Chapter 4: The $186,000 Betrayal

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the pounding of my own heart.

“I used it to buy something for Vanessa.””

Ethan's words hung in the luxurious hotel suite like a confession nobody could take back.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“Ethan,” she whispered, “you said the money came from your investment account.””

He turned toward her.

“Not now.””

“No.”” I stepped forward.

“Now is exactly the time.””

Richard stood beside the conference table, his expression so cold that even Patricia had stopped moving.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said, “explain precisely what you purchased with my granddaughter's money.””

Ethan loosened his tie.

“It was a property investment. The plan was to renovate the house and sell it at a profit.””

“What house?”” I asked.

Vanessa stared at the floor.

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“A house in Buckhead.””

I knew the neighborhood. Beautiful homes, gated driveways, manicured lawns, and property prices that made ordinary people feel poor just by looking at them.

“You bought a house for your mistress with my inheritance?””

“It wasn't like that, Sarah.””

“Then tell me what it was like.””

Ethan glanced at Richard, clearly hoping the billionaire might offer him a way out.

He didn't.

“The house was supposed to be a business investment,” Ethan explained.

“Vanessa needed somewhere to stay while I worked through the acquisition. I thought I could eventually sell it and return your money.””

“When?””

“When the company became profitable.””

“You told me you couldn't afford to replace my car tires last winter.””

He flinched.

“You told me we had to cancel our anniversary dinner because payroll was late.””

“Sarah, I was under pressure.””

“You bought her a house.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“I didn't know it was your money!””

Her voice cracked, but I noticed she never once looked at me.

“I thought Ethan had purchased it with company profits. He told me the house was a gift because we were having a baby.””

I looked at her swollen eyes and expensive handbag.

“Did you know he was married when you started seeing him?””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Then you knew exactly what kind of man was making promises to you.””

Ethan slammed his palm against the table.

“Enough! Both of you are acting like I'm some criminal. I was trying to build a future for my family.””

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

“Your family?””

“My wife—” Ethan stopped himself.

“My former wife and I were struggling. I made decisions I regret.””

“Struggling?”” I repeated.

“I sold my mother's jewelry to keep your employees paid. I wore the same shoes for three years because you said the business needed every dollar. I never asked you for expensive gifts.

I never demanded vacations. I only asked you to be honest.””

My voice shook.

“And you used the money I inherited from my dead mother to buy a house for another woman.””

Ethan's face reddened.

“I was going to pay you back!””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

William placed a printed document on the table.

“According to the original loan agreement, Mr. Whitmore received $186,000 from Sarah's personal account seven years ago. The funds were transferred to an account controlled by Whitmore Construction and then distributed to a real estate company registered under Vanessa Reed's name.””

Vanessa stared at the document.

“You told me the house was yours.””

“It is mine,” Ethan snapped.

“Then why is my name on the property records?””

Everyone turned toward her.

William looked down at his tablet.

“Because the property is legally registered to Ms. Reed.””

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

Patricia grabbed the back of a chair.

“What?””

Ethan stared at William with open hostility.

“Those records are private.””

“Not when they form part of a financial investigation,” William replied.

Richard turned to his granddaughter.

“Sarah, do you want to pursue repayment of the loan?””

I looked at the document.

For seven years, I had believed that the money was gone forever. I had blamed myself for trusting Ethan. Sometimes, when bills piled up, I had wondered whether I had been foolish to help him.

Now I understood something worse.

He hadn't merely betrayed my trust.

He had built a second life with the money I sacrificed to save our first one.

“Yes,” I said.

“I want every dollar returned.””

Richard nodded.

“Then we'll proceed through the proper legal channels.””

Ethan stepped toward me.

“Sarah, please. Think about what you're doing. If you force repayment immediately, the company could collapse. My employees could lose their jobs.””

I stared at him.

“You had seven years to think about what you were doing.””

“I have a baby coming.””

“And I had a husband.””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Patricia moved closer, her voice suddenly soft.

“Sarah, sweetheart, I know we've had our disagreements, but surely you don't want innocent people to suffer because of a personal dispute.””

I looked at the woman who had thrown my suitcase onto the staircase and demanded my wedding ring.

“Where was your concern for innocent people when your son used my money to buy his mistress a house?””

She looked away.

Richard addressed William.

“Contact our legal counsel. Preserve the loan agreement, the property records, and every transaction connected to the transfer. Nothing should be altered or destroyed.””

William nodded and stepped aside to make the call.

Ethan looked as if the room had begun shrinking around him.

Then Patricia did something I never expected.

She dropped into the chair beside the table and covered her face.

“Oh, Sarah,” she sobbed.

“If I had known who you really were, none of this would have happened.””

I watched her carefully.

There it was.

Not an apology for what she'd done.

An admission that she would have treated me differently if she'd known I was rich.

I picked up my purse.

“You knew exactly who I was, Patricia. You just thought I was someone you could hurt without consequences.””

Her tears stopped.

For the first time in seven years, I didn't wait for her approval.

I turned toward Richard.

“Can we leave?””

“Of course.””

He offered me his arm, but before I could take it, Ethan called my name.

“Sarah!””

I stopped at the doorway.

His voice had lost its arrogance.

“There's something else you need to know about that money.””

I turned slowly.

“What?””

Ethan glanced at Vanessa, then at his mother.

“The house wasn't the only thing I bought.””

He swallowed hard.

“Some of the money went toward a payment to someone who promised to keep a secret about your mother.””

My blood turned cold.

“What secret?””

May you like

Ethan's eyes met mine.

“Your mother didn't die in the accident you were told about.””
