Chapter 12: The Account That Changed Everything
I stared at the name on the account.
My hands went numb.
I read it again.
Because maybe I was wrong.
Maybe exhaustion had finally caught up with me.
But the name didn’t change.
Ethan.
I knew that name.
Everyone did.
Ethan was Vanessa’s younger brother.
The same man who had disappeared from our lives two years earlier.
The same man Vanessa said she had cut off forever.
I looked at the transactions.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger.
Thousands of dollars.
Transferred over months.
My head was spinning.
“What is this?””
Vanessa saw the screen.
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Anger.
“You went through my finances?””
“My lawyer did.””
Her expression hardened.
“You had no right.””
I laughed quietly.
“No right?””
I turned the phone toward her.
“You were moving our money to Ethan?””
She looked away.
“He needed help.””
“Help?””
I looked at Emma.
“We couldn’t buy groceries for our daughter, but you were sending money to him?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then explain.””
She said nothing.
Dr. Collins looked confused.
“Who is Ethan?””
I answered.
“Her brother.””
The doctor frowned.
“I thought he lived out of state.””
“He does.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why was he getting money?””
Silence.
Then Emma whispered:
“Daddy?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
“Is Uncle Ethan the man Mommy talks to at night?””
My entire body went still.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Emma.””
I stepped forward.
“What man?””
Emma immediately covered her mouth.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I knelt beside her.
“You did nothing wrong.””
She looked terrified.
“Mommy said I wasn’t supposed to listen.””
“Listen to what?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“When she was on the phone.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You talked to Ethan at night?””
“It’s not what you think.””
I hated that sentence.
Because it was always the sentence people used when it was exactly what it looked like.
“Then tell me what it is.””
Vanessa sat down.
For the first time, she looked tired.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“I was trying to fix things.””
“What things?””
“Our life.””
I stared at her.
“You destroyed our life.””
She looked at Emma.
“No.””
Her voice softened.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“From you leaving.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You think Emma wasn’t scared of losing you?””
I looked at my daughter.
“She was.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was always afraid you would disappear.””
My chest tightened.
Because there was truth buried inside the manipulation.
I had been gone too much.
I had missed things.
Important things.
But that didn’t justify what Vanessa did.
Vanessa continued.
“I thought if I made her less dependent on you, she wouldn’t hurt when you weren’t around.””
I stared at her.
“You broke her trust to prepare her for losing me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
The room became quiet.
Then my phone rang.
The lawyer.
I answered.
“Hello?””
His voice was serious.
“Mark, I found something else.””
“What?””
“Ethan wasn’t just receiving money.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“What do you mean?””
A pause.
Then:
“He was helping Vanessa gather information about you.””
My stomach dropped.
“Information?””
“Yes.””
“What kind?””
Another pause.
“Your work schedule.””
I felt cold.
“Why?””
My lawyer’s voice lowered.
“Because they were tracking your absences.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why would they need that?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the lawyer said:
“Because there was a custody filing prepared before you found your daughter.””
I closed my eyes.
The plan.
The papers.
The lies.
Everything had been prepared.
But then my lawyer said one final thing.
Something that changed everything.
“Mark… there’s one more document.””
“What document?””
“A private agreement between Vanessa and Ethan.””
My heart stopped.
“What kind of agreement?””
The lawyer hesitated.
May you like
Then answered:
“An agreement about what they planned to do with Emma after they took custody.””
