Chapter 2: The Threat She Couldn't Take Back

“Officer, you may want to turn that thing off,” Margaret said.

Brady didn't move.

“It's department equipment, ma'am.””

“I understand what it is.”” She straightened her coat and smoothed an imaginary wrinkle from the sleeve.

“I'm simply asking for a little professional courtesy.””

“Recording policies aren't optional,” Brady replied.

Margaret gave him a thin smile.

“Neither is knowing who you're dealing with.””

I stepped farther into the hallway, blocking her view of Sophie.

“Margaret, this is an active police matter. You need to step back.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Claire, I know you're upset. Sophie has always been dramatic, and tonight she's clearly not thinking rationally.””

“She's injured.””

“She has a history of emotional instability.””

“Then you won't mind waiting while paramedics examine her.””

Margaret's lawyer, a silver-haired man with a red tie, opened his briefcase.

“My name is Richard Cole. We're here on behalf of the Whitaker family. We have documentation indicating Mrs. Whitaker's daughter-in-law may be a danger to herself and others.””

He handed me a thick folder.

I didn't take it.

“You can provide that documentation to the watch commander.””

Cole's smile remained professionally blank.

“We're trying to resolve this without unnecessary embarrassment.””

“An injured woman ran into a police station asking for protection. The embarrassment isn't mine to manage.””

Behind me, Sophie made a small, broken sound.

Margaret heard it.

“You see?”” she said, pointing toward the office.

“This is exactly what I mean. She gets herself worked up, starts making accusations, and then everyone has to clean up the mess.””

I turned toward her.

“Don't point at her.””

Margaret lowered her hand slowly.

For years, I had watched this woman control family gatherings with little more than a raised eyebrow. She could make my husband apologize for things he hadn't done. She could turn a birthday dinner into a courtroom and every relative into a reluctant witness.

She had never needed to shout.

She simply made people understand that displeasing her would cost them something.

Now she leaned closer to me.

“Think about your husband before you turn this into something.””

I felt the words land like a slap.

“What does my husband have to do with this?””

Her gaze flickered toward the envelope.

“Everything, Claire.””

The second attorney stepped forward. He was younger than Cole, with a blue tie and an expensive watch.

“I'm Andrew Price,” he said.

“Before anyone makes further allegations, you should review this petition.””

He placed several pages on the counter.

The first page requested an emergency court order for Sophie to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. The attached statement described her as violent, unstable, and increasingly paranoid.

According to the document, she had attacked David during an argument and then fled the house while suffering from a mental health crisis.

I scanned the signatures.

David Whitaker.

Under the statement was another signature, written in the same confident hand.

My husband's.

Daniel Whitaker.

The words beneath it were unmistakable.

*Witnessed in person.*

I read the line again.

Daniel was a respected emergency physician. He was the man who brought me coffee when I worked double shifts, who kissed my forehead before leaving for the hospital, who had once driven four hours in a snowstorm because I'd mentioned missing my father.

He was also the man who had spent the evening telling me he was covering an overnight shift.

I looked at Margaret.

“When did Daniel witness this?””

“Earlier tonight,” she replied.

“Where?””

“David's residence.””

My stomach tightened.

“Daniel told me he was at the hospital.””

“Perhaps you should ask your husband why he wasn't entirely truthful with you.””

The implication was deliberate.

She wanted me angry enough to forget that Sophie was injured. She wanted me distracted by my marriage.

I pushed the petition back toward Price.

“This doesn't authorize anyone to remove Sophie from the station.””

“We're aware,” Price said.

“But the court has been provided with information suggesting she may need immediate intervention.””

“Then let a judge determine that. She'll receive medical care, and we'll take statements.””

Margaret laughed softly.

“Statements? You think you can investigate your own family?””

“I've already requested the watch commander.””

“That's not what I asked.””

I held her gaze.

“I'm removing myself from the investigation because of the family connection. That doesn't mean I'm going to ignore an assault in front of me.””

“You always were stubborn,” she said.

“Daniel should have married someone who understood loyalty.””

Brady shifted beside us.

“Ma'am, I need you to lower your voice.””

Margaret ignored him.

She leaned around my shoulder and addressed Sophie directly.

“Listen carefully. If you walk out of here with those papers, David will lose his job, Daniel will lose his reputation, and every person in this family will know you destroyed them. Do you understand me?””

Sophie gripped the doorframe.

“You destroyed them yourself,” she whispered.

Margaret's face changed.

“You ungrateful little—”

Cole caught her arm again.

“Margaret. Stop.””

She twisted toward him.

“Don't touch me.””

“You're on camera,” he hissed.

“And?””

“And you just threatened a witness in a police station.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Margaret turned to me, her voice suddenly gentle.

“Claire, sweetheart. This is a family disagreement. You know how Daniel worries about his mother. He won't thank you for making him choose sides.””

I looked at the camera above my office door.

Then at Brady's body camera.

“I'm not asking Daniel to choose anything,” I said.

“I'm asking why his name is on a sworn statement claiming he witnessed an event he told me he wasn't present for.””

Price closed his briefcase.

“That's a matter between you and your husband.””

“Not if the statement was fabricated.””

Margaret's smile disappeared.

The paramedics arrived, and I escorted Sophie back into my office while Brady summoned the watch commander. A female paramedic named Elena knelt beside Sophie and began examining the bruising around her eye.

“I need to check your ribs,” Elena said gently.

“Can you tell me if anything hurts when you breathe?””

“Everything hurts.””

“Okay. We'll take this slowly.””

Sophie stared at the envelope on my desk.

“Claire, don't let them take it.””

“I won't let anyone interfere with the evidence.””

“It's not just evidence.””

I crouched beside her.

“What else is it?””

She reached for my hand.

“There's a name inside that Margaret has spent twenty years trying to erase.””

Before I could ask whose name she meant, the front doors opened again.

A familiar figure stepped inside carrying a pair of women's shoes.

My husband had arrived.

Daniel looked directly at Sophie.

Then he looked at the envelope.

His face lost every trace of color.

And the first words out of his mouth were not an explanation.

May you like

They were a warning.

“Claire, whatever Sophie told you, don't open that envelope.””
