Chapter 12: The Woman Who Wanted My Life

The name on the screen belonged to someone I never expected.

Caroline Whitmore.

Thomas’s younger sister.

I stared at the name.

“Why would she want to hurt us?””

My attorney opened another file.

“Because fifteen years ago, Robert was involved in a legal case connected to her family.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember.””

“You wouldn’t.””

He placed a document in front of me.

“Robert handled a lawsuit involving financial fraud. Caroline’s husband was accused of stealing from clients.””

I read the page.

Her husband had lost everything.

Their home.

Their business.

Their reputation.

“And Robert was the attorney?””

“No.””

I looked up.

“Then why blame him?””

“Because Robert testified.””

I understood.

Caroline believed my husband destroyed her family.

My attorney continued.

“She spent years trying to damage his reputation.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Caroline had been sitting at our dinner table.

Smiling.

Pretending.

“How did she get close to us?””

My attorney answered quietly.

“Through Thomas.””

Of course.

Thomas.

Her brother.

The man who handled Robert’s estate.

The man who had access to everything.

The pieces finally connected.

Caroline didn’t want money.

Money was only the tool.

She wanted revenge.

She wanted Robert’s family destroyed.

And she knew exactly how.

Use Harrison.

Use Sloan.

Use Evelyn.

Then watch us tear each other apart.

That evening, Harrison came over.

I showed him the photograph.

His face changed.

“I know her.””

My stomach tightened.

“How?””

“She came to the house when I was in college.””

“When?””

“After Dad and I had an argument.””

I looked at him.

“What did she say?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“She told me Dad didn’t appreciate me.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

“How old were you?””

“Twenty-one.””

Twenty-one.

Young.

Confused.

Easy to influence.

“She stayed in contact with you?””

“Sometimes.””

My voice became quiet.

“How often?””

He swallowed.

“Over the years.””

I sat back.

“All this time.””

Harrison covered his face.

“I didn’t know.””

“I believe you.””

And that surprised him.

Because for the first time in months, I wasn’t only seeing his mistakes.

I was seeing the person behind them.

A person who had been manipulated.

But also a person who had made choices.

The next morning, we found Caroline.

She was living two hours away in a small house outside Atlanta.

My attorney advised against confronting her alone.

But I needed answers.

When she opened the door, she looked exactly like I remembered.

Elegant.

Calm.

Controlled.

She smiled.

“Margaret.””

I froze.

“You knew I would come.””

“Eventually.””

She stepped aside.

“Come in.””

The house was filled with photographs.

Most were old.

But one caught my attention.

A picture of Robert.

My blood ran cold.

“You kept that?””

She smiled.

“He was a fascinating man.””

I stared at her.

“You destroyed my family.””

Her expression didn’t change.

“No.””

She poured herself tea.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

I felt anger rise.

“You manipulated my son.””

“I showed him the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That his father left everything to you and nothing to him.””

“That’s not true.””

She laughed softly.

“Isn’t it?””

I stared.

She leaned forward.

“Robert always chose you.””

There it was.

The real wound.

Not money.

Not property.

Jealousy.

“He loved me.””

“Yes.””

Her eyes hardened.

“And that was the problem.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You blamed me because my husband loved me?””

“I blamed Robert because he ruined my life.””

“So you decided to ruin mine?””

She smiled.

Not the nervous smile of Sloan.

Not the guilty smile of Evelyn.

A smile from someone who believed she had already won.

“I didn’t ruin your life, Margaret.””

She stood.

“I revealed what was already there.””

“What?””

“Your son’s greed. Your friend’s weakness. Your daughter-in-law’s ambition.””

She walked closer.

“I only gave them opportunities.””

My hands clenched.

“You planned all of it.””

She didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“Why admit that?””

She looked at me.

“Because you’re too late.””

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?””

She picked up a folder from the table.

“You should ask your attorney about the final transfer.””

I stared at her.

“What final transfer?””

Her smile returned.

“The one Robert accidentally helped me create.””

I felt the room spin.

“Robert?””

She opened the folder.

Inside was a document.

A document bearing my husband’s signature.

And below it was a clause I had never seen.

A clause that could change everything.

Caroline whispered:

“Your husband didn’t leave you the house.””

I looked at the paper.

“Then who did he leave it to?””

She smiled.

May you like

And said the one thing I never expected.

“Me.””
