Chapter 14: The Last Name On The List

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Robert Vale stood in front of us like a ghost from a life I thought was finished.

But ghosts were easier to understand.

They belonged to the past.

Robert didn’t.

He was standing in front of me.

Alive.

Watching.

“You let us believe you were gone.””

He looked down.

“I needed them to believe that.””

“You destroyed lives.””

His expression tightened.

“I saved some.””

Lydia stepped forward.

“You ruined mine.””

Robert looked at her.

And for the first time, his confidence disappeared.

“I know.””

Her voice shook.

“Do you?””

She walked closer.

“Do you know what it feels like when everyone believes you’re lying?””

Robert looked away.

“Yes.””

That answer surprised everyone.

“Because I lived with it too.””

Detective Harris held the file.

“Explain the name.””

Robert looked at the page.

Then at me.

“You finally found it.””

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he said:

“The Carter family was never the entire operation.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who was above them?””

Robert looked at Detective Harris.

“You already know.””

She went silent.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Robert nodded.

“The person who controlled investigations.””

Detective Harris stepped back.

“Impossible.””

“Not impossible.””

He looked at her.

“Just uncomfortable.””

I watched her expression.

Because she understood.

The person on the list wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone she trusted.

Robert continued.

“They didn’t need to control everyone.””

He looked at me.

“Only the people who controlled information.””

I looked at the file.

“Why show me now?””

“Because they’re moving.””

“What does that mean?””

“They’re trying to erase everything.””

Lydia looked around.

“They know this building exists?””

“They own the property.””

Detective Harris looked shocked.

“How?””

Robert smiled sadly.

“Money.””

The oldest weapon.

The easiest weapon.

I looked at him.

“You could have stopped this years ago.””

“Yes.””

He didn’t deny it.

That surprised me.

“You admit it?””

“I failed.””

The words came quietly.

“I was afraid.””

Lydia stared at him.

“You watched them destroy people.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

“No.””

Robert looked at her.

“I hid evidence.””

He opened his coat.

Pulled out a small drive.

“I collected everything.””

Detective Harris took it.

“What is this?””

“Every file they tried to erase.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why keep it?””

“Because one day, someone brave enough would come looking.””

A noise came from outside.

Cars.

Multiple vehicles.

Robert’s face changed.

“They’re here.””

Detective Harris moved toward the window.

“Police?””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

The lights outside appeared.

Black vehicles.

No markings.

Lydia whispered:

“The cleaners.””

Robert looked at me.

“You need to leave.””

I didn’t move.

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“They will destroy this building.””

“Then we stop them.””

Robert looked at me.

“You still haven’t changed.””

“Neither have you.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Maybe that’s why we both survived.””

The door downstairs exploded open.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Organized.

Detective Harris grabbed the drive.

“We need to move.””

We ran through the back hallway.

But before we reached the exit, Robert stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“There’s something else.””

I stared.

“What?””

He looked almost guilty.

“Thomas.””

My heart stopped.

“What about him?””

Robert lowered his voice.

“He didn’t disappear because they found him.””

“Then why?””

“Because he went looking for the person who betrayed you.””

I froze.

“Who?””

Robert looked toward the approaching footsteps.

Then answered:

“The person who ordered the attack on your daughter.””

A shadow moved at the end of the hallway.

May you like

Robert whispered:

“And that person is already inside this building.””
