Chapter 9: The Man Behind the Betrayal

Jonathan ended the call and shoved his phone into his pocket.

I watched him carefully.

"Where is Arthur?""

He said nothing.

"Jonathan, answer me.""

"He'll be here.""

"Good. Then we can finally have this conversation with everyone present.""

My brother laughed.

"You think you understand what's happening?""

"I understand that $2.6 million disappeared from my company.""

"You think that's the real money?""

I frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Jonathan looked toward Vanessa.

"Tell him.""

She shook her head.

"Please don't.""

"Tell him what Arthur said about the land.""

I stepped between them.

"What land?""

Jonathan smiled.

"Father's private development portfolio.""

Mr. Harrison had mentioned several properties in the trust.

But I hadn't yet examined the complete list.

"What's special about those properties?""

Jonathan pulled out his phone.

He opened a map and showed me several highlighted parcels across Georgia.

I recognized one immediately.

The Westlake industrial corridor.

Reed Meridian had been negotiating to purchase a large portion of that area for nearly two years.

Our planned development would include commercial buildings, apartments, and a logistics center.

The projected value exceeded $180 million.

"Those properties belong to the trust," Jonathan said.

"Yes.""

"And the trust belongs to me.""

"No, it doesn't.""

He laughed.

"That's what Arthur told me.""

"Arthur has lied to you.""

Jonathan stepped closer.

"Father gave me something more important than money. He gave me the original land agreements.""

I studied his face.

"Where are they?""

"Safe.""

"With Arthur?""

He didn't answer.

Before I could ask another question, two police officers entered the house.

One approached Jonathan.

"Sir, we need you to come with us.""

Jonathan raised his hands.

"What's this about?""

"We're investigating suspected financial fraud and an alleged incident at this residence.""

Jonathan looked at me.

"You did this?""

"I reported a crime.""

"You think your money makes you untouchable?""

"No. I think evidence matters.""

The officers escorted him outside.

Vanessa sank onto the sofa.

I stood near the doorway.

"Are you hurt?""

She shook her head.

"Why are you helping me?""

I looked at her.

"Because nobody deserves to be threatened in their own home.""

She covered her face.

For a moment, I almost remembered the woman I'd married.

Then I remembered the money scattered across the sidewalk.

"Marcus," she whispered, "I need to tell you something.""

"What?""

"Arthur didn't just pay me to leave you.""

I turned.

"What else?""

"He told me to get close to your father before the divorce.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because your father had been preparing to transfer the land portfolio into a protected trust. Arthur needed someone he could trust to access the documents.""

"And you agreed?""

She nodded.

"At first, I thought it was only about money. Arthur said I'd receive a share of the properties.""

"How much?""

"Ten percent.""

I shook my head.

"You sold your marriage for seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars and a promise of land.""

She began crying.

"I know.""

I looked toward the police car outside.

"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?""

"Because Arthur threatened me.""

"With what?""

She hesitated.

Then she reached into the lining of her handbag and removed a tiny silver flash drive.

"With this.""

I took it.

"What's on it?""

"Everything.""

"Everything what?""

"Every conversation. Every payment. Every instruction Arthur gave me.""

I stared at her.

"Why do you have this?""

"Because I eventually realized he was going to betray me too.""

She looked toward the window.

"Arthur told Jonathan that once he controlled the trust, he'd make sure neither of us ever saw a dollar.""

I turned the flash drive between my fingers.

"Why didn't you give this to the police?""

"Because the recordings contain something else.""

"What?""

Vanessa's voice became barely audible.

"A conversation about your father's death.""

I froze.

"My father died of cancer.""

"That's what everyone was told.""

"What are you saying?""

She looked directly at me.

"Arthur visited him the night before he died. They argued. Your father threatened to expose him.""

I felt the room tilt.

"Did Arthur hurt my father?""

"I don't know. But I have the recording.""

I looked at the flash drive.

My father had spent his final months trying to protect his family from the very people who were now destroying it.

And I had spent years believing his death was simply an unavoidable tragedy.

I called Emily.

"Have the forensic team examine this drive. Make a complete copy. Don't alter anything.""

"Understood.""

"And contact the detective handling the financial investigation.""

"Yes, sir.""

I ended the call.

Vanessa reached for my hand.

"Marcus, I'm sorry.""

I stepped away gently.

"I'm not ready to forgive you.""

"I understand.""

"But if that recording is real, you need to tell the police everything.""

She nodded.

As I walked toward the door, my phone rang.

Emily.

"Mr. Reed, we found something.""

"What?""

"The financial team has located the original account that funded the seven-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar payment to Vanessa four years ago.""

"Who owned it?""

"Arthur Bennett.""

I closed my eyes.

"Keep going.""

"There's another transfer from the same account. It was made three days before your father died.""

"To whom?""

Emily paused.

Then she spoke carefully.

"To a private medical consulting company.""

My stomach tightened.

"What's the connection?""

"The company provided medical services to your father's private physician.""

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was watching me with terrified eyes.

Then Emily delivered the final detail.

"Mr. Reed, the payment was authorized by someone using your father's personal banking credentials.""

I gripped the phone.

"Who had access to those credentials?""

"According to the bank's records...""

She hesitated.

"Your younger brother, Jonathan.""

I looked through the window at the police car carrying my brother away.

The financial betrayal was only the beginning.
