Chapter 13: The Voice Behind the Door

For three seconds, nobody breathed.

Then the voice came again.

“Claire.””

My knees nearly gave out.

It was my husband's voice.

Not similar.

Not distorted.

His.

The same low warmth that used to call me from the kitchen when dinner was ready.

The officer raised one hand.

“Everyone stay behind me.””

He approached the steel door.

“Who is inside?””

Silence.

Then three knocks.

“Claire,” the voice said again.

“Don't open this door.””

I stared at Sarah.

She was trembling.

“That's Dad.””

“No,” I whispered.

The officer looked at me.

“Do you recognize the voice?””

“Yes.””

“Could it be a recording?””

I nodded slowly.

“Maybe.””

Daniel pointed toward the wall.

“There’s a speaker.””

A tiny black device was mounted above the door.

The voice continued.

“Richard is lying.””

The officer immediately moved closer.

“Who is Richard?””

No answer.

I stepped forward.

“Whoever you are, tell me what happened to my husband.””

The speaker crackled.

Then the voice said:

“He didn't die here.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then where?””

The answer came after a long pause.

“At the river.””

Sarah made a broken sound.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head violently.

“I knew Richard said there was an accident. I didn't know where.””

The officer examined the speaker.

“This is prerecorded.””

My heart sank.

Of course it was.

My husband was dead.

Four years dead.

But someone had built this moment knowing exactly what his voice would do to me.

The officer found a control box beneath the speaker.

Daniel crouched beside it.

“There’s a timer.””

“Can you shut it off?”” the officer asked.

“Yes.””

He disconnected the wire.

The voice stopped.

Silence rushed back into the tunnel.

Then something metallic clattered behind the door.

The officer stepped back.

“Everybody move.””

The steel door suddenly unlocked.

It swung inward.

There was no person behind it.

Only a small room.

A table.

Two chairs.

A surveillance monitor.

And hundreds of documents stacked along the walls.

Sarah whispered, “Oh my God.””

I walked inside.

The monitor displayed live footage of the cottage.

Our basement.

The bedroom.

The driveway.

Someone had been watching us.

Daniel pointed to another screen.

“That's from yesterday.””

I saw myself entering the cottage.

Then Sarah arriving.

Then Linda.

Then the storage unit.

Every movement had been recorded.

The officer immediately photographed the equipment.

“Who's controlling this?””

I looked at the desk.

A laptop sat open.

The screen displayed a file titled:

*MILLER — FINAL TRANSFER.*

Beneath it was another folder.

*ACCIDENT REPORT.*

I clicked it.

A police report appeared.

My husband's death.

Date.

Location.

Cause.

Everything I remembered.

Then I saw the signature of the investigating officer.

I recognized the name.

“Wait.””

The officer leaned over.

“What?””

“This officer.””

I pointed.

“He was at my husband's funeral.””

The officer frowned.

“Do you know him?””

“No. But Richard does.””

The laptop chimed.

A new message appeared.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE COTTAGE.*

Then another.

*NOW THE TRUTH WILL COST YOU YOUR DAUGHTER.*

Sarah grabbed my hand.

“Mom.””

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed Sarah standing outside the cottage three months earlier.

Beside her was Richard.

But that wasn't what made me gasp.

Behind them stood my husband.

Alive.

I stared at the photograph.

“No.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“That's impossible.””

The timestamp read:

*October 14, 2022.*

Six weeks after my husband supposedly died.

I touched the screen.

My fingers shook.

“Sarah…”

She was staring at the image.

Then she whispered:

“Dad was alive.””

A sound came from the laptop speakers.

Not prerecorded this time.

A live connection.

A man's voice said:

“Yes.””

We both froze.

“Claire,” he said.

I knew that voice.

But it wasn't my husband's.

It was Richard.

May you like

And then he said the words that changed everything.

“Your husband didn't die that night. *We made the world believe he did.*”
