Chapter 14: The Last Secret Inside the Lakehouse
Martin immediately called the police.
Daniel pulled me behind the desk while my mother grabbed Vanessa's arm.
"Who is downstairs?"" I whispered.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"Ethan.""
My stomach tightened.
"He's supposed to be with the police.""
"Then someone let him go.""
We heard footsteps moving across the living room.
A drawer slammed.
Then Ethan shouted again.
"MICHAEL! I KNOW YOU'RE HERE!""
Vanessa began crying.
"Please make him stop.""
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
She looked at me.
"Because Ethan knows the truth. He knows Michael is Noah's father.""
"Then why did he pretend Noah was his son?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because Michael disappeared before Noah was born. Ethan offered to help me. He said he'd raise the child as his own.""
I stared.
"Why?""
"Because Patricia promised him access to the lakehouse.""
My blood ran cold.
Vanessa continued.
"Ethan wanted the property. Patricia wanted control over the trust. And I wanted my son to have a stable life.""
"By helping them destroy my mother's hair?""
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"I didn't think Ethan would actually do it.""
"You stood there and watched.""
She began crying.
"I know.""
For the first time, she looked less like the confident salon owner who had humiliated my mother and more like someone who had finally realized the consequences of her choices.
But I wasn't ready to feel sorry for her.
Daniel moved toward the door.
"Stay here.""
I grabbed his arm.
"You're not going anywhere alone.""
He looked at me.
"I've waited thirty-four years to meet you. I'm not going to let anything happen to you.""
Before I could answer, another voice came from downstairs.
"Daniel?""
Everyone froze.
An older man's voice.
"Daniel, it's Michael.""
My mother began sobbing.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then he walked into the hallway.
I followed.
At the bottom of the stairs stood a man with gray hair and a walking cane.
He looked exhausted.
But his eyes were familiar.
I had seen them in my father's photographs.
Michael Miller.
My biological father.
He looked at me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he whispered:
"Sarah?""
I nodded.
His cane slipped from his hand.
He took one unsteady step forward.
"I've imagined this moment for thirty-four years.""
I didn't know what to say.
He looked at my face.
"You have Robert's smile.""
I swallowed.
"He raised me.""
Michael nodded.
"And he did a better job than I ever could have.""
Ethan suddenly appeared behind him.
"Enough with the family reunion.""
Michael turned.
"Get away from her.""
Ethan laughed.
"You don't get to give orders.""
Martin stepped into the hallway.
"Mr. Miller, the police are on their way.""
Ethan ignored him.
He looked at Michael.
"You owe me.""
Michael shook his head.
"I owe you nothing.""
"You promised me the lakehouse.""
"No. Patricia promised you something that never belonged to her.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Then explain the money.""
Michael looked toward Vanessa.
"Did you tell him?""
Vanessa shook her head.
Michael sighed.
"Years ago, I discovered that Patricia had been using the lakehouse to hide money from the Collins family estate. She told Ethan that if he married Sarah, he could gain control of the property.""
I looked at Ethan.
"How much money?""
"Almost $900,000," Michael answered.
My stomach dropped.
"Where did it go?""
Michael pointed toward the briefcase Ethan was carrying.
"Ask him.""
Ethan tightened his grip.
Martin immediately stepped forward.
"Put that down.""
Ethan backed away.
"Nobody is taking anything.""
Then Michael revealed something I hadn't expected.
"That money was never Patricia's. It belonged to Noah.""
Vanessa began crying.
Michael continued.
"Rebecca inherited money from Daniel's family. Patricia transferred part of it into a trust for her children. When Rebecca died, Noah became the rightful beneficiary.""
I stared.
"Rebecca died?""
Daniel nodded sadly.
"Four years ago. Shortly after Noah was born.""
Vanessa looked down.
"She was my older sister.""
I finally understood.
Rebecca had been the woman my father once tried to protect.
The woman Patricia had raised as her younger sister.
The woman whose identity had been used to manipulate the inheritance.
And Noah was her son.
Michael looked at Ethan.
"You were supposed to help Vanessa protect Noah's inheritance. Instead, you stole it.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"She agreed to it.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I agreed because you told me the money was for Noah.""
"I was going to put it back.""
"When?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Martin moved closer.
"Mr. Miller, put the briefcase on the floor.""
Ethan suddenly threw it toward the staircase.
The briefcase hit the railing.
Documents scattered everywhere.
Among them was a small black folder.
Michael picked it up.
Inside was a bank statement and a handwritten note.
He looked at Patricia.
"You told him about the account?""
Patricia stood frozen.
Michael opened the note.
It was signed by my father.
If Michael returns, give him the final letter. He deserves to know what happened to his children.
I stared.
"His children?""
Michael looked at me.
Then at Vanessa.
"Sarah, Noah isn't the only child I fathered.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
He handed me another document.
It was a DNA report.
The names at the top were Michael Miller and Vanessa Collins.
The result confirmed a biological relationship.
But beneath it was another test.
Michael Miller and Sarah Miller.
The result showed a direct parent-child relationship.
I looked up.
"Why did Dad keep this?""
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Robert wanted me to meet you. But Patricia threatened to expose something that would have destroyed the entire family.""
"What?""
He looked at Linda.
My mother slowly shook her head.
Then Michael spoke.
"Patricia didn't just switch the babies at the hospital.""
He pointed toward the final page.
"She also arranged for the real birth records to disappear because one of the babies had been born with a different name.""
I stared at the page.
The original hospital record listed three children.
Sarah Collins.
Rebecca Miller.
And a third child.
A boy.
His name was Ethan Miller.
My mouth went dry.
Ethan looked at the document.
Then he lunged toward Michael.
But before he could reach him, police officers rushed through the front door.
"EVERYBODY STEP AWAY!""
Two officers restrained Ethan.
Another approached Patricia.
Martin handed them the documents.
I looked at the birth record one final time.
Ethan wasn't just my unfaithful fiancé.
He was connected to the same hospital switch that had destroyed my family's history.
And according to the document, he had been born under a different identity.
The officer holding Ethan turned toward Martin.
"Sir, we need to know something.""
He pointed at the record.
"Who is this child's biological father?""
Martin examined the original entry.
Then he looked at Ethan.
His expression changed.
"Robert Miller.""
My father's name.
I couldn't breathe.
Ethan was my father's biological son.
My half-brother.
May you like
The man I had almost married.
And the reason my father had spent his final years trying to protect me was suddenly painfully clear.
