Chapter 11: The Woman Who Had Been Living in Hiding
I left Richard in the custody of my security team and drove toward Westchester.
Detective Harris had given me the address of a private residential facility.
It was an old estate surrounded by tall trees and iron gates.
A place designed to look peaceful.
But the moment I stepped inside, I felt something was wrong.
A receptionist approached me.
"Mr. Caruso?""
"Where is my wife?""
"She's in the medical wing. The police are speaking with her.""
I walked past her.
At the end of the corridor, a detective stood beside a closed door.
He turned when he saw me.
"Dominic?""
"Where is she?""
He studied my face.
"Before you go in, I need you to understand something. Your wife has been living under a different identity.""
I stopped.
"Why?""
"She was admitted here eight months ago under an emergency protective order.""
"Who signed it?""
The detective looked at his paperwork.
"Victoria Caruso.""
My jaw tightened.
"She had my wife declared mentally incompetent?""
"That's what the documents indicate.""
I looked through the small glass window.
A woman sat beside the bed.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was thinner.
But I knew her.
Isabella.
My wife.
I opened the door.
She looked up.
For one second, neither of us moved.
Then she stood.
"Dominic?""
I couldn't speak.
I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around her.
She buried her face against my chest.
And I cried.
Not quietly.
Not like the controlled businessman who never showed weakness in front of employees.
I cried like the man who had spent eight months grieving a woman who was standing alive in his arms.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I held her tighter.
"No. Don't apologize.""
"I should have found a way to reach you.""
"You were alive.""
She nodded.
"I was.""
I pulled back and held her face.
"Why didn't you come home?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because they told me you'd signed the documents.""
"What documents?""
"The guardianship agreement. The medical authorization. Everything.""
I shook my head.
"I didn't know what I was signing.""
"I know that now.""
She looked toward the detective.
"Is it true? Did you find the girls?""
I nodded.
"Maisie and Rosie are safe. Emma is at the medical facility.""
Isabella covered her mouth.
"Emma?""
"She's alive.""
A sob escaped her.
"Thank God.""
I took her hands.
"She's waiting for you.""
Isabella began crying harder.
Then she asked the question I had been afraid to hear.
"Does she know who I am?""
I hesitated.
"She knows you're her mother.""
Isabella closed her eyes.
"I need to see her.""
"You will.""
I sat beside her.
"Tell me everything.""
She took a breath.
"When I delivered the girls, I knew something was wrong. The doctors kept separating them. They told me Emma needed additional testing.""
"Why didn't they tell me?""
"Your mother was controlling every conversation. She had arranged for Dr. Reed to handle my medical care.""
"And Richard?""
Isabella nodded.
"He was there too.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What did he want?""
"The foundation.""
She reached toward the bedside table and removed a small notebook.
"I found something in your father's old files. The foundation wasn't just a financial investment. It owned the patents for several medical treatments. Your father had arranged for the ownership to pass to his grandchildren.""
I nodded.
"I've seen the trust.""
"Then you know about the hereditary marker.""
"Yes.""
Isabella looked at me.
"There's something they haven't told you.""
"What?""
"The marker isn't exclusive to your father.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She opened the notebook.
Inside was a handwritten family tree.
My father's name appeared at the top.
Below it were two branches.
One led to me.
The other led to a woman named Evelyn Hale.
I stared at the name.
"Who is Evelyn?""
Isabella swallowed.
"Richard Hale's late wife.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"Your father had a daughter with her before he married Victoria.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Margaret?""
Isabella nodded.
"Margaret was your father's daughter, but she wasn't his only child outside his marriage.""
I stared at the family tree.
"Then who was Evelyn's daughter?""
Isabella pointed to another name.
*SOPHIA HALE.*
I didn't recognize it.
"Who is Sophia?""
"Richard's daughter.""
I shook my head.
"How does she fit into this?""
Isabella's voice dropped.
"She's the person Richard wanted to make the primary beneficiary.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because she carries the same genetic marker as your daughters.""
I stood.
"Richard wanted his own daughter to inherit the foundation?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did he need Emma?""
Isabella looked toward the window.
"Because Emma was the first child whose medical records confirmed the inheritance condition. Richard wanted her removed from the trust before the other girls were registered.""
I felt sick.
"And my mother helped him?""
Isabella nodded.
"Victoria believed she would receive control of the foundation in exchange.""
I walked toward the window.
Everything was becoming clear.
My mother wanted the money.
Richard wanted the controlling interest.
And my wife had become the obstacle.
I turned back.
"Why did they keep you here?""
Isabella looked down at her hands.
"Because I had the original trust amendment.""
She reached beneath her pillow and removed a folded document.
I opened it.
My father's signature was at the bottom.
But there was something unusual.
A handwritten sentence:
In the event that any beneficiary is concealed, all authority transfers to the surviving parent.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at Isabella.
"Why didn't you give this to the police?""
"I tried.""
She looked toward the door.
"Someone intercepted my first letter.""
"Who?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"The person who brought me here.""
The detective stepped forward.
"Mrs. Caruso, are you saying a member of this facility's staff was involved?""
Isabella nodded.
"Yes.""
"Who?""
She looked directly at me.
Then she said:
"The man who has been pretending to be your father's lawyer for the last eight years.""
My blood ran cold.
"Richard?""
"No.""
She shook her head.
"Your father's attorney. The man who prepared the original trust.""
I stared at her.
"His name is?""
Isabella opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the detective's radio crackled.
A voice came through.
"Detective Harris, we have a problem.""
"What?""
"Richard Hale has been released.""
I turned sharply.
"Released? How?""
The voice continued.
"Someone presented a court order. It appears to be signed by the family attorney.""
The detective looked at me.
Then Isabella grabbed my wrist.
"Dominic, we have to get to the girls.""
I frowned.
"Why?""
Her voice broke.
"Because the attorney isn't just helping Richard.""
May you like
She leaned closer.
"He's the person who arranged my disappearance.""
