Chapter 1: The Secret in the Backpack
The phone kept ringing.
Nobody in that emergency room moved.
I stood between my wife and my eight-year-old daughter, holding a folded piece of paper that had turned my entire world upside down.
My wife's handwriting was unmistakable.
Make sure she finishes everything before Marcus gets home.
And on the phone screen, beneath the name of Dr. Daniel Reed, was a message that made my blood run cold.
Did Maya take the last dose? We can't let Marcus discover why she's really getting sick.
"Claire," I whispered.
"Tell me what this means.""
My wife stared at the phone.
For nine years, I'd believed I knew everything about her. I'd trusted her with our finances, our home, and, most importantly, our daughter.
Now she was looking at me like a stranger caught doing something she couldn't explain.
"Marcus, give me the phone.""
"No.""
"You're misunderstanding something.""
"Then explain it.""
She glanced toward Maya.
Our little girl was curled up on the hospital bed, clutching Nurse Nia's hand. Her cheeks were wet, and her breathing came in short, frightened bursts.
"Mommy?"" Maya whispered.
Claire immediately softened her voice.
"Sweetheart, everything is fine. Daddy is just confused.""
Maya shook her head.
"Please don't make me go home.""
Those seven words hurt more than anything I'd read on that phone.
Nurse Nia stepped between Claire and the bed.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need you to step outside.""
"You can't keep me away from my daughter!""
"I'm not keeping you away. I'm making sure she feels safe enough to speak.""
Claire pointed at me.
"Marcus, tell her this is ridiculous.""
I didn't answer.
For the first time in our marriage, I wasn't sure which version of my wife I was supposed to believe.
A doctor entered a moment later.
He introduced himself as Dr. Patel and began examining Maya. He asked about the pain, her appetite, her medications, and whether she'd eaten anything unusual.
Claire answered every question before Maya could open her mouth.
"She's been anxious lately," Claire said.
"She barely eats breakfast. I think she's exaggerating the pain.""
Dr. Patel looked at her.
"Mrs. Bennett, I'd like to hear from Maya directly.""
Claire folded her arms.
"She's eight. She doesn't understand medical questions.""
"Then I'll ask simple ones.""
He pulled a stool beside the bed.
"Maya, sweetheart, have you been taking anything that Daddy doesn't know about?""
Maya's eyes moved toward her mother.
Claire's fingers tightened around her handbag.
"She's confused," she said.
Dr. Patel didn't look away from Maya.
"You won't be in trouble for telling me the truth.""
My daughter swallowed.
"Mommy gives me something after dinner.""
"What does it look like?""
"A little white cup. Sometimes it tastes like oranges.""
Claire suddenly stepped forward.
"That's her vitamin supplement!""
Nia looked at her.
"Then you won't mind telling us its name.""
Claire hesitated.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Dr. Patel asked Nia to preserve the backpack and its contents. He also requested that Maya be evaluated immediately and that nothing from the container be administered until the medical team identified it.
I watched him place the small plastic container inside a clear evidence bag.
"Was this prescribed?"" he asked Claire.
"It's just something a doctor recommended.""
"Which doctor?""
She didn't answer.
I pulled the folded note from my pocket.
"Was it Daniel Reed?""
Claire's face changed.
"Don't bring Daniel into this.""
I stared at her.
"His name is on the phone. His messages are in our daughter's backpack. His name is on something that apparently has been making her sick. How exactly am I supposed to leave him out?""
"Marcus, please. Not here.""
"Where, Claire? At home? Where Maya is too frightened to speak?""
My daughter began crying again.
I immediately sat beside her.
"Hey, sweetheart. Look at me.""
She reached for my hand.
"Are you angry with Mommy?""
I looked at Claire, then back at my daughter.
"I'm worried about you. That's all that matters right now.""
Maya hesitated.
Then she whispered something that made my heart stop.
"Mommy said if I told you about the medicine, you would send me away.""
I felt something inside me break.
"Send you away?""
Maya nodded.
"She said Daddy doesn't want a sick little girl.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Listen carefully. You could be sick every single day for the rest of your life, and I'd still choose you. Every single time.""
She wrapped both arms around my neck.
Behind me, Claire started sobbing.
But when I turned around, she wasn't looking at Maya.
She was looking at the phone.
It had stopped ringing.
A new message appeared.
Claire, answer me. I know Marcus is at the hospital.
Then another.
If he has the container, we have a serious problem.
I read the messages twice.
And then a third appeared.
Don't tell him about the original agreement.
I slowly raised my eyes toward my wife.
"What agreement?""
Claire's lips parted.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
May you like
"Marcus, you need to understand why I did this.""
And suddenly, I wasn't sure I wanted to hear her answer.
