Chapter 2

“Stop fighting her.”

My blood went cold.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at birthdays.

Christmas dinners.

Backyard cookouts.

I had heard it joking with my children and asking me for favors.

It belonged to my younger brother.

Caleb.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Ethan stared at me.

“That’s Uncle Caleb,” he whispered.

I looked at my wife.

She immediately shook her head.

“That proves nothing.”

I pressed play again.

The video was shaky because Ethan had apparently hidden the tablet behind boxes near the kitchen doorway.

Vanessa dragged Lily across the floor.

My daughter was crying.

Caleb stood near the basement door.

He wasn’t trying to help her.

He was watching.

“Please,” Lily cried in the recording. “I’m hungry.”

Vanessa yanked the basement door open.

“You should have thought about that before touching my things.”

Caleb stepped forward.

“She’s four, Vanessa.”

“And she needs discipline.”

“You’re going too far.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You said you wanted Mark to suffer too.”

My hand tightened around the tablet.

There it was.

My own name.

Caleb went silent in the recording.

Vanessa pushed Lily into the basement.

The door slammed.

The lock clicked.

Ethan’s small voice came from behind the camera.

“Lily?”

Vanessa spun around.

The video ended.

For several seconds, nobody in my dining room spoke.

Then Vanessa lunged for the tablet.

I pulled it away.

“Give me that!”

“Back up.”

“You hit me, Mark! Do you understand what you did?”

“I understand exactly what I did.”

My voice sounded strange even to me.

Too calm.

That scared Vanessa more than shouting would have.

“You’re going to jail,” she said.

“Maybe.”

Her eyes widened.

I hated admitting it, but I knew hitting her had been wrong.

Whatever she had done, I had crossed a line too.

And I had done it in front of my children.

That mattered.

But nothing could make me ignore the video.

Nothing could make me leave Lily and Ethan alone with her.

I turned to Ethan.

“How many videos?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Seven.”

Vanessa made a sharp sound.

“You little spy.”

Ethan flinched.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t speak to him.”

“He’s my son.”

“Then start acting like his mother.”

Her face twisted.

“You think you’re some hero now?”

“No.”

I looked at Lily’s red cheek.

“I think I failed to see what was happening in my own house.”

That hurt more than anything Vanessa could say.

I had been working long hours for almost a year.

My construction company had landed two large commercial contracts.

I left before sunrise some mornings.

I came home after bedtime several nights a week.

Vanessa always told me the kids were fine.

She sent smiling pictures.

Clean clothes.

Packed lunches.

Birthday cupcakes.

Everything looked normal.

That was the terrifying part.

Abuse had been happening inside a house full of family photographs.

Ethan tugged my sleeve.

“Dad?”

I crouched beside him.

“What?”

“There’s another video.”

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the front door.

I blocked her.

“Where are you going?”

“Anywhere away from you.”

“You can leave.”

She stopped.

“But your phone stays.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“You can’t take my property.”

“Then wait for the police.”

That changed everything.

Vanessa stared at me.

“You called them?”

“Not yet.”

I pulled my phone from my pocket.

She slapped it from my hand.

The phone hit the floor.

Lily screamed.

Ethan backed against the wall.

Vanessa froze.

So did I.

Then the doorbell rang.

Three hard knocks followed.

“Dallas Police!”

I looked at Vanessa.

She smiled.

A slow, ugly smile.

“I already called them.”

My stomach dropped.

Of course she had.

When she reached into her purse after I hit her, she hadn’t been reaching for anything random.

She had called 911.

Two officers entered after Vanessa opened the door.

She immediately began crying.

Not the angry crying I had seen seconds earlier.

Soft crying.

Controlled crying.

She held her cheek.

“My husband attacked me.”

One officer looked at me.

“Sir, step away.”

I raised my hands.

“I will. But there are videos involving the children.”

Vanessa pointed at me.

“He’s trying to distract you because he assaulted me.”

The officer approached.

“Sir, turn around.”

Ethan suddenly shouted.

“Mom hurts Lily!”

Everyone stopped.

Vanessa glared at him.

Ethan lifted the tablet.

“I have proof.”

The second officer looked at the first.

“Let me see it.”

Vanessa rushed toward Ethan.

I moved instinctively, then stopped myself.

I couldn’t touch her again.

The officer stepped between them.

“Ma’am, stay back.”

“But that tablet is mine.”

“No,” Ethan said. “It’s Dad’s.”

The officer watched the first video.

His expression changed.

Then the second.

Then the third.

In one clip, Vanessa screamed at Lily for spilling milk and made her stand facing a wall while Ethan ate dinner alone.

In another, she locked Lily in the basement.

In another, Caleb stood in the kitchen arguing with Vanessa.

“You said scare them,” he told her. “Not starve them.”

My stomach twisted.

Vanessa’s crying stopped.

The officer looked up.

“Who’s the male?”

“My brother,” I said.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“They’re edited.”

“They’re not,” Ethan said.

She snapped toward him.

“Shut up!”

The officer raised his voice.

“Ma’am.”

Silence.

The first officer stepped toward me.

“You still assaulted your wife.”

“I know.”

“You’re admitting that?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

I continued.

“I hit her once after seeing my daughter on the floor. It was wrong. I’m not denying it.”

The officer studied me.

I pointed at Lily.

“But please make sure my children don’t stay with her tonight.”

Vanessa exploded.

“You don’t get to decide that!”

The officers separated us.

One called a supervisor.

Another requested someone from child protective services.

Then Ethan quietly came beside me.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“The worst video isn’t the basement one.”

My heart sank.

Vanessa heard him.

Her face changed.

For the first time, she looked truly terrified.

“Ethan,” she said softly.

My son recoiled.

“Don’t.”

Vanessa took a step toward him.

The officer stopped her.

“What video?” I asked.

Ethan swallowed.

“The one from your office.”

“My office?”

He nodded.

“Mom and Uncle Caleb went in there after you left for work.”

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!”

Ethan opened the gallery.

Vanessa fought past the officer.

“Give me that!”

Two officers grabbed her.

She screamed.

“DELETE IT!”

Ethan pressed play.

The recording showed Vanessa sitting at my desk.

Caleb stood beside her.

Documents covered the surface.

My company documents.

Insurance papers.

Bank statements.

And something else.

A folder I recognized immediately.

The trust my late father had created for Ethan and Lily.

Caleb pointed at it.

“When Mark signs the refinancing papers, he won’t notice the extra pages.”

Vanessa laughed.

“He signs whatever I put in front of him.”

Caleb looked uncomfortable.

“And after that?”

Vanessa leaned back in my chair.

“After that, half the company is exposed.”

“That doesn’t give us custody.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“But if Mark gets arrested for violence, it does.”

Every person in the room went silent.

Vanessa stopped struggling.

The video continued.

Caleb stared at her.

“You’re planning to provoke him?”

“I know exactly which buttons to push.”

“And the kids?”

Vanessa shrugged.

“They’re useful.”

I felt sick.

Caleb lowered his voice.

“You promised nobody would actually get hurt.”

Vanessa smiled again.

“Caleb, somebody always gets hurt.”

The recording ended.

The officer slowly turned toward Vanessa.

Her face had lost all color.

I looked at the woman I had slept beside for eleven years.

The mother of my children.

The person I had trusted with everything.

And suddenly I understood.

The slap had not started this nightmare.

It had exposed it.

The officer took the tablet.

“Ma’am, I need you to turn around.”

Vanessa’s eyes snapped toward me.

“You think this saves you?”

I said nothing.

She smiled.

“You still don’t know what your brother did.”

Caleb.

My stomach tightened.

“What did he do?”

The officers pulled Vanessa’s arms behind her.

She leaned toward me as the handcuffs closed.

May you like

Then she whispered six words that shattered what was left of my family.

“Ask him who Lily’s father is.”
