Chapter 12: Daniel's Final Bargain
I lunged toward Daniel, but Richard caught my arm.
“Sarah, wait.””
“Where are the children?”” I shouted.
Daniel lowered his phone just enough to watch my reaction.
“Relax. They're not hurt.””
“You put your hands on those children, and I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison.””
“Big words from someone who broke into a warehouse to meet a dead man.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Leave them out of this.””
Daniel tilted his head.
“You're in no position to give orders, Richard. You've been dead for twelve years. Legally, you don't even exist.””
My father said nothing.
Daniel looked at me.
“Here's how this works. You hand over the blue box, you sign a document relinquishing your authority over Emily's estate, and you stop cooperating with the investigator.””
“And then you release the children?””
“Of course.””
I stared at him.
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No. I expect you to understand the consequences of refusing.””
He held up the phone again.
Lily was crying. Ethan sat beside her, gripping her hand.
I fought to keep my voice steady.
“Lily, sweetheart, can you hear me?””
Daniel turned the screen away.
“Don't talk to them.””
“You have no right to keep them from their family.””
“I'm their father.””
“And Emily was their mother. You couldn't respect her when she was alive, and now you're using her children as bargaining chips.””
His face hardened.
“Your sister made a lot of mistakes.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“Don't you dare talk about her.””
“She trusted the wrong people. She trusted you. She trusted her mother. She even trusted me.””
“You betrayed her.””
“I made decisions to protect myself.””
“From what?””
Daniel's smile faded.
For the first time, he looked genuinely exhausted.
“From Adrian Cole.””
Richard stared at him.
“You were working with him.””
“I was paying him off.””
“With Emily's money?””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Your father started the arrangement. He moved money through Adrian's company, then disappeared when things went wrong. Adrian came to me years later and told me the debt hadn't been settled.””
Richard shook his head.
“I never owed him what he claimed.””
“Tell that to the documents he showed me.””
“What documents?””
“Contracts, bank statements, signed authorizations. Enough to convince me that if I refused to cooperate, I'd lose everything.””
I stepped closer.
“So you stole $340,000 from Emily's company to pay him?””
Daniel looked at me.
“At first, it was supposed to be temporary. I would repay it once the estate was settled.””
“That's why you wanted the house transferred into your name.””
“Yes.””
The admission came so easily that it frightened me.
“And the medication?””
He looked away.
“Adrian told me Emily's condition was deteriorating faster than expected. He said the additional medication was necessary to manage her symptoms.””
“Did you know what he was giving her?””
“I knew what was written on the care plan.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“I didn't want her to suffer.””
“Did you deliberately change her medication?””
He didn't answer.
Richard stepped closer.
“Daniel, look at me. Did you change her medication?””
Daniel's eyes filled with anger.
“I signed the authorization Margaret gave us. I followed the instructions Adrian provided. I never intended for Emily to die that way.””
My stomach twisted.
“You knew the schedule had changed.””
“I knew she needed more pain relief.””
“You knew she was becoming confused.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was frightened.””
Daniel looked down.
For one brief moment, I saw something resembling shame.
Then it disappeared.
“Adrian told me everything was medically appropriate. He said if I questioned the treatment, Emily would suffer more.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to believe him.””
The distinction was devastating.
I thought of Emily alone in her bedroom, calling Daniel while he stayed at hotels with Vanessa. I thought of her trying to understand why her medication made her feel different. I thought of the letter she'd written to me, knowing that the people around her might never admit what they'd done.
I took a breath.
“Where is Adrian now?””
Daniel glanced toward the warehouse entrance.
“He's leaving the country tonight.””
Richard swore under his breath.
“Then why are you here?””
“Because he told me to destroy the evidence before he goes.””
Daniel looked at the blue case.
“I'm supposed to take that box and deliver it to him.””
I tightened my grip.
“Then you're not getting it.””
His expression changed.
“You don't understand. He has people who can make your life miserable. He knows where your mother is. He knows where the children are.””
“And you helped him find them.””
Daniel said nothing.
I looked toward the shadows beyond the loading area.
“Michael?””
Daniel spun around.
Two officers emerged from behind a stack of old pallets.
Michael followed them, holding a recording device.
“Mr. Parker,” he said, “you're under arrest on suspicion of extortion, unlawful restraint, and financial crimes. Additional allegations may follow as the evidence is examined.””
Daniel's face drained of color.
“You can't arrest me. You don't have proof.””
Michael held up his phone.
“We have your statements, the threats you sent, the video you showed Sarah, and the recordings from this meeting.””
Daniel stared at me.
“You set me up.””
“No,” I replied.
“You did that yourself.””
One officer took Daniel's phone while the other secured his hands.
As they led him toward the exit, he twisted around.
“You think this ends with me? Adrian will destroy you. He has copies of everything.””
Michael didn't answer.
Daniel's gaze shifted toward Richard.
“And you,” he spat.
“You should have stayed dead.””
My father stood motionless.
When Daniel disappeared through the warehouse doors, I finally released the breath I'd been holding.
“Where are Lily and Ethan?”” I asked.
Michael checked his phone.
“The officers located them less than a mile away. They were left in a parked vehicle near a gas station. They're frightened, but they're safe and being taken to a protected location.””
My knees nearly gave way.
I closed my eyes and whispered a prayer of gratitude.
Then I turned toward Richard.
He looked older than he had when I'd first seen him, his shoulders slumped beneath his coat.
“Are you coming home?”” I asked.
He swallowed.
“If you'll let me.””
I wanted to say yes.
I wanted to embrace him and pretend the twelve missing years could somehow be recovered.
But Emily's face rose in my mind.
She had died without knowing whether her father was truly alive. She had fought alone to uncover a truth he had been too afraid to confront.
“I don't know if I can forgive you,” I said.
He nodded.
“I understand.””
“But I need you to tell the investigators everything. No more hiding. No more false names. No more protecting yourself at our expense.””
“I will.””
Michael approached us.
“There's one more problem.””
I turned.
“What now?””
He held up a phone recovered from Daniel.
“We found a message from Adrian Cole sent less than ten minutes ago.””
“What did it say?””
Michael read it aloud.
Daniel is expendable. If Sarah has the original records, she must never reach the hospital archive.
I stared at him.
“Why the hospital archive?””
Michael's expression grew grim.
“Because we've just confirmed that Emily's official medication records were altered after her death.””
He showed me the next message.
It contained a photograph of a locked cabinet in a hospital records room.
Beneath it was a short instruction.
*Remove the original chart before the independent review begins.*
Then Michael looked directly at me.
“Sarah, if those original records still exist, they may be the only evidence that can establish what actually happened to your sister.””
I looked at the blue case in my hands.
Daniel had been arrested.
My father had returned from the dead.
And the man who might hold the final answers was still out there, preparing to erase the last trace of what he'd done.
I had spent weeks trying to understand how my sister died.
Now I finally knew where the truth was waiting.

And according to Adrian Cole's message, someone was already on the way to destroy it.
