Chapter 8: The Plan Behind The Divorce

I drove to Ethan’s apartment before sunrise.

The streets were empty.

The city was quiet.

But my mind was louder than ever.

Richard had been planning.

Not months.

Years.

When I arrived, Ethan was standing outside waiting.

He looked exhausted.

He handed me the file immediately.

“I didn’t know if I should open it.””

“You did the right thing.””

He nodded.

“But I feel like I betrayed Dad.””

I looked at him.

“Ethan, finding the truth is not betrayal.””

He looked away.

“I spent months believing you were the problem.””

I softened my voice.

“You were scared.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I was proud.””

That honesty hurt.

But it was also the first real step forward.

We went inside.

The file was sitting on the table.

A thick folder.

Organized.

Labelled.

Prepared.

Just like everything Richard did.

I opened it.

The first section was about finances.

The second was about the divorce.

The third was about us.

Our children.

My hands tightened.

“He categorized us.””

Ethan looked over.

“What?””

I showed him.

Richard had written notes.

Not loving memories.

Not family thoughts.

Descriptions.

Weaknesses.

Strengths.

Ways to influence each person.

I couldn’t continue reading.

Ethan took the page.

His face changed.

“He wrote that I respond to praise.””

I said nothing.

“He knew exactly what to say.””

That was the hardest truth.

Richard knew his children.

He knew their dreams.

Their fears.

Their insecurities.

And instead of protecting them, he used that knowledge.

Caleb arrived thirty minutes later.

Then Noah.

When they saw the folder, they understood.

Nobody wanted to open it.

But everyone knew they needed to.

Caleb read quietly.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He handed me the paper.

My eyes moved across the page.

Richard had written:

“Caleb will avoid conflict if pressured emotionally.””

Noah looked sick.

“What did he write about me?””

Nobody wanted to answer.

But Noah grabbed the page.

He read it himself.

His face fell.

“He said I’m desperate for approval.””

The room became silent.

Because it was true.

And that made it worse.

Richard hadn’t invented their weaknesses.

He had studied them.

Then used them.

That afternoon, we brought the file to Vanessa.

She read through it carefully.

“This changes everything.””

“How?””

She looked at me.

“Because now we can show intent.””

“Intent for what?””

“To manipulate custody.””

The word felt heavy.

Custody.

Not because Richard wanted the children.

Because he wanted to win.

The next hearing was scheduled for the following week.

This time, Richard arrived angry.

Not confident.

Angry.

He walked toward me before entering the courtroom.

“You went through my private files?””

I looked at him.

“Your son found them.””

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

Then he looked at Ethan.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not disappointment.

Fear.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Ethan stared at him.

“No, Dad.””

His voice was quiet.

“We finally do.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You’re choosing her?””

Ethan shook his head.

“No.””

A pause.

“We’re choosing the truth.””

For a moment, Richard had nothing to say.

Then his attorney called him inside.

The hearing began.

Judge Morrison reviewed the new evidence.

“Mr. Hale, these documents suggest a deliberate attempt to influence your children’s relationship with their mother.””

Richard leaned forward.

“That is not what happened.””

The judge looked at him.

“Then explain what happened.””

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because for months, he had prepared answers for accusations.

But he had never prepared for the truth.

Then Richard did something unexpected.

He looked directly at me.

And smiled.

Not the courtroom smile.

Not the confident smile.

A colder one.

“You still don’t know everything.””

I felt a chill.

Judge Morrison noticed.

“Mr. Hale, what does that mean?””

Richard leaned back.

“It means Claire has secrets too.””

The courtroom became silent.

I looked at him.

Because I knew exactly what he was trying to do.

Create doubt.

Create another story.

But what I didn’t know was what secret he thought he had found.

And when his attorney placed the next document on the table, I recognized the signature immediately.

Mine.
