Chapter 11: The Real Person Behind The Plan

Nobody moved.

The man behind Lauren stepped into the room.

He was older.

Well-dressed.

Calm.

Too calm.

The kind of person who didn’t need to raise his voice because everyone already feared him.

Ethan looked at him.

And his face changed.

“Dad.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

Ethan’s father.

The man everyone said had retired years ago.

The man who supposedly had nothing to do with Carter International anymore.

He smiled.

“Hello, son.””

Ethan looked horrified.

“You’re supposed to be in Europe.””

“I was.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“Until my son started making mistakes.””

My stomach twisted.

“You planned this?””

The older man looked at me.

“Claire Carter.””

He said my name like he was meeting an opponent.

“Your father always believed you were smarter than people gave you credit for.””

I stepped forward.

“You forged my signature.””

He smiled.

“I created an opportunity.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You tried to steal my company.””

He laughed softly.

“Your company?””

He looked around the old office.

“Your father built this place with ambition. But ambition without strength is weakness.””

Victor stepped forward.

“You manipulated Ethan.””

The man looked amused.

“Manipulated?””

He glanced at his son.

“I taught him.””

Ethan looked disgusted.

“I trusted you.””

His father smiled.

“And that was your mistake.””

Something changed in Ethan’s face.

Pain.

Real pain.

For the first time, I saw him as someone who had also been trapped.

But then I remembered the bracelet.

The documents.

The slap.

The betrayal.

Pain did not erase choices.

“You used him,” I said.

The older man looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You needed someone close to Claire.””

His eyes moved toward Lauren.

“And Lauren was useful.””

Lauren looked uncomfortable.

“You said I would become powerful.””

He ignored her.

“You were always easy to convince.””

Her expression changed.

She finally understood.

She had never been the partner.

Only the tool.

Ethan stepped toward his father.

“Where are the original files?””

His father smiled.

“Still thinking like a businessman.””

“You threatened my wife.””

The older man looked at him.

“Your wife?””

The mockery in his voice was obvious.

“You were supposed to remove her.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“No.””

The room froze.

His father looked surprised.

“No?””

Ethan shook his head.

“I never wanted her destroyed.””

I stared at him.

The words should have meant something.

But they came too late.

His father laughed.

“That is why you failed.””

The man holding the gun moved slightly.

Victor noticed.

So did Marcus.

Marcus quietly stepped closer to me.

The older man continued.

“Claire, your father made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He thought loyalty mattered more than power.””

I held the recorder.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“He made one mistake.””

The man raised an eyebrow.

“He trusted the wrong people.””

Silence.

Then I pressed a button on the recorder.

The recording continued.

My father’s voice filled the room again.

But this time, it wasn’t the warning.

It was the part after.

“If anyone is confronting Claire while she hears this…”

Everyone froze.

My father continued:

“It means they believe they have already won.””

The older man’s smile disappeared.

Because he recognized what came next.

“And that means Claire needs to know the final protection I left behind.””

Victor leaned closer.

“What protection?””

The recording crackled.

Then my father said:

“The company was never protected by the shares.””

A pause.

“It was protected by the evidence.””

The older man stepped forward.

“Turn that off.””

I smiled slightly.

“No.””

My father continued.

“Claire, if they come for you, do not fight them with money.””

The recording played one final sentence.

“Expose what they did.””

The room went silent.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

A crash came from the hallway.

Someone screamed.

When the emergency lights turned on…

May you like

The recorder was gone.

And so was Ethan’s father.
