Chapter 1

My four-year-old daughter reached for one slice of pizza—and my wife slapped her so hard she fell beside the table. I walked in before the crying stopped.
I had come home early from work in Dallas.
The front door was unlocked, but the house felt strangely quiet.
Then I heard my daughter Lily sobbing in the dining room.
“Why can’t I eat, Vanessa?”
“You were told to wait,” my wife snapped.
I stepped through the doorway and froze.
Lily was sitting on the floor with one hand pressed against her red cheek.
A slice of pizza lay beside her.
Vanessa stood over her, still raising her voice.
“You don’t touch food in my house without permission.”
“She said she was hungry,” my eight-year-old son Ethan whispered.
Vanessa spun toward him.
“Go upstairs before you get the same lesson.”
Lily saw me and reached out both arms.
“Daddy!”
I rushed across the room and lifted her against my chest.
Her whole body was trembling.
“What happened to her face?” I demanded.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She threw herself down because I corrected her.”
“No,” Ethan said from the stairs. “She slapped Lily.”
Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.
“He’s lying because he hates me.”
Then Lily whispered something that made my stomach turn.
“She doesn’t let me eat when you work late.”
I looked at the untouched pizza, then at how tightly Lily clung to me.
Vanessa grabbed my arm and ordered me to put her down.
When she reached toward Lily again, I pulled my daughter behind me.
“Don’t touch her.”
Vanessa laughed and shoved me in the chest.
I lost control and punched her once, sending her stumbling against a chair.
Ethan screamed, and Lily buried her face against my shoulder.
Vanessa stared at me in shock before reaching inside her purse.
“You just made the biggest mistake of your life.”
But Ethan suddenly ran to the kitchen cabinet and pulled out my old tablet.
“I recorded what she does when you’re gone.”
The screen lit up, and the first video showed Vanessa dragging Lily toward a locked basement door.
