Chapter 2: The Photograph That Shouldn't Exist

Nobody spoke.
The music was still playing somewhere behind us. A violinist, unaware of the nightmare unfolding on the terrace, continued performing beneath the chandeliers.
Nathaniel stared at the photograph.
"Mother, what does this mean?""
Eleanor pressed the picture against her chest.
"Not here.""
Victoria let out a bitter laugh.
"Oh, this is ridiculous.""
Nathaniel turned toward her.
"You're going to be quiet now.""
Her eyes flashed.
"You can't talk to me like that.""
"I'm looking at footage of you pushing my mother over a building, Victoria. You don't get to tell me how to speak.""
Victoria glanced at the guests.
"Everyone here knows what your mother is like. She's been confused for months. She forgets conversations. She invents stories.""
Eleanor slowly lifted her head.
"Then explain why you knew Grace Carter's name.""
Victoria's jaw tightened.
"Because you wouldn't stop talking about her!""
"That's a lie," Eleanor replied.
"You knew because you found the records.""
Nathaniel stepped between them.
"What records?""
Victoria looked at him, and for one second, the carefully polished bride disappeared.
There was something desperate beneath her makeup.
"Ask your mother why she kept a second birth certificate locked in her bedroom.""
Nathaniel went still.
Eleanor closed her eyes.
"Victoria, don't.""
"Why not?"" Victoria snapped.
"You've spent years pretending to be the perfect mother. Perhaps everyone deserves to know what kind of woman you really are.""
I looked down at the photograph.
My mother looked so young.
She was wearing a pale blue hospital gown, her dark hair falling over one shoulder. She looked exhausted, but happy.
I had only two photographs of Grace growing up. One was taken at my fifth birthday party. The other was the photograph on her funeral program.
She had died when I was twelve.
At least, that was what I had been told.
I looked at Eleanor.
"Did you know my mother?""
Eleanor nodded.
"She was my closest friend.""
"Then why did I grow up believing she was dead?""
Eleanor's mouth trembled.
"Because I failed her.""
A cold silence settled over us.
Nathaniel crouched beside his mother.
"Tell us what happened.""
"Your father, Richard, was a cruel man when it came to protecting the family name," Eleanor said.
"He believed blood was more important than love. And he believed the Callaway fortune belonged to a perfect heir.""
Nathaniel shook his head.
"My father has been dead for six years.""
"His secrets aren't.""
She took another breath.
"Grace worked at our estate when we were young. She wasn't just an employee. She was my friend. She was the only person who stood beside me when Richard became unbearable.""
I swallowed.
"Was she pregnant?""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Yes.""
"With me?""
"That's what we told you.""
The sentence struck harder than a slap.
Nathaniel's voice dropped.
"What do you mean, 'what we told you'?""
Eleanor looked between us.
"The night you were born, two babies arrived at the same private hospital. One was delivered at 2:14 in the morning. The other arrived minutes later.""
She pointed to the photograph.
"Grace and I were in that hospital together.""
Nathaniel rubbed his forehead.
"I don't understand.""
"You will.""
Victoria suddenly stepped forward.
"She's manipulating you.""
Marcus moved to block her.
"Ma'am, please stay where you are.""
Victoria ignored him.
"Think about it, Nathaniel. Your mother has been hiding this for years. Why would you believe her now?""
"Because I just watched you try to kill her," he replied.
Victoria's face twisted.
"You think that video tells the whole story?""
Nathaniel rose.
"It shows you pushing her.""
"Then ask her why she kept me around for three years," Victoria said.
"Ask her why she let me into this family when she knew what I had discovered.""
Eleanor looked pale.
"Because I hoped you would choose love over money.""
Victoria laughed.
"Love? You offered me money to leave him!""
Nathaniel stared at her.
"You told me your father had gambling debts. You said you needed help.""
"I did need help.""
"You asked for twelve million dollars.""
"And you gave it to me.""
The guests began whispering.
Nathaniel's face hardened.
"Where did that money go?""
Victoria said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer to Nathaniel.
"Sir, should we contact the police?""
"Yes. And nobody leaves until they arrive.""
Victoria's eyes darted between the guards.
"You're making a mistake.""
Nathaniel held up the tablet.
"The footage is clear.""
"Not all of it.""
"What does that mean?""
Victoria looked directly at me.
"Ask Rose how much her mother told her before she died.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"She never told me anything.""
"Exactly.""
Victoria smiled without warmth.
"Then perhaps you should ask why there was a second fire report.""
Nathaniel turned toward Marcus.
"Find every record connected to Grace Carter.""
Marcus nodded and walked away.
Eleanor caught my hand again.
"Rose, listen to me. Your mother left something behind. Something she wanted you to have when you were old enough.""
"What?""
"A key.""
She reached into the lining of her handbag and pulled out a small envelope. My name was written across the front in handwriting I recognized immediately.
My knees weakened.
It was my mother's handwriting.
I took the envelope with shaking fingers.
Inside was a brass key and a short note.
Rose, if Eleanor ever gives you this, it means they have found us.
I read it twice.
Then I noticed the date.
The letter had been written three days before the house fire.
"How did you get this?"" I whispered.
Eleanor looked away.
"Grace gave it to me the night she disappeared.""
"Disappeared?""
I looked at the funeral photograph in my mind. The closed casket. The black dress. The neighbors who had whispered about the fire.
My mother had supposedly been found inside our burning house.
But nobody had ever let me see her body.
I turned back to Eleanor.
"You said she didn't die in the fire. Where is she?""
Eleanor began to cry.
"I don't know.""
Victoria suddenly lunged toward the envelope.
"Give me that!""
Marcus caught her arm.
She fought him, her wedding dress dragging across the terrace.
"LET GO!""
Nathaniel watched her.
"Why are you so afraid of that key?""
Victoria stopped struggling.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely terrified.
May you like
Then she whispered something that made Eleanor cover her mouth.
"Because that key opens the room where Grace Carter gave birth to Nathaniel.""
