Chapter 11: The Detective Who Remembered

Detective Robert Hale arrived at the hospital the following afternoon.

He was in his late fifties, with silver hair, a lined face, and a dark suit that looked as though it had been worn through too many difficult days.

He introduced himself, confirmed that I was comfortable speaking with him, and asked Samantha to remain in the room.

Then he placed a folder on the table.

“Mrs. Bennett, I understand you've received documents relating to your mother's death and that you have concerns about your husband's accident.””

“I have more than concerns,” I replied.

“I have evidence that my mother asked for protection from a vehicle following her, and the official account of her death doesn't match the medical records.””

Hale nodded.

“I've reviewed the preliminary documents. There are significant discrepancies.””

“Why wasn't I told about them?””

He looked down at the folder.

“Because the original investigation was handled by a different department, and the full records were not included in the file I received when I investigated your husband's accident.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

“No,” he admitted.

“It doesn't.””

He opened the folder and removed a copy of the old accident report.

“The original file was incomplete. Several witness statements were missing, and the medical documentation had not been attached. I discovered that during my initial review of Lucas's case.””

I stared at him.

“You knew something was wrong?””

“I knew there were gaps. I did not know whether they were deliberate.””

“Did you investigate them?””

“Yes. But the records had been archived, and several of the people involved were no longer available for interviews. When Lucas died, I had no reason to believe the two cases were connected.””

“Until now.””

“Until now.””

He slid another document toward me.

It was a traffic camera summary from the night Lucas died.

“The truck driver admitted entering the intersection against a red light. That remains a central fact in the collision. However, a separate witness reported seeing a dark SUV following Lucas's vehicle several miles before the crash.””

My heart hammered.

“The black SUV?””

“We don't know whether it's the same vehicle described by Richard Cole. The witness could not identify the driver.””

“Was Courtney's company connected to the vehicle?””

“We are examining the registration records.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“Did someone cause the accident?””

Hale met my eyes.

“I can't tell you that based on what we have. The evidence establishes that another vehicle may have been following Lucas. It does not establish that the collision was intentional.””

I hated the answer.

But I respected him for refusing to promise what he couldn't prove.

“What about my mother?””

Hale opened the old report.

“Her accident occurred twenty-five years ago. The original records indicate that she was transported to the hospital after her vehicle left the roadway. The report states that the cause was undetermined.””

“Not a medical condition?””

“No.””

I looked at Samantha.

She had gone very still.

“Who changed it?”” I asked.

“That is what we're investigating,” Hale replied.

“The death certificate was issued using information that appears inconsistent with the original emergency documentation.””

“Can you prove who supplied that information?””

“We're working to obtain the full hospital and coroner records. We also need to determine whether any corrections were made after the initial report.””

I leaned forward.

“My father told me she died because she was sick. He told me she left nothing behind. He told me she had made bad decisions.””

Hale listened without interrupting.

“He took her money,” I continued.

“He used my name on accounts I never opened. And when I tried to ask questions, he threw me out of my own home while I was in labor.””

The detective's expression tightened.

“I have read the incident report from the paramedics. I've also reviewed the preliminary medical documentation concerning your injuries. The assault allegation will be handled separately from the estate investigation.””

“I understand.””

He closed the old report.

“There's something else. Before his death, Lucas contacted our office to ask about obtaining records related to an old collision.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What did he ask for?””

“He wanted the original witness statements from your mother's accident. He believed there was a connection between the financial records he had found and the circumstances surrounding her death.””

“Did he speak to you?””

“No. He spoke with an administrative officer, who referred him to the records department. We have located his request in the system.””

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“We didn't know about his connection to the estate investigation until Samantha provided the documents.””

I pressed my hands together.

Lucas had been trying to uncover the truth.

He had known my mother might not have died the way I was told.

And he had been following the trail before the accident that killed him.

“Was there a witness who saw my mother's vehicle being followed?”” I asked.

Hale nodded.

“One statement mentions a dark SUV. The witness described it as leaving the area shortly after the collision.””

“Who was the witness?””

“The name is in the original report. I'm not going to share personal information from a witness statement until we've verified the record and established what can appropriately be disclosed.””

I wanted to argue, but I understood.

This was no longer simply a family dispute. If the records suggested criminal conduct, the investigation had to be handled properly.

Hale stood.

“Mrs. Bennett, I want you to know that we are taking these allegations seriously. Please preserve every message, letter, and document you've received. Do not confront your father or Courtney about the evidence.””

“I have no intention of confronting them.””

He paused at the door.

“One more thing. We recovered a storage device from Lucas's vehicle. It was damaged in the collision, and the forensic team has been working to recover its contents.””

I sat up straighter.

“What was on it?””

“We don't know yet. But the device was registered to Lucas's company, and the last known file accessed before the collision was a document related to the Bennett Development Holdings trust.””

Samantha's eyes widened.

“Can you recover it?””

“The forensic team believes it may be possible.””

Hale left the room.

For a long time, I sat in silence.

Then I turned to Samantha.

“Lucas had the evidence.””

“He may have had some of it,” she said.

“We need to wait for the forensic results.””

I looked down at my wedding ring.

Lucas had known that my father was hiding something. He had tried to protect me without frightening me. He had built safeguards around our house, our finances, and our daughter.

But he hadn't been able to protect himself.

I pressed the ring against my lips.

“You should have told me,” I whispered.

I knew he couldn't hear me.

Still, I needed to say it.

That evening, I visited Grace.

The doctor told me she was improving and might be able to leave the incubator soon. I sat beside her, holding her hand through the opening while the nurse adjusted the monitor.

“Your daddy was trying to make the world safer for us,” I told her.

“I don't know everything he found. But I'm going to find out.””

My phone vibrated.

A message from Samantha.

The forensic team recovered part of the storage device. Detective Hale wants to meet with us tomorrow morning.

A second message followed.

One recovered file contains a scanned copy of the original company share register.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

The file also contains a photograph of Charles Bennett with the truck driver involved in Lucas's fatal collision.

I read it twice.

The truck driver.

The man who had run the red light.

Standing beside my father.

I called Samantha immediately.

“Is the photograph authentic?””

“It's a recovered digital file. Investigators are examining its metadata and origin.””

“When was it taken?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Why would my father be photographed with him?””

“That is precisely what Detective Hale wants to establish.””

I looked at Grace, asleep beneath her blanket.

For the first time, I allowed myself to consider the possibility that Lucas's death had not been a random tragedy.

But I would not let suspicion become certainty.

Not without proof.

The next morning, Detective Hale arrived with a new document.

He placed it on the table.

The photograph showed my father standing outside a restaurant with the truck driver.

The date in the recovered metadata was three days before Lucas died.
