Chapter 2: The Thing Hidden in Her Purse

Daniel replayed the footage.

He dragged the timeline backward with his thumb, stopping just before Vanessa tore her blouse.

“Look at me,” he said to her.

“Tell me this isn't what it looks like.””

Vanessa pressed both hands against her chest, trying to cover the torn fabric.

“Daniel, you're taking everything out of context.””

He looked at the screen again.

“Out of context? You pulled your own hair.””

“I was scared!””

“You were standing right in front of him!””

“He was threatening me!””

I leaned against the dining table, holding a folded dish towel against my bleeding lip.

“Daniel, I didn't threaten her. I told her I wouldn't sign the house over.””

Vanessa spun toward me.

“Stop talking!””

Daniel stepped between us.

“No. You don't get to tell him to stop talking anymore. Not until I understand what happened.””

For a moment, I felt a small flicker of hope.

Perhaps my son was finally seeing the truth.

Then Vanessa started crying again.

But this time, she didn't throw herself against Daniel or clutch his arm. She sat down on the couch, covered her face, and made the kind of broken sound that had always worked on him.

“Do you know what it's like,” she whispered, “to live with a man who thinks he can control everything because he's rich?””

Daniel's expression softened slightly.

She noticed.

Of course she noticed.

“Your father has never accepted me,” she continued.

“Every time I suggest something, he treats me like I'm stealing from him. I only wanted to make sure our future was secure.””

“By pretending he attacked you?”” Daniel asked.

“I panicked!””

“You ripped your own blouse!””

“I told you I panicked!””

She stood so quickly that the coffee table shook. Her purse slid to the floor, spilling lipstick, a wallet, tissues, and a small black object that bounced beneath the couch.

Vanessa immediately dropped to her knees.

“Don't touch that!”” she shouted.

Daniel froze.

I watched her scramble to retrieve the object.

“What is it?”” he asked.

“Nothing.””

“Then why are you screaming?””

She snatched it up and shoved it into her purse.

Daniel held out his hand.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“I said no!””

He stared at her as though he had never heard that voice before.

I had.

I had heard it when she demanded copies of my financial statements. I had heard it when she insisted I was obligated to give Daniel the house. And I had heard it when she threatened to make sure I never saw my son again.

I took a slow breath.

“Daniel, the camera caught everything. You don't have to argue with her. Just watch the recording to the end.””

He looked at me.

“Did you know she was planning this?””

“No.””

“Did you touch her at any point?””

“No.””

He lowered his eyes to the tablet.

The recording showed Vanessa walking toward the coffee table. She opened her purse, took out the small black object, and placed it in her right hand.

Then she turned her body slightly away from the camera.

For a second, the object disappeared behind her hip.

But the camera mounted in the hallway captured her reflection in the large mirror beside the entrance.

Daniel tapped the screen.

“Wait. Go back.””

I rewound it.

He leaned closer.

“That's a phone,” he said.

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

The object wasn't a weapon. It was a second phone, an older black smartphone with a cracked corner.

Daniel stared at it.

“Why do you have another phone?””

She shook her head.

“It's an old one.””

“Then why did you hide it?””

“I didn't hide it!””

“You just told me not to touch it!””

“Because it's mine!””

Daniel stood and held out his hand again.

“Unlock it.””

Vanessa took a step backward.

“Absolutely not.””

“Then tell me what you were doing with it.””

“I don't have to show you every private thing I own!””

“No,” he said, his voice suddenly quiet.

“But you do have to explain why you were reaching into your purse while you were pretending Dad had attacked you.””

Her face twisted.

“Pretending? You think I'd do something like that?””

Daniel didn't answer.

She pointed at me.

“He has manipulated you! He's been waiting for a chance to turn you against me!””

I almost laughed at the absurdity of it, but my cheek hurt too much.

“Vanessa, I didn't know you had a second phone until thirty seconds ago.””

“You're lying!””

“I've never even seen it before.””

She turned back to Daniel.

“You're going to believe a man who just admitted he doesn't want us to have the house?””

“I admitted I wouldn't give it to you,” I corrected.

“That's not the same thing.””

Daniel raised a hand.

“Both of you, stop.””

His voice cracked on the final word.

I saw him looking from his wife to the tablet, struggling to reconcile the woman he had married with the woman on the screen.

I understood that struggle. He had invested three years in their marriage. He had defended her against relatives who called her demanding. He had dismissed my concerns as the complaints of an aging father who couldn't accept that his son had grown up.

Believing the recording meant admitting that his judgment had been wrong.

It meant admitting that he had hit his own father because he hadn't bothered to ask a single question.

Vanessa knew exactly where his doubts were coming from.

She walked toward him slowly.

“Daniel, baby, look at me.””

He didn't move.

“I love you,” she whispered.

“I have never loved anyone the way I love you. Your father has spent years making me feel like an outsider. Today, I lost control.

I was angry, and I did something stupid. But I would never deliberately destroy our marriage.””

Daniel's eyes lifted.

“Then unlock the phone.””

She stopped.

The silence lasted several seconds.

Finally, she reached into her purse and pulled out the second phone.

Her hands shook as she entered a passcode.

Daniel took it from her.

The home screen appeared.

There were no personal photographs, no social media applications, and almost no ordinary apps. It looked as though the phone had been used for one purpose and then kept hidden.

He opened the messages.

The first conversation contained a number without a name.

The most recent message had been sent that morning.

*Make sure the old man is alone. Get him angry if you have to. Once Daniel sees the scene, he'll do what you want.*

Daniel read it twice.

Then he scrolled upward.

Another message appeared.

*Don't forget the house papers. If he refuses, make the accusation serious enough that he can't fight back.*

Daniel's fingers went numb.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Who sent these?””

She lunged for the phone.

He stepped away.

“Give it back!””

“Who sent them?””

“It's not what you think!””

“WHO SENT THEM?””

She burst into tears.

“I was talking to someone about our problems! That's all!””

“Someone who told you to frame my father?””

“He doesn't understand our situation!””

“Who?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Daniel continued scrolling.

There were messages about my house, my bank accounts, and the documents I had refused to sign.

One message mentioned a plan to have me declared incapable of managing my affairs.

Another suggested that if I resisted, the family could use the accusation of assault to pressure me into a settlement.

I watched my son's face grow paler with every line.

Then he reached a message sent three days earlier.

*If he won't sign voluntarily, we need another way to make him leave. Once the house is under your control, everything becomes easier.*

Daniel lowered the phone.

His voice was barely audible.

“You were going to take Dad's house.””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No! I was trying to protect our future!””

“By getting him arrested?””

“I didn't say I wanted him arrested!””

“You wrote that the accusation needed to be serious enough that he couldn't fight back!””

She grabbed his wrist.

“Daniel, listen to me. I was angry. I never expected you to hit him.

I thought you'd just force him to leave. I didn't know you'd actually—”

She stopped.

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly looked down at her hand wrapped around his wrist.

Then he looked at the tablet.

“You thought I'd force him to leave?””

Vanessa released him.

Her eyes darted toward the front door.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the man she had manipulated into defending her might no longer be willing to protect her.

Daniel took a step toward her.

“Tell me who you're talking to.””

She backed away.

“I can't.””

“Why not?””

“Because you don't understand what he'll do!””

The words came out before she could stop them.

Daniel's expression changed.

“Who is he, Vanessa?””

She stared at the second phone in his hand.

May you like

Then she whispered five words that made the blood drain from my face.

“Your father knows him, too.””
