Chapter 10: The Son Who Was Never His
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Laura Mercer remained on the phone, breathing softly on the other end, while Emily stared at me as though the floor had disappeared beneath us both.
“My father had a DNA test?”” I finally asked.
“Yes,” Laura replied.
“He told my husband about it years ago.””
“And what did it say?””
“I don't know the exact results. Richard might.””
I turned toward Detective Harris.
He was already writing something in his notebook.
“Laura,” I continued, “why would my father tell Richard something like that?””
“Because he believed Daniel was the rightful heir to his estate. He thought you had been given everything while Daniel had been denied even the chance to know his family.””
I gripped the edge of the conference table.
“My father raised me. He taught me to drive. He sat beside my bed when I had pneumonia. He attended my wedding.””
“I know.””
“He called me his son every day of his life.””
Laura's voice softened.
“Michael, I'm not saying he didn't love you. I'm telling you what he believed.””
I ended the call after obtaining her contact information.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Emily pulled her chair closer to mine.
“Dad, does this change anything?””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Whether Grandpa was your biological father. Does it change who you are?””
I wanted to tell her no.
I wanted to say that blood didn't matter, that love was enough, that the man who raised you was your father regardless of what a laboratory report claimed.
But I was thinking about the inheritance agreement I'd signed before my wedding. I was thinking about the money my father had transferred to Daniel, the lies he'd told, and the way he'd hidden an entire child from me.
I was also thinking about the possibility that the man whose approval I'd spent my life chasing had secretly believed I didn't belong to him.
“No,” I finally said.
“It doesn't change who I am.””
Emily squeezed my hand.
“But it changes what I thought I knew about him.””
That was the truth.
And it hurt.
Detective Harris closed his notebook.
“We need to speak with Richard. If he has information about the DNA test, it could help establish the motive behind the transfer.””
We returned to Nashville that afternoon.
Richard had been released after his initial interview, but he agreed to meet us at the police station. Jennifer remained at home under instructions not to destroy or alter any documents relevant to the investigation.
When Richard entered the interview room, he looked older than he had at graduation.
His expensive suit was gone. He wore a wrinkled shirt, and his hands trembled as he sat across from us.
Detective Harris placed a copy of the photograph on the table.
“Mr. Mercer, do you recognize this?””
Richard nodded.
“That's Daniel.””
“Did you know Michael Carter's father?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Richard rubbed his palms together.
“Thomas approached me shortly after my first marriage ended. He said he knew about my attempts to adopt a child and wanted to help.””
“Why would he do that?””
Richard looked at me.
“Because he believed you weren't his biological son.””
I felt the familiar pressure in my chest.
“Tell me exactly what he said.””
Richard swallowed.
“He told me your mother had confessed to having an affair before you were born. He said he had raised you because he believed you were his child, but a medical issue had caused him to question your paternity.””
“What medical issue?””
“I don't know.””
“Did he show you the DNA test?””
Richard hesitated.
“Yes.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
“I don't know. Thomas showed it to me once, but I never kept a copy.””
“What did it say?””
Richard looked down.
“It said he wasn't your biological father.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the man who had helped raise my daughter while encouraging her to believe I was worthless.
“Did my father ever tell you who my biological father was?””
Richard nodded reluctantly.
“He mentioned a man named David Bennett.””
The name meant nothing to me.
“Who was he?””
“An old friend of your mother's.””
I shook my head.
“My mother died when I was twelve. She never told me about any David Bennett.””
“Thomas said she had kept the affair secret because she was afraid of losing her marriage.””
Detective Harris made another note.
“And how did this relate to Daniel?””
Richard's shoulders slumped.
“Thomas believed Daniel was his biological grandson through another branch of the family.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
“Thomas told me Daniel's biological father was his nephew.””
The words made no sense.
My father had called Daniel the boy he saved. He had hidden him from me, funded his future, and redirected my inheritance.
But if Daniel's father was my father's nephew, then the relationship was more complicated than anyone had admitted.
Detective Harris asked, “Did Thomas provide a name?””
Richard nodded.
“Andrew Carter.””
I froze.
Andrew had been my father's younger brother.
He'd died in a construction accident when I was seventeen.
My father had always described Andrew as irresponsible, a man who never settled down and couldn't be trusted with money. They'd argued for years before his death.
I'd never known Andrew had a child.
Richard continued.
“Thomas told me Andrew had been involved with Jennifer before you married her. He believed Daniel was Andrew's son, not yours.””
I looked at him in disbelief.
“Jennifer and I were married when Emily was born.””
“Yes.””
“And she was carrying my child.””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“Thomas believed the second baby belonged to Andrew.””
I felt sick.
Emily gripped my arm.
“Dad, are you saying Daniel might be your cousin instead of your brother?””
“I don't know what I'm saying anymore.””
Detective Harris gathered the documents.
“We'll need independent DNA testing. No more assumptions based on what Thomas Carter believed.””
Richard nodded.
Then he looked directly at me.
“Michael, there's something else I haven't told you.””
I waited.
“When Daniel was sixteen, Thomas contacted me. He wanted to change the inheritance arrangement. He said he had made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
“He said the DNA test had been wrong.””
My heart began pounding.
“Wrong how?””
Richard reached into his pocket and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“I kept this because I knew one day someone would come looking for the truth.””
He placed it on the table.
It was a laboratory report dated six months before my father's death.
The names were partially obscured, but the conclusion was clear.
*Thomas Carter could not be excluded as the biological grandfather of Daniel Mercer.*
Below it was another line.
*Paternity relationship requires confirmation through direct testing.*
I looked up.
“So my father finally realized Daniel might actually be his grandson.””
Richard nodded.
“But by then, the foundation had already placed Daniel with another family. Thomas was sick. He tried to contact him, but Laura said Daniel didn't want anything to do with the Carter family.””
“Why?””
Richard's voice dropped.
“Because he believed his biological parents had abandoned him.””
I closed my eyes.
Another generation destroyed by lies.
When I opened them, Richard was staring at me.
“Michael, Thomas left one final instruction in his will. He said that if you ever discovered the truth, you should receive a sealed envelope.””
Detective Harris leaned forward.
“Where is it?””
Richard shook his head.
“I don't have it. His attorney does.””
“Who?””
Richard gave us a name.
And when Detective Harris looked it up, his expression changed.
The attorney had died three years earlier.
But his office records had been transferred to a law firm that was still operating.
Richard looked at me.
“There's one thing Thomas wrote on the outside of that envelope.””
I waited.
May you like
Richard's voice dropped to a whisper.
“To the son I raised, when he finally learns why I chose the other one.”
