Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Entire Scheme

The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet.

People around us laughed.

Silverware clinked against plates.

A waiter walked past carrying glasses of wine.

And yet all I could hear was Harrison’s breathing.

“Sloan transferred the house?””

He nodded slowly.

“I don’t understand.””

For the first time since this nightmare began, Harrison looked as lost as I felt.

“She told me we were buying it together.””

I watched him.

“You never checked?””

His face tightened.

“I trusted her.””

The irony almost made me laugh.

He trusted the woman who helped destroy my life.

And I trusted the son who helped her.

Two people who believed trust was something they could use.

My attorney immediately began investigating the Savannah property.

The results came back the next day.

Sloan had not just transferred ownership.

She had moved the house into a private company.

A company registered under a name that meant nothing to Harrison.

But everything to my attorney.

“Who owns the company?”” I asked.

He looked at the paperwork.

“The controlling member is Sloan Bennett.””

“And Harrison?””

“Nothing.””

I stared at the page.

She had removed him.

After using him.

After convincing him to betray his own mother.

She discarded him.

A small part of me wanted to feel satisfied.

But I couldn’t.

Because Harrison was still my son.

A broken person who helped break me.

That evening, Harrison came to my house again.

This time, he didn’t knock confidently.

He stood outside like a stranger.

“I need your help.””

I looked at him through the glass door.

Months ago, I would have opened it immediately.

Not anymore.

“What happened?””

He looked embarrassed.

“Sloan left.””

I opened the door slightly.

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“And?””

“She took money.””

I stared at him.

“How much?””

He looked down.

“Almost everything from our joint account.””

I was quiet.

Then I said:

“Now you know how it feels.””

His face crumpled.

“I deserve that.””

I didn’t answer.

Because maybe he did.

But I also knew pain did not need to multiply.

“Why are you here?””

He wiped his eyes.

“Because I finally understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That she was never trying to build a life with me.””

He looked at the floor.

“She was trying to use me.””

I leaned against the door.

“And you were trying to use me.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

That was the first honest thing he had said in a long time.

Then he reached into his jacket.

“I found this.””

He handed me an envelope.

“What is it?””

“I don’t know.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a letter.

The handwriting was familiar.

Robert’s.

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

Another secret.

I began reading.

“Margaret, if you are holding this, then my greatest fear has come true.””

My hands shook.

Robert knew.

He knew something was wrong.

The letter continued.

“I discovered that someone close to us has been manipulating Harrison for years.””

I looked at my son.

He looked terrified.

I kept reading.

“The person behind this believes Harrison is weak enough to control.””

My breathing stopped.

Then came the final paragraph.

“I left evidence hidden because I knew confronting them directly would put you at risk.””

I turned the page.

There was only one sentence left.

A sentence that changed everything.

“The person you should fear most is not the one taking your money.””

I stared at the words.

“The one you should fear is the person who wants you to lose your family.””

My hands went cold.

Because beneath that sentence was one final clue.

A name.

Not Sloan.

Not Thomas.

Not Harrison.

Someone else.

Someone who had been quietly watching my family fall apart.

Someone who had been close enough to know every weakness.

And when I saw the name, I realized Robert had known the truth before all of us.

The mastermind was someone I had welcomed into my home for years.
