Chapter 14: The Final Gift My Father Left Behind
We drove to my mother's house before sunrise.
Dad insisted on coming with us, despite his exhaustion.
He had spent twenty-four years hiding, and now every movement seemed to cost him more strength than he wanted to admit.
Mom placed both bracelets on the kitchen table.
They looked identical.
Same gold links.
Same small diamond clasp.
Same delicate engraving.
But when I examined them closely, I noticed something.
The bracelet from the broken wedding gift had a tiny inscription beneath the clasp.
*For the woman who tells the truth.*
The second bracelet had different words.
*For the woman who steals it.*
I looked at my father.
“What does this mean?””
He smiled sadly.
“Your grandmother made those bracelets. She knew the Bennett family had secrets long before any of us did.””
He picked up the second bracelet.
“Inside this clasp is a tiny compartment. Your grandmother used to hide messages in her jewelry.””
I carefully pressed the clasp.
A small metal panel opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper.
My fingers trembled as I unfolded it.
It contained an address and a handwritten sentence.
The truth is beneath the place where Daniel first taught Marcus to fish.
I immediately recognized the location.
The old cabin.
Lake Lanier.
Mom looked at Dad.
“You put the evidence there?””
He nodded.
“The most important evidence. The original recordings and the documents proving Richard arranged the accident.””
“Why didn't you retrieve them?”” I asked.
“Because Richard controlled the property records. Every time I tried to get close, someone was waiting.””
Rebecca entered the kitchen carrying a small bag.
She had stayed at Patricia's house after escaping the medical facility.
“I know where the hiding place is,” she said.
I turned toward her.
“How?””
“Because I helped Daniel build it.””
Dad smiled.
“Your aunt was the only person who knew about the compartment beneath the fishing platform.””
I looked at the clock.
6:17 a.m.
“Then we're going now.””
Dad shook his head.
“No. Richard will be expecting that.””
He pulled out his phone.
“First, we need to make sure he can't destroy the evidence.””
He dialed a number.
“Agent Miller? This is Daniel Bennett. I need to speak with you about the Cole investigation.””
I froze.
“Who is Agent Miller?””
Dad covered the phone.
“An investigator I contacted several months ago. I gave him copies of some financial records, but not the originals.””
He waited.
Then his expression changed.
“What do you mean you received another report?””
He listened.
“From whom?””
A long silence followed.
Then Dad lowered the phone.
“Richard has filed a complaint accusing Elaine of stealing company funds.””
Mom sank into a chair.
“He's already framing me.””
Dad nodded.
“He's trying to get ahead of us.””
I looked at the documents.
“Can we prove they're fake?””
“Yes. But we need the original records.””
My phone rang.
Vanessa.
I stared at the screen.
Mom looked at me.
“Answer it.””
I stepped outside.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was trembling.
“Marcus, please don't hang up.””
“You've got thirty seconds.””
“I found the original email Richard sent to my mother. It contains instructions for the entire plan.””
“Why are you giving it to me?””
“Because I'm done protecting him.””
I laughed without humor.
“You should have made that decision before you married me.””
“I know.””
There was a pause.
Then she said, “Richard is coming to your mother's house.””
My stomach tightened.
“How do you know?””
“Because he called me. He said if you don't surrender the ledger, he'll have Elaine arrested.””
I looked through the kitchen window.
Mom was speaking with Dad.
“Why would he tell you?””
“Because he thinks I'm still on his side.””
I remained silent.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
“Marcus, I have the original wedding video.””
“What?””
“The videographer recorded everything. Including a conversation Richard had with Margaret before the reception.””
My pulse quickened.
“What did he say?””
“He told her to watch your mother. He said if Elaine opened the wrong bracelet, everything would be over.””
I looked at the second bracelet in my hand.
“Which bracelet?””
“The one with the hidden compartment. Richard believed it contained the original key to the trust.””
I glanced toward the kitchen.
My father had gone completely still.
“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered, “there's something else. Margaret wasn't supposed to be at the wedding as your mother's impersonator.””
“Then why was she there?””
“Because Richard wanted to replace your mother before the ceremony. He planned to have Margaret sign a document as Elaine, transferring control of the family company.””
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“Where is Margaret now?””
“I don't know. But I have her number.””
Before I could respond, a car pulled into the driveway.
A black SUV.
Richard stepped out.
Two men followed him.
I rushed inside.
“Dad! He's here!””
My father looked through the window.
For the first time since I'd found him, he looked frightened.
“Everyone stay back.””
Richard knocked.
Three slow knocks.
Then his voice came through the door.
“Daniel, open up. We need to finish this.””
Dad walked toward the entrance.
I grabbed his arm.
“Don't.””
He looked at me.
“Son, I spent twenty-four years running from this man. I'm not running anymore.””
He opened the door.
Richard stood on the porch holding a leather briefcase.
He smiled when he saw Dad.
“Good morning, old friend.””
Dad stared at him.
“It's over, Richard.””
Richard opened his briefcase.
Inside were several official-looking documents.
“No, Daniel. It's just beginning.””
He placed one document on the table.
It was an arrest warrant.
My mother's name was printed across the top.
*ELAINE BENNETT — FINANCIAL FRAUD AND THEFT.*
Richard smiled at me.
“You have one hour to surrender the ledger.””
May you like
Then he leaned closer.
“Or your mother goes to prison for crimes I committed.””
