Chapter 5: The Children He Turned Against Me

The hardest part of divorce was never losing Richard.

It was watching my children lose the version of their father they believed in.

After the hearing, I sat in my car outside the courthouse for nearly twenty minutes.

I didn’t turn on the engine.

I just sat there.

The rain tapped softly against the windshield.

Then my phone rang.

It was Lily.

“Mom?””

Her voice was quiet.

“I’m outside.””

I looked through the window.

She was standing near the courthouse steps.

I immediately got out.

“Lily, what are you doing?””

She shrugged.

“I didn’t want to leave with Dad.””

Those words hurt.

Not because she chose me.

Because she had already learned she needed to choose at all.

I hugged her.

“You should never have to pick sides.””

She held onto me.

“But Dad made everyone pick.””

I closed my eyes.

Because she was right.

That had always been Richard’s gift.

Making people feel like they had only two options.

Love him.

Or betray him.

That evening, Lily and I went home together.

The house felt different.

Not because anything had changed physically.

The same pictures hung on the walls.

The same couch sat in the living room.

But it felt like a place where someone had been pretending.

Lily sat at the kitchen table.

“Mom?””

“Yes?””

“Did Dad really say those things about me?””

I stopped.

“What things?””

She looked down.

“He told Grandma that you were choosing me because I was easier.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“He said the boys were old enough to understand reality.””

I sat across from her.

“Lily, listen to me.””

She looked up.

“You are not a replacement for anyone.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

She whispered.

“I just don’t understand why he wanted everyone to hate you.””

I didn’t have an answer.

Not one she deserved to hear.

But I knew.

Richard didn’t just want the divorce.

He wanted control over the story.

The next morning, I met Vanessa Brooks again.

She placed another folder on the table.

“I found something.””

I opened it.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Emails.””

My stomach tightened.

“From Richard?””

“Yes.””

I looked through the pages.

They weren’t romantic.

They weren’t about another relationship.

They were worse.

They were conversations about strategy.

About timing.

About making sure he appeared like the victim.

One sentence made my hands shake.

“He wrote that the children would naturally choose the financially stronger parent.””

I looked up.

“He said that?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He underestimated them.””

I looked back at the page.

“No.””

I whispered.

“He underestimated me.””

That afternoon, Ethan came to the house.

I almost didn’t recognize him.

Not because he looked different.

Because he looked defeated.

He stood at the door.

“Can I come in?””

I stepped aside.

“Of course.””

He entered slowly.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“Dad said you were going to destroy him.””

I stayed quiet.

“And I believed him.””

That sentence hurt.

But I let him finish.

“I thought you were angry because you couldn’t accept that he wanted to leave.””

I sat down.

“Ethan.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

“Because I laughed in court.””

His eyes turned red.

“I laughed when you said none.””

I looked away for a moment.

Because that was the wound I had tried hardest not to touch.

“You were hurt.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I was wrong.””

The room was silent.

Then Ethan pulled something from his pocket.

A small envelope.

“What is that?””

He placed it on the table.

“Dad gave this to me.””

I stared at it.

“What is inside?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know.””

“Then why bring it to me?””

His voice dropped.

“Because he told me never to let you see it.””

My heart stopped.

I slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was one page.

One message.

And after reading the first line, I understood why Richard was afraid.

Because it wasn’t about money.

May you like

It wasn’t about divorce.

It was about the reason he wanted my sons on his side.
