Chapter 11: What My Father Left Behind

The storage facility stood behind a row of industrial buildings in Stamford.

It was an ordinary place.

Gray metal doors. Security cameras. A small reception desk with a bell.

But the moment I stepped inside, I felt as though I were walking toward the most important room of my life.

Richard showed his identification and explained that we were investigating possible unauthorized access to a private vault.

The manager, a nervous man named Peterson, checked the computer.

"Unit 417," he said.

"The account was established eighteen years ago.""

"Who accessed it this morning?"" Richard asked.

Peterson looked at the screen.

"A woman named Margaret Carter.""

My mother's maiden name.

I gripped the counter.

"What time?""

"Eight forty-three.""

"Did she take anything?""

Peterson hesitated.

"She entered with a key. She remained inside for approximately eleven minutes.""

"Was she alone?""

"No.""

Richard leaned forward.

"Who accompanied her?""

Peterson enlarged the security footage.

A man appeared beside my mother.

He wore a dark coat and a baseball cap.

I couldn't see his face.

But I recognized his posture.

Daniel.

My stomach dropped.

"He found her.""

Richard immediately requested a copy of the footage.

"Did they leave together?"" he asked.

Peterson nodded.

"They used separate vehicles.""

I looked at the monitor.

My mother had been here.

She was alive.

And Daniel knew where she was.

"Open the vault," I said.

Peterson hesitated.

"Mrs. Blackwood, I need to verify the authorization.""

Richard presented the original trust documents and explained that I was the designated beneficiary.

After several minutes, Peterson agreed to escort us.

The vault was at the end of a narrow corridor.

Unit 417 had a heavy steel door.

I took the small silver key from my handbag.

My father's key.

It fit.

The lock turned with a metallic click.

Inside was a room barely larger than a walk-in closet.

There were three metal cabinets, several cardboard boxes, and a small wooden desk.

Dust covered almost everything.

Except one drawer.

It had been opened recently.

Richard examined the room.

"Don't touch anything unnecessarily.""

I moved toward the desk.

A photograph stood beneath a glass paperweight.

It showed my father holding me as a little girl.

My mother stood beside us.

Behind them was Charles Blackwood.

I turned the photograph over.

My father's handwriting appeared on the back.

For Olivia. When the truth becomes more valuable than silence.

My eyes filled with tears.

I opened the first cabinet.

Inside were financial statements, company registrations, and correspondence between my father and Charles Blackwood.

Richard began reviewing the documents.

"These are substantial records.""

"What do they prove?""

"Potentially, that your father had documented unauthorized transfers from several Blackwood companies.""

He lifted a folder.

"This is particularly important.""

I looked over his shoulder.

It contained records from the year my father died.

One company had received millions in transfers from a Blackwood subsidiary.

The company was registered under a woman's name.

Margaret Carter.

My mother.

"Why would my mother own this company?""

Richard examined the registration.

"She may have been used as a nominee shareholder.""

I shook my head.

"She would never knowingly help someone steal money.""

"Then perhaps she didn't know.""

I opened another cabinet.

Inside was a small cassette recorder and several envelopes.

One envelope had my name written across it.

I opened it carefully.

The letter was dated three weeks before my father's death.

My darling Olivia,

If you are reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. I want you to know that your mother and I love you more than anything in this world.

There are people who believe money gives them the right to control others. Charles Blackwood is one of them.

I discovered that he has been manipulating his sons, his business partners, and the people who work for him.

But the most dangerous thing I discovered concerns the original family trust.

Your mother and I were not simply witnesses to its creation. We were part of the agreement.

One day, you may become the person who can stop the Blackwoods from destroying themselves.

Do not trust anyone who tells you that your worth depends on what you can give them.

Love, Dad.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

For the first time since learning about my mother's survival, I cried.

Richard gave me a moment.

Then he found another document.

"Olivia, I think you should see this.""

It was a copy of the original Blackwood trust.

But unlike the version we had seen in his office, this one contained an additional page.

A handwritten amendment.

It stated that the forty-two percent beneficial interest would transfer to me automatically upon my thirtieth birthday, provided I had not knowingly participated in any fraudulent arrangement involving the Blackwood family.

I was thirty-two.

The transfer should already have happened.

"Why didn't I receive anything?""

Richard studied the page.

"Because the trust administrators filed a notice of disputed identity.""

"What does that mean?""

"Someone claimed that the beneficiary was not the biological daughter of Michael Carter.""

I stared at him.

"Who?""

He turned the page.

The objection had been filed by Daniel Blackwood.

My stomach tightened.

"Why would Daniel question my identity?""

Richard looked at the supporting evidence.

"Because someone submitted a birth record suggesting that you were adopted.""

I felt my breath catch.

"What?""

He handed me the document.

It contained a hospital record from thirty-two years earlier.

My name.

My date of birth.

My mother's name.

But the father's name was blank.

Below it was a note.

Paternity unconfirmed.

I looked at Richard.

"Is this real?""

"I don't know. We need the original hospital records.""

Then I heard footsteps outside.

Richard immediately closed the folder.

"Did you hear that?""

I nodded.

A shadow moved beneath the door.

Someone tried the handle.

Locked.

Then a voice spoke from the corridor.

"Olivia? It's me.""

I froze.

It was my mother.

Richard opened the door.

She stood there wearing a dark blue coat, her hair shorter than I remembered, and her face thinner.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Then she stepped forward.

"My baby.""

I ran into her arms.

She held me so tightly that I could barely breathe.

I cried against her shoulder.

"Why didn't you come back?""

She kissed my forehead.

"I wanted to. Every day.""

I pulled away.

"Daniel was here this morning.""

Her face changed.

"Did he take anything?""

"Only the documents in the open drawer.""

She closed her eyes.

"Then he has the copy of the agreement.""

"What agreement?""

My mother looked at Richard.

Then at me.

"The agreement that explains why your father was willing to risk everything to protect you.""

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded document.

It was an original hospital birth record.

This time, the father's name was clearly written.

I read it.

Then read it again.

My father wasn't Michael Carter.

The name on the document was Charles Blackwood.

I looked at my mother.

She began crying.

"Olivia, there's something your father never wanted you to discover.""

I could barely speak.

"Who is my biological father?""

May you like

My mother took my hands.

"Charles Blackwood.""
