Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

I didn’t speak.

I couldn’t.

The kitchen suddenly felt too small.

Too crowded.

Too full of secrets.

Vanessa stared at me, watching my face change.

“Who is it?”” she demanded.

I ignored her.

The woman on the phone whispered again.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Rachel.””

I looked at Vanessa.

The color had drained from her face.

“You know her?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Rachel,” I said slowly, “what did you mean when you said you helped my wife hide something?””

The silence on the other end lasted several seconds.

Then:

“I worked at the daycare Emma attended last year.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“The daycare?””

“Yes.””

I remembered it.

The complaints.

The sudden change.

Vanessa had told me Emma was too emotional and needed a different environment.

I believed her.

Rachel continued.

“Emma started telling me things.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Hang up.””

I turned away from her.

“What things?””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“She told me she was afraid to go home.””

My heart shattered.

“She said her mommy was angry when you weren’t around.””

I closed my eyes.

Behind me, I heard Vanessa move.

“Mark, don’t listen to this.””

Rachel continued.

“I reported my concerns.””

I opened my eyes.

“What happened?””

“She withdrew Emma from the daycare two days later.””

My stomach dropped.

“She told everyone I was lying.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said you changed daycares because it was too expensive.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Rachel breathed heavily.

“There’s more.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What?””

“I found something after Emma left.””

“What?””

“A notebook.””

The kitchen became completely silent.

“What kind of notebook?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Emma’s.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was staring at me.

Like she already knew what was coming.

“What was inside?””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“Pages of drawings.””

I swallowed.

“Drawings of what?””

“She drew the pantry.””

My eyes moved toward the locked door.

“She wrote that she was put inside there when she cried too much.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

Rachel continued.

“I didn’t know how to reach you. Vanessa made sure I couldn’t.””

I looked at my wife.

“You blocked her?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“She’s crazy.””

But there was panic in her voice.

Rachel heard her.

“She’s there, isn’t she?””

I didn’t answer.

Rachel sighed.

“Mark, you need to understand something.””

“What?””

“Emma didn’t tell you because she was scared Vanessa would punish her.””

My daughter looked down.

That hurt worse than anything.

I walked toward her and kneeled.

“Emma.””

She slowly looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell Daddy?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Mommy said you’d be angry.””

My chest tightened.

“At you?””

She shook her head.

“At her.””

I looked behind me.

Vanessa was standing near the counter.

The same woman I had married.

The same woman who held Emma in the hospital after she was born.

The same woman I trusted.

But suddenly, she felt like a stranger.

I stood up.

“You lied to me.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re really doing this?””

“Doing what?””

“Choosing her.””

I stared at her.

“She’s our daughter.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“No.””

That single word froze me.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You don’t know everything.””

My phone was still connected.

Rachel was silent.

Vanessa looked at the pantry.

Then back at me.

“There’s a reason I locked that door.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Why?””

She smiled faintly.

Not with kindness.

With confidence.

“Because if you open the box inside, you’ll finally understand why Emma has been lying.””

I looked toward the pantry.

The locked room.

The hidden blanket.

The drawings.

Then I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.

Behind the shelves was a small wooden box.

Covered in dust.

And written on top were four words.

My daughter’s handwriting.

“Daddy, don’t trust Mommy.””

I reached for it.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered:

“Once you open that box, our family will never be the same.””
