Chapter 12: The Man Who Bought Our Silence

I watched my father's recording twice before Rebecca shut the laptop.

The first time, I couldn't process anything beyond the DNA result.

The second time, I noticed the date in the corner of the screen.

My father had recorded the message less than a month before he died.

He had known Daniel was my son.

He had known the first test was wrong.

And he had known that Richard had diverted money intended to support the child we'd all been told was dead.

Yet he had left the truth sealed away in an attorney's office.

"How much money are we talking about?"" I asked.

Rebecca opened another folder.

"The original trust contained approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars. With accumulated interest, the projected balance would have exceeded six hundred thousand by the time Daniel reached adulthood.""

"And how much did Daniel receive?""

She consulted the records.

"According to the foundation's accounts, less than forty thousand dollars.""

Emily stared at the documents.

"Where did the rest go?""

Rebecca turned a page.

"Most of it was transferred to a company called Mercer Family Consulting. The company was dissolved several years ago.""

"Who owned it?""

"Richard Mercer.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, cars crawled through the rain, their headlights reflected in the wet pavement. Somewhere in the city, my son was living with the consequences of decisions made before he could speak.

I thought about the gold watch I'd bought Emily, the double shifts, and the money I'd sent every month while Jennifer told our daughter I had abandoned her.

I had spent twelve years believing I was fighting to remain a father.

All that time, another child of mine had been growing up with a different name, believing his biological parents had rejected him.

And the man who had engineered the separation was someone I had once trusted more than anyone.

Rebecca gathered the papers.

"There's a complication.""

I turned.

"What now?""

"The trust documents were amended after Thomas died. The amendment transferred control of the remaining assets to a private beneficiary.""

"Who?""

She slid the page toward me.

The name was Richard Mercer.

Emily slammed her palm against the table.

"He stole money intended for Daniel, and then he married my mother?""

Rebecca remained composed.

"I can't determine his intent from these documents alone. But the financial transfers warrant investigation.""

I looked at Detective Harris, who had joined us by telephone.

"We need to find Daniel.""

"We're already working on it," he replied.

"But there's something you should know. Richard has hired an attorney, and he's refusing further interviews.""

I clenched my jaw.

"Of course he is.""

After we left the law office, Emily and I drove to Richard's house.

Detective Harris had advised us not to confront him, but I needed answers, and Emily insisted she wanted to hear them from Richard himself.

We didn't intend to enter the house.

We simply wanted to speak with him.

Richard opened the door after our third knock.

His face hardened when he saw us.

"You shouldn't be here.""

I held up a copy of the trust amendment.

"You stole money intended for my son.""

Richard glanced at the document.

"That money was used to support the family.""

"Which family? Yours?""

"Michael, you have no idea what you're talking about.""

"Then explain it.""

He stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind him.

"Your father asked me to manage the trust. I invested the funds. Some investments failed.""

"Nearly half a million dollars failed?""

"I made decisions I regret.""

"Did you use the money to buy this house?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"I built a life for Emily and Jennifer. I paid for her education, her clothes, her activities. I was the one who showed up.""

Emily stepped forward.

"You paid for my life with money stolen from my brother?""

Richard looked at her.

"I never knew Daniel was Michael's son until recently.""

"But you knew he was alive.""

"Yes.""

"You knew my father was being lied to.""

Richard looked away.

"I believed the arrangement was necessary.""

"What arrangement?""

He rubbed his face.

"Your grandfather told me Daniel would be better off with another family. He said Michael was unstable after the accident, that Jennifer couldn't manage two children, and that the baby needed opportunities the Carters couldn't provide.""

I stared at him.

"My father was unconscious when you took my son.""

Richard's voice rose.

"I didn't take him! Thomas arranged the placement!""

"And you profited from it!""

He fell silent.

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"You let me grow up believing my father was worthless. You sat beside me at school events, smiling while my mother told everyone he had abandoned us.""

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what? The truth?""

Richard reached for her arm.

She stepped away.

"Don't touch me.""

He lowered his hand.

For the first time, I saw something resembling shame on his face.

"I made mistakes," he said.

"Those weren't mistakes," Emily replied.

"You made choices. Every time you could have told the truth, you chose to lie.""

Richard looked at me.

"Thomas said he would destroy me if I revealed what happened.""

I stared at him.

"My father was dead when the second DNA test was completed. You could have told me then.""

Richard had no answer.

A car pulled into the driveway.

Jennifer stepped out, carrying a handbag and a thick envelope. She stopped when she saw us.

"What are you doing here?""

Emily turned toward her.

"Trying to find out why every adult in my life thought lying to me was acceptable.""

Jennifer's face crumpled.

"Emily, please. I never wanted to hurt you.""

"But you did.""

Jennifer looked at me.

"I was scared. Thomas threatened to take everything from us. He said if I told Michael about Daniel, he'd make sure I lost both children.""

I stared at her.

"So you let me believe I'd lost my son forever?""

She began crying.

"I thought he was protecting us.""

"By hiding a child?""

"By keeping the family together!""

I shook my head.

"You didn't keep the family together, Jennifer. You taught our daughter to hate her father while our son grew up believing nobody wanted him.""

She covered her mouth.

Emily looked at the envelope in her mother's hand.

"What's that?""

Jennifer hesitated.

Then she handed it to her.

Inside were several letters, all addressed to Jennifer in handwriting I recognized immediately.

My father's.

Emily unfolded the first letter.

She read silently for a few seconds, then looked up.

"Mom, Grandpa wrote to you after Daniel was placed with the Mercers.""

Jennifer nodded.

"What did he say?"" I asked.

Emily's voice trembled as she read aloud.

"The child must remain hidden until Michael's financial circumstances are secure. If he discovers the truth too soon, he may challenge the arrangement and lose the inheritance intended for both children."

I frowned.

"The inheritance was intended for both of us?""

Jennifer nodded.

"There was a second trust. Your father told me it would be divided between you and Daniel when the truth could safely be revealed.""

"Then why did Richard get the money?""

She turned toward her husband.

Richard's face had gone pale.

Jennifer opened another letter.

"This one is dated two years after Thomas died.""

Emily read the first line.

"Richard has betrayed us. He has transferred the trust assets into his own company and is preparing to leave the country. I have evidence of the theft, but I cannot expose it without revealing my own role in Daniel's disappearance."

I looked at Richard.

He took a step backward.

Jennifer continued reading.

"If Michael ever discovers what happened, tell him that I am responsible for the original deception. But tell him also that Richard's actions were not part of my plan."

Emily lowered the letter.

"Mom, you knew Richard had stolen the money.""

Jennifer nodded weakly.

"Yes.""

"And you stayed married to him?""

"I was afraid.""

Emily looked at her for a long moment.

Then she asked the question that seemed to break whatever remained of Jennifer's composure.

"Did you ever love him?""

Jennifer's mouth trembled.

"I thought I did.""

Richard suddenly turned toward the front door.

"That's enough.""

But Emily held up the final letter.

"There's one more page.""

She unfolded it.

The handwriting was shaky, as though my father had written it shortly before his death.

Jennifer, if you are reading this, then Richard has likely discovered that Daniel is Michael's biological son. Do not trust him with the original DNA report. Do not let him destroy the evidence.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

The truth about Daniel's birth is only half the secret.

Emily looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Jennifer stared at the page.

Richard began backing toward his car.

I stepped in front of him.

"Where are you going?""

He looked at me with naked desperation.

"Michael, you need to understand something. Thomas wasn't the only person who wanted Daniel hidden.""

"Who else?""

Richard glanced toward Jennifer.

She began shaking her head.

"Don't," she whispered.

Richard ignored her.

"Your son wasn't just the beneficiary of an inheritance. He was the heir to a property your father had kept secret for decades.""

I frowned.

"What property?""

Richard swallowed.

"A piece of land in Tennessee. Your father bought it through a company in 1989. The land contains something worth far more than the trust.""

"What?""

Richard looked directly at me.

"Natural gas.""

The words hung between us.

Then he added, "And if Daniel is your biological son, he may be the only person legally entitled to control it.""

Emily stared at him.

"How much is it worth?""

Richard's face tightened.

"More than a hundred million dollars.""

I felt the world shift beneath my feet.

My father hadn't hidden Daniel merely because of family pride or a misguided inheritance.

May you like

He had hidden him because someone wanted control of a fortune.

And judging by the way Richard was now staring at the envelope in Emily's hands, I had a terrible feeling that the people responsible for keeping my son a secret had never stopped watching him.
