Chapter 9: The Man Who Closed The Case

The name was Robert Vale.

Detective Harris knew it before Lydia even finished speaking.

And the moment she heard it, her expression changed.

“You’re sure?””

Lydia nodded.

“I’ll never forget his face.””

Detective Harris looked uncomfortable.

“Robert Vale was one of the senior investigators assigned to your case.””

Lydia laughed quietly.

A painful sound.

“Assigned.””

She repeated the word.

“He was supposed to help me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she looked at my daughter.

“He told me I was destroying my own life.””

My daughter looked horrified.

“What did he say?””

Lydia stared at the floor.

“He said powerful families don’t lose.””

I felt my hands tighten.

Detective Harris walked toward the computer.

“Where is he now?””

Daniel checked.

“Retired.””

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

Lydia shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“He doesn’t retire.””

“What does that mean?””

“He disappears.””

She pointed at the screen.

“He gets involved when someone needs to disappear.””

The room felt smaller.

Detective Harris immediately called someone.

While she waited, my daughter looked at Lydia.

“Why did you come here?””

Lydia looked at her.

“Because I saw your story.””

“How?””

“Someone sent me the hospital news.””

My daughter frowned.

“What news?””

Lydia hesitated.

“The first article.””

“There was already an article?””

“Yes.””

I turned.

“Before we even spoke to reporters?””

Lydia nodded.

“Someone wanted your name public.””

Detective Harris ended the call.

Her expression was serious.

“Robert Vale cannot be found.””

“What do you mean?””

“No current address.””

“No phone.””

“No records after retirement.””

I looked at her.

“People don’t disappear from official records.””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Not usually.””

My daughter looked frightened.

“Mom.””

I sat beside her.

“I’m here.””

“What if they come back?””

I looked at her.

“They will.””

She froze.

Because I didn’t say it to scare her.

I said it because I knew.

People like this rarely stop after losing control.

They escalate.

And I was right.

Because five minutes later, every phone in the room received the same alert.

Emergency notification.

Unknown access detected.

Daniel checked the computer.

His face went pale.

“They’re inside the system again.””

Detective Harris moved closer.

“What are they accessing?””

Daniel typed quickly.

Then stopped.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked at us.

“They’re not accessing records.””

“Then what?””

He turned the screen.

A live camera feed appeared.

The hospital hallway outside my daughter’s room.

My heart stopped.

Because on the screen was my daughter’s husband.

Standing outside.

Not alone.

Beside him was Robert Vale.

The man who was supposed to be retired.

The man who had disappeared.

The man who had buried Lydia’s truth years ago.

My daughter covered her mouth.

“He found me.””

Detective Harris grabbed her radio.

“All units to observation wing.””

But before anyone moved, the camera feed changed.

Another angle.

Inside the hospital room.

Our room.

A camera we didn’t know existed.

And on the screen, I saw myself.

Standing beside my daughter.

Watching.

Listening.

Someone had been watching us the entire time.

Then my daughter’s husband looked directly into the hallway camera.

As if he knew we were watching.

And he smiled.

The screen went black.

A message appeared.

Three words.

*LET HER GO.*

My daughter started shaking.

Not from fear this time.

From anger.

Because she finally understood.

They weren’t trying to hide anymore.

They were challenging us.

Detective Harris looked at me.

“What do we do?””

I stared at the dark screen.

Then at my daughter.

The little girl I once promised nothing would ever reach.

I stood.

“Now?””

I walked toward the door.

“Now we make sure they regret letting us find the truth.””

But before I opened it, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Colonel.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from today.

Not from the hospital.

From twenty-six years ago.

A voice I never expected to hear again.

“You need to stop digging.””

I looked at my daughter.

Then I whispered:

“Who is this?””

May you like

The man answered.

“The person who knows what really happened to your daughter’s father.””
