Chapter 12: The Birth Certificate That Exposed Everyone
"Daniel is Noah's father?""
I stared at the birth certificate.
Martin nodded slowly.
"According to this original document, yes.""
My mother shook her head.
"That can't be right. Daniel was missing for years.""
I looked at the date.
Noah had been born four years earlier.
The same month Ethan had proposed to me.
I remembered the photograph of Ethan holding the boy.
I remembered his confession.
He had admitted Noah was his son.
But now there were two different names on the birth certificate.
One original.
One altered.
I looked at Martin.
"Could someone have changed the father's name?""
"Certainly. But we need to establish when and why.""
My mother suddenly stood.
"Patricia.""
We both turned.
"She did this," Mom continued.
"She has been changing identities for years.""
Martin placed the documents into his briefcase.
"We need to preserve these records and have them examined.""
I looked at the photograph of Noah.
"Why would Daniel allow another man to be listed as the father?""
Before Martin could answer, a noise came from downstairs.
A car door slammed.
Then footsteps approached the front entrance.
My mother grabbed my arm.
"Someone's here.""
Martin moved toward the hallway.
"Stay in this room.""
But I heard a familiar voice.
"Linda?""
Patricia.
My aunt.
The woman who had introduced me to Ethan.
The woman who had supposedly helped with my father's estate.
The woman whose signature appeared on the fraudulent documents.
She climbed the stairs without waiting for an invitation.
When she reached the bedroom, she stopped.
Her eyes moved from the open filing cabinet to the documents in Martin's hands.
Then she smiled.
"Well, I suppose the family reunion has started.""
My mother stepped forward.
"How could you?""
Patricia sighed.
"Linda, please don't turn this into another emotional performance.""
"You switched our babies!""
Patricia's expression changed.
For the first time, her carefully maintained composure cracked.
"Lower your voice.""
"You gave away my daughter!""
Patricia looked at me.
"Actually, I gave you the daughter you wanted.""
I felt my blood boil.
"You don't get to decide that.""
She folded her arms.
"Your mother couldn't have children. She was desperate. Robert knew how much she wanted a baby.""
My mother shook her head.
"I wanted a child. I never wanted someone else's child stolen.""
Patricia rolled her eyes.
"Nobody was stolen. You raised Sarah. You loved her. What difference does biology make?""
I stepped closer.
"Then why did you spend twenty-eight years hiding the truth?""
She looked at me coldly.
"Because you were safer not knowing.""
"Safer from whom?""
"From Daniel.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
Patricia laughed without humor.
"Because Daniel was a dangerous man. He wanted money, property, and control. He would have destroyed everything.""
Martin interrupted.
"That's a serious accusation. Do you have evidence?""
Patricia looked at him.
"Of course I do.""
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folder.
"Your father kept secrets from everyone. He knew Daniel was involved in criminal activity.""
I shook my head.
"You're changing the subject.""
"No, Sarah. I'm telling you why I made the decisions I made.""
She opened the folder.
Inside were several bank statements.
Large transfers.
Some from my father's estate.
Others from accounts belonging to Ethan.
I looked at the dates.
"What's this?""
Patricia pointed to one transaction.
"Your fiancé wasn't stealing your inheritance. He was recovering money your father had taken from our family.""
Martin took the statement.
"These transactions don't establish that.""
Patricia smiled.
"Look at the account holder.""
I leaned forward.
The account belonged to Rebecca Collins.
My mother's biological daughter.
The woman who had been raised as Patricia's younger sister.
I looked at my mother.
"Did you know Rebecca had this account?""
"No.""
Patricia nodded.
"Of course she didn't. I managed it for her.""
I stared.
"Why?""
"Because Rebecca was never supposed to inherit anything directly. Your father created the trust to keep control over the property.""
Martin shook his head.
"That's false. The trust was created to protect the beneficiaries.""
Patricia laughed.
"That's what Robert told you.""
Then she turned toward me.
"Sarah, there is something else your father never told you.""
I felt exhausted.
"What now?""
"Rebecca knew about the baby switch.""
My mother gasped.
"You're lying.""
"She knew from the beginning.""
I stared at Patricia.
"Why would she agree to it?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"Because she wanted your life.""
The words made my skin crawl.
"She wanted to be raised by Robert and Linda. She wanted the lakehouse. She wanted your father's name.""
My mother shook her head.
"Rebecca was a child.""
"Exactly. And children do what their parents tell them.""
Martin stepped between us.
"Enough. Patricia, you're going to need to explain the forged authorization and the attempted property transfer to the authorities.""
Patricia's smile disappeared.
"You're forgetting something, Martin.""
She pulled out another document.
It was a notarized declaration.
The heading read:
*VOLUNTARY BENEFICIARY RENUNCIATION.*
My name appeared at the bottom.
I stared.
"I never signed that.""
Patricia nodded.
"I know.""
Then she placed a second page beside it.
This one contained my father's signature.
And beneath it was a statement declaring that I had been informed of my biological parentage and voluntarily surrendered all claims to the family estate.
Martin's face hardened.
"This is a forgery.""
Patricia smiled.
"Prove it.""
I looked at the date.
It was dated two days before my father's death.
My father had been unconscious.
Again.
I looked at Patricia.
"Why are you doing this?""
Her expression became almost gentle.
"Because your father made a promise to me.""
"What promise?""
"That Rebecca would inherit the lakehouse.""
My mother shook her head.
"Robert would never have promised that.""
Patricia leaned closer.
"He did. And he left me something to prove it.""
She reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small silver USB drive.
"Everything is on here. The original trust instructions, the DNA records, and the video your father made before he died.""
My heart began pounding.
Martin reached for the drive.
Patricia pulled it away.
"Not so fast.""
She looked directly at me.
"There's one condition.""
"What?""
"You must agree to withdraw the police complaint against Ethan and Vanessa.""
I stared at her.
"Why would I do that?""
"Because the video explains why Ethan was protecting Vanessa.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Just tell me.""
Patricia's smile vanished.
"Because Ethan isn't Noah's biological father.""
The room went silent.
She looked at my mother.
"And he never was.""
Then she placed the USB drive on the desk.
"Your father knew who Noah's real father was. And if you watch that video, you'll understand why he spent the final months of his life trying to keep that man away from you.""
Martin reached for the drive.
But Patricia suddenly pulled out her phone.
She pressed a button.
A video began playing.
My father's face appeared on the screen.
He looked pale and exhausted, sitting in his hospital bed.
Then he spoke my name.
"Sarah, if you've reached this point, it means Patricia has finally told you about the children.""
He paused.
His eyes filled with tears.
"But there is one person you must never trust.""
He leaned closer to the camera.
"Your biological father isn't Daniel Collins.""
I stopped breathing.
My father looked directly into the lens.
"Sarah, the man who fathered you is someone you've known your entire life.""
The video froze.
May you like
And behind me, my mother whispered a name.
"Robert's brother...""
