Chapter 15: The Woman Who Was Never Supposed to Inherit
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Vanessa held the document like a winning lottery ticket.
"Surprised?"" she asked.
I stared at my mother's signature.
"That's impossible.""
She smiled.
"Your grandfather was a smart man. He knew the Blackwoods would eventually destroy themselves. So he created another beneficiary.""
Emma stepped closer.
"Why would he choose you?""
Vanessa laughed.
"Because my mother worked for this family for twenty years. She was the only person your grandfather trusted.""
My father shook his head.
"Your mother was our housekeeper.""
"She was also his daughter.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Richard.
He appeared genuinely shocked.
Vanessa continued.
"My mother was born before your grandfather married your grandmother. He never acknowledged her publicly, but he provided for her privately.""
She tapped the document.
"And when he discovered the family was falling apart, he made sure his bloodline would survive.""
Emma looked at the paper.
"Then why did you become Adrian's fiancée?""
Vanessa's expression softened.
"For the same reason everyone else wanted the Blackwood name.""
I stared at her.
"You knew about the inheritance before we got engaged?""
She nodded.
"My mother told me everything. I was supposed to marry Adrian, gain access to the family, and wait until your grandfather's trust became active.""
"Then why did you try to kill me?""
Her smile disappeared.
"Because you discovered the financial transfers. You were going to expose everything.""
"And the accident?""
"Victor arranged it.""
I looked at the document again.
"Did you know about my mother's survival?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know she was my mother?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Thomas told me.""
I felt anger rise inside me.
"You knew all this time.""
She shrugged.
"Your mother was a threat. Thomas kept her hidden because she knew about the original trust.""
My mother wasn't there to hear it.
But I could imagine the pain in her eyes.
I looked toward the countdown.
"Vanessa, put the gun down.""
She shook her head.
"First, the inheritance.""
Emma stepped forward.
"You can have it.""
I turned toward her.
"Emma!""
She looked at me.
"If it means nobody else gets hurt, she can have it.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Finally. Someone in this family understands negotiation.""
But Emma wasn't finished.
"However, you need to know something.""
Vanessa frowned.
"What?""
Emma removed the silver locket.
"My mother didn't give me this just to remember her.""
She opened the hidden compartment and pulled out the tiny folded document.
The original trust instructions.
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Give me that.""
Emma shook her head.
"The document you have is an amendment. It was never properly registered.""
Vanessa stared at her.
"That's a lie.""
My father stepped toward the console.
"She's right.""
He pointed to a small paragraph at the bottom of the original agreement.
"Any amendment made without the signatures of all three surviving triplets is invalid.""
Vanessa looked at me.
Then at Emma.
Then at Richard.
She slowly lowered the document.
"No.""
Emma continued.
"And there's another condition.""
She unfolded the paper.
"If any beneficiary attempts to harm another family member, their claim is automatically revoked.""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
I looked at her.
"You tried to kill me.""
She shook her head.
"That doesn't count.""
"You pushed my wheelchair toward the staircase.""
"I didn't know you could walk!""
"You helped arrange the crash.""
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Then Samuel's voice came through the control room speaker.
"Vanessa, stop talking.""
She looked toward the camera.
"Samuel?""
"Give me the document.""
Vanessa suddenly understood.
He had never intended to share the inheritance with her.
She had been another pawn.
"You promised me everything," she shouted.
Samuel laughed.
"I promised you a chance.""
Vanessa raised the gun toward the camera.
"You're using me!""
"Of course.""
She turned toward us.
Her hands were shaking.
For one terrible moment, I thought she might fire.
Then Emma stepped closer.
"Vanessa, you don't have to do this.""
Vanessa looked at her.
"Stay away.""
"You can still walk out of here.""
"After everything?""
"Yes.""
Vanessa began crying.
"I gave up my entire life for this family.""
I looked at her.
"No, Vanessa. You gave up your humanity for money.""
She lowered the weapon.
At that moment, my father lunged toward the control panel.
He pulled the emergency lever.
The countdown stopped.
The red lights disappeared.
The system powered down.
Vanessa dropped the gun.
Emma stepped away.
I rushed toward her and pulled her behind me.
The control room door burst open.
Agent Brooks and two officers entered.
"Nobody move!""
Vanessa raised her hands.
Samuel's voice screamed through the speaker.
"You idiots! You have no idea what you've done!""
Brooks looked toward the control panel.
"We've got him.""
A moment later, another officer spoke through his radio.
"Suspect Samuel Hayes has been apprehended at the eastern gate.""
I exhaled.
For the first time in seven months, I felt safe.
But the biggest surprise came twenty minutes later.
Agent Brooks approached us with a tablet.
"Adrian, we recovered the original recordings from Samuel's phone.""
He played one.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
"Once Richard signs the documents, Adrian becomes unnecessary.""
Victor replied.
"And the woman?""
Thomas answered.
"Margaret stays where she is. The children must never know she's alive.""
Then another voice spoke.
A voice I recognized.
Vanessa.
"What about the third child?""
Thomas laughed.
"Elizabeth is already taken care of.""
The recording ended.
Brooks looked at us.
"That proves the conspiracy involved all three suspects.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She sat handcuffed beside the wall.
Her head was lowered.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
Six months later, the Blackwood mansion looked different.
The old security system had been replaced. The basement had been sealed, and the marble staircase where Vanessa had tried to kill me had been covered with a large family photograph.
It showed five people.
My mother.
My father.
Emma.
Elizabeth.
And me.
Lily stood in front of us, holding my mother's hand.
Samuel and Victor were awaiting trial. Vanessa had been charged with conspiracy, attempted murder, and fraud. The evidence from the recordings had exposed their entire operation.
Richard resigned from Blackwood Holdings.
He spent his days helping investigators recover money stolen from the company.
He also began attending family therapy with my mother.
Forgiveness wasn't immediate.
Some wounds were too deep for that.
But my mother was alive.
And that was enough for us to begin again.
Emma became the legal trustee of the family inheritance. Elizabeth joined the Blackwood Foundation, focusing on helping children who had been separated from their biological families.
I returned to running the company.
And I stopped hiding my ability to walk.
One afternoon, Emma found me standing beside the marble staircase.
She smiled.
"Still thinking about that night?""
I nodded.
"I keep remembering how close I came to falling.""
She looked at the first step.
"You didn't fall.""
"No. You stopped me.""
Emma laughed.
"Actually, I nearly broke my knee doing it.""
I smiled.
"I owe you for that.""
She shook her head.
"You owe me lunch.""
We walked toward the dining room together.
Then my mother called us.
"Children! Come here!""
We entered the living room.
She was sitting beside Elizabeth, holding an old wooden box.
"I found something in your grandfather's belongings," she said.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed to all three of us.
My mother's eyes filled with tears as I read it aloud.
To my grandchildren,
If this letter has reached you, then the secrets of the Blackwood family have finally been uncovered.
I know you will discover things about your parents, your uncle, and yourselves that will be difficult to accept.
But remember this: wealth can be stolen. Names can be changed. People can lie about blood.
Yet love is not inherited through money.
It is proven through the choices we make when someone we love is in danger.
I stopped reading.
Emma wiped her eyes.
Elizabeth reached for my hand.
Then my mother spoke.
"There's one more thing.""
We looked at her.
She smiled through her tears.
"Your grandfather left something for the person who saved the family.""
I laughed.
"Emma already got the inheritance.""
My mother shook her head.
"No. This is something different.""
She handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a photograph taken seven months earlier.
It showed Emma kneeling beside my wheelchair, desperately pulling me away from the staircase.
On the back, my grandfather had written:
The strongest person in this family was never the one who inherited the fortune. It was the one who refused to let another person fall.
I looked at Emma.
She was crying again.
I pulled her into a hug.
For thirty-one years, our family had been divided by secrets, greed, and betrayal.
But that night, something finally changed.
I had spent seven months pretending I couldn't walk because I wanted to discover who would stay when I had nothing left to offer.
Vanessa had shown me what money could buy.
Victor had shown me what greed could destroy.
Thomas had shown me how far hatred could reach.
But Emma had shown me something none of them understood.
Real love doesn't ask what you can give.
It simply refuses to let you fall.
And when I finally stood up, I discovered that the person who had saved my life wasn't the one I had once promised to marry.
It was the woman who had never asked me for anything.
