth landed strangely.
Desmond was a thief.
A manipulator.
A husband who had built our marriage on deception.
But not my father's murderer.
"Then why disappear?"" I asked my mother.
"Because after your father's death, someone tried to kill me.""
Voss looked away.
I saw it.
"Who?""
My mother didn't answer.
I turned toward Voss.
"Elias.""
He shook his head.
"It wasn't me.""
"Then who?""
A voice came from behind us.
"It was me.""
Rachel stepped from the dark laboratory doorway.
My mother's face drained of color.
Rachel wasn't crying now.
She wasn't frightened.
She was holding another folder.
"I wondered how long it would take you to remember me, Eleanor.""
My mother whispered her name.
"Rachel.""
Rachel smiled.
"You were supposed to stay dead.""
Desmond moved away from the wall.
"What the hell are you doing here?""
Rachel looked at him.
"The same thing I've been doing for fourteen years.""
She tossed the folder onto a dusty table.
"Cleaning up after all of you.""
I opened it.
Inside were records.
Veyron transfers.
Corvina accounts.
Shell companies.
Payments spanning more than a decade.
At the bottom of each chain was the same beneficiary.
Not Desmond.
Not Callum.
Rachel Moore.
I looked up.
"You?""
She smiled.
"Desmond was never the mastermind, Wren.""
Desmond's face went white.
May you like
Rachel looked directly at him.
"He was just the easiest man in the room to manipulate.""
