Chapter 12: The Evidence Hidden In Plain Sight

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

But by then, the damage was already done.

Ethan’s father was gone.

The recorder was gone.

And the only evidence proving everything existed had disappeared.

At least, that was what everyone thought.

I sat in my father’s old office, staring at the empty space where the recorder had been.

My hands felt numb.

Victor sat across from me.

“We need to assume he has the recording.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus pointed at the metal box.

“He never wanted the recorder.””

Victor frowned.

“Then why take it?””

“Because he wanted us to believe he took the evidence.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What are you saying?””

He walked toward the old desk.

“Your father was not careless.””

He opened a drawer.

Then another.

Nothing.

Finally, he tapped the wood.

A hollow sound answered.

“There.””

Victor helped him remove the hidden panel.

Inside was another compartment.

My heart raced.

Inside was a small device.

Not a recorder.

A hard drive.

And a note.

My name.

Again.

I picked it up.

Claire, if you found this, they found the first layer.

I swallowed.

My father had planned for this.

Never trust the evidence people can steal.

I looked at Victor.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Your father knew people would chase documents.””

I continued reading.

The truth was never stored in one place.

Below the message was a password.

Six words.

Words I recognized immediately.

The sentence my father always told me when I was young.

“Family is built on honesty.””

My fingers shook as I typed it.

The hard drive opened.

Folders appeared.

Thousands of files.

Financial records.

Private communications.

Audio recordings.

And one folder labeled:

*ETHAN CARTER*

Everyone went quiet.

I stared at the name.

Victor looked at me.

“Do you want to open it?””

I nodded.

The first file appeared.

A recorded conversation.

Date:

Three months before my mother died.

I pressed play.

Ethan’s voice filled the room.

“I don’t want to do this.””

My heart stopped.

Another voice answered.

His father.

“You don’t have a choice.””

Ethan sounded younger.

Scared.

“What if Claire finds out?””

His father replied:

“Then make sure she doesn’t.””

The recording continued.

“We need her signature.””

Ethan said nothing.

Then his father spoke again.

“Once the shares transfer, she becomes irrelevant.””

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already knew.

Even though I had heard enough.

I kept listening.

Because I needed the truth.

Then came the sentence that destroyed the last piece of hope I had.

Ethan whispered:

“I love her.””

A pause.

His father laughed.

“Love is why you’re weak.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at the screen.

Because buried inside betrayal was something complicated.

Ethan had been involved.

He had lied.

He had hurt me.

But he had also been afraid.

And fear did not make him innocent.

It only explained him.

Victor looked at the files.

“We can take this to the board.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not yet.””

“Why?””

Marcus pointed at the screen.

“Because there is one more file.””

I looked.

At the bottom of the folder.

A final document.

Created one week ago.

After the gala.

After the plan was exposed.

The title appeared.

*Emergency Transfer Protocol.*

I opened it.

The first line made my blood freeze.

If Claire Carter discovers the truth, control must immediately be transferred to the secondary beneficiary.

I frowned.

“Secondary beneficiary?””

Victor leaned closer.

Then his face changed.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed at the name.

The name listed as the person who would receive control if I was removed.

My heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t Ethan.

It wasn’t Lauren.

It wasn’t his father.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping me all night.

Someone standing in the room.

May you like

Victor whispered:

“The secondary beneficiary is Marcus Vale.””
