Chapter 14: The Signature That Destroyed Us

“Drop the weapon!””

The lieutenant's command exploded through the radio.

On the screen, Victoria raised the gun toward Rachel.

Nora screamed.

I slammed my fist against the dashboard.

“Get my daughter out of there!””

The tactical team moved into position, but Thomas stood between the hostages and the nearest exit.

Victoria's gun trembled.

“Everyone stay back!”” she shouted.

Rachel held her hands up.

“Victoria, please. This doesn't have to end like this.””

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You don't get to tell me how this ends.””

“You're not going to shoot a child.””

“Don't pretend you know me.””

Rachel took a careful step sideways, placing herself between Victoria and Nora.

“I know what Vanessa did to you.””

Victoria's expression changed.

“Don't say her name.””

“She used you. She stole your money, your identity, and your future. She told you that if you helped her, you'd both be free.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“You don't know anything about us.””

“I know she left you to take the blame when the company collapsed.””

Victoria's grip tightened around the gun.

“And what would you know about being abandoned?””

Rachel's voice broke.

“More than you think.””

For a moment, the warehouse fell silent.

Then Thomas laughed.

“Enough of this sentimental nonsense.””

He stepped toward Rachel and held up the document.

“Daniel signed the authorization. Victoria arranged the payment. Vanessa hired Marcus. Everyone played their part.””

My father went rigid beside me.

“I never authorized a crash.””

The lieutenant turned toward him.

“What does the document say?””

My father leaned toward the screen.

“I can't read it from here.””

Thomas unfolded the paper and held it toward the camera.

The first page contained my father's signature. Beneath it was a transfer authorization directing money to Northstar Protective Services.

But the second page was different.

It contained a handwritten instruction.

*Ensure Rachel Miller cannot testify. Use any means necessary.*

My father covered his mouth.

“No.””

Rachel stared at the document.

“Daniel, did you write that?””

“No!”” he shouted.

“I signed a financial transfer. I never wrote those words.””

Thomas smiled.

“Perhaps you should have read what you signed.””

My father looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

He had signed a document without understanding its full contents, trusting people who had already betrayed him. That single act had given them the authority they needed to threaten Rachel, falsify records, and turn our family against itself.

But the document still didn't prove he had ordered the crash.

The lieutenant spoke quietly into his radio.

“Team Two, prepare to move on my signal. Hostages are priority one.””

Inside the warehouse, Rachel kept her eyes on Victoria.

“You don't have to protect Thomas,” she said.

Victoria's face twisted.

“He promised me everything.””

“And what did he give you?””

Victoria glanced toward Thomas.

He didn't look at her.

He was studying the exit.

Rachel noticed.

“He's going to leave you here,” she whispered.

“Just like Vanessa did.””

Victoria's gun wavered.

Thomas suddenly grabbed Nora and pulled her toward a metal staircase.

“Enough! The records are gone, and so is the girl.””

Nora screamed.

Rachel lunged forward.

Victoria spun toward her.

“Stop!””

Rachel froze.

Thomas dragged Nora onto the first step.

I couldn't take it anymore.

I grabbed the radio.

“Thomas! You want the records? I'll give them to you!””

The lieutenant seized my wrist.

“Mr. Miller, stop talking!””

But Thomas had heard me.

He turned toward the camera.

“Now we're getting somewhere.””

“I have copies of everything,” I said.

“The transfers, the medical files, the payment records. I'll exchange them for Nora.””

Thomas smiled.

“Bring them inside.””

“I want to see my daughter first.””

He hesitated.

Then he shoved Nora toward the lower platform.

She ran straight into Rachel's arms.

The lieutenant whispered into the radio.

“Move now.””

The officers surged through the service entrance.

Victoria dropped the gun and raised her hands. Thomas tried to escape up the staircase, but two officers intercepted him. Another team secured the warehouse exits.

Within seconds, Thomas was on the ground, his wrists cuffed behind his back.

Rachel held Nora tightly against her chest.

“Are you hurt, sweetheart?””

Nora shook her head, sobbing.

“I want Daddy.””

I rushed into the warehouse with the officers' permission once the immediate danger was contained.

Nora threw herself into my arms.

I held her so tightly she squeaked.

“I'm here, baby. I've got you.””

She buried her face in my neck.

“Please don't let them take Mommy again.””

I looked over her shoulder at Rachel.

“Never.””

But the relief lasted only a moment.

Thomas was being led past us when he stopped beside my father.

“You still don't understand, Daniel.””

My father stared at him.

“Understand what?””

Thomas laughed.

“You think I invented the plan? You think Vanessa and I were clever enough to control all those people?””

The officers tightened their grip on his arms.

Thomas looked directly at me.

“The person who ordered the original crash is still out there. And that person has been helping you all along.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Thomas smiled.

“Look at the signature on the second page.””

An officer retrieved the document from the floor and handed it to the lieutenant.

I stepped closer.

The handwritten instruction wasn't signed by my father.

Beneath the sentence was a name.

*Eleanor Shaw.*

Rachel stared at it.

“That's impossible. Eleanor was a bookkeeper.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No. Eleanor was the person who discovered the fraud. She was also the person who arranged the original meeting between Vanessa and your father.””

My father looked horrified.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

Thomas leaned toward me.

“Eleanor didn't die two years ago. The woman you saw in the photograph was her sister. Vanessa gave you the wrong identity because she wanted you chasing ghosts.””

I felt sick.

“Where is Eleanor?””

Thomas's smile disappeared.

“That's the problem, Ethan. She's been living under a new name for six years.””

He looked toward the police officers.

“And she's the one who told me where to find Nora.””

Rachel went completely still.

I looked at her.

“Who could have known where Nora was?””

Her eyes widened.

Then she turned toward the warehouse entrance.

Standing beside the medical team was a woman I recognized from the chapel.

Vanessa's maid of honor.

May you like

She was holding a phone.

And when she saw us looking at her, she turned and ran.
