Chapter 4: The Twelve-Million-Dollar Secret

For several seconds, nobody in the conference room moved.

The bank statement lay between Michael and Richard Whitmore.

Twelve million dollars.

A loan secured by an agreement transferring intellectual property that Richard had no legal authority to transfer.

I looked at the chairman.

"Mr. Whitmore, would you care to explain why my father's invention was used as collateral for your personal loan?""

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

"That's a confidential financial matter.""

Michael shook his head.

"Not anymore. The agreement identifies Mr. Carter as the patent owner, yet his signature appears to have been forged. If the loan was issued based on this document, your company may have a significant legal problem.""

Alexander pushed his chair backward.

"That's ridiculous. My father wouldn't risk the company over some old garage invention.""

I turned toward him.

"Some old garage invention?""

He looked at me.

"That's what it is. A design from a small repair shop. You can't seriously expect us to believe it's worth thirty-eight million dollars.""

I opened another folder.

"Then perhaps you should look at the independent testing results.""

I slid a technical report across the table.

The document contained results from twelve months of laboratory testing. The cooling system had reduced critical battery temperatures by thirty-seven percent during extreme-load conditions.

It also demonstrated a substantial reduction in thermal runaway propagation.

One of the executives, a woman named Margaret Ellis, picked it up.

She was Whitmore's chief technology officer.

Her eyes widened.

"These results are impressive.""

"They're independently verified," I answered.

Margaret turned another page.

"Who conducted the validation?""

"My engineering team, working with an independent testing laboratory.""

She looked at Richard.

"Sir, why weren't these results included in our preliminary assessment?""

Richard cleared his throat.

"Because we were still evaluating the technology.""

Margaret frowned.

"That's not what the report says. It indicates that the testing was completed three months ago.""

Alexander interrupted.

"Can we stop pretending this is a legitimate negotiation? Olivia has already developed a similar system.""

I looked at Olivia.

She had been silent since the bank statement appeared.

"Dr. Parker," I said, "you've repeatedly claimed ownership of this technology. Can you explain how you developed the cooling-channel design?""

She swallowed.

"I developed it during my doctoral research.""

"Without access to my father's notebooks?""

Her eyes moved toward Alexander.

"I never said that.""

The room became completely silent.

Michael leaned forward.

"That's an interesting distinction. We have evidence that you accessed Mr. Carter's father's engineering notebooks during your research period.""

Olivia shook her head.

"Daniel gave me permission to study his father's work.""

"To study it," I replied.

"Not to claim ownership.""

Her voice became louder.

"You were my partner! We shared everything!""

"Did we share my father's patent rights?""

She didn't answer.

Margaret closed the technical report.

"Richard, I think we need to suspend this meeting until our legal department investigates.""

Richard slammed his palm against the table.

"Absolutely not.""

Everyone looked at him.

"We have a licensing agreement worth thirty-eight million dollars under negotiation. We are not walking away because of an ownership dispute.""

Michael remained calm.

"Then we have another matter to discuss.""

He placed a second document in front of Richard.

It was a formal notice of disputed intellectual property ownership.

"Mr. Carter is prepared to seek an immediate injunction preventing any further use, transfer, or commercialization of the patented technology.""

Richard stared at the paper.

Alexander suddenly stood.

"Father, do something!""

Richard didn't respond.

I collected my documents.

"I believe we're finished here.""

But before I could stand, Richard spoke.

"Mr. Carter, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because there are things you don't understand about this situation.""

"Then explain them.""

He glanced at Olivia.

She looked down at the table.

Richard lowered his voice.

"Your father's technology was never supposed to become a problem for this company.""

I froze.

"What does that mean?""

He hesitated.

Then Michael quietly said, "Daniel, don't answer anything else without counsel.""

Richard ignored him.

"Your father approached us years ago. He wanted investment. We considered acquiring the technology, but he refused our terms.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"My father never mentioned Whitmore Technologies.""

"He wasn't interested in selling.""

"Then how did you get his designs?""

Richard looked toward Olivia.

She began trembling.

I slowly turned toward her.

"Did you give him the notebooks?""

She covered her mouth.

Alexander grabbed her arm.

"Olivia, tell him!""

She pulled away.

"I didn't know what they were going to do!""

Richard stood.

"That's enough.""

But I was already looking at the chairman.

"How long have you known?""

He said nothing.

Michael gathered the documents.

"We'll let the courts determine that.""

As we reached the door, Margaret approached me.

"Mr. Carter, may I speak with you?""

I stopped.

She glanced toward Richard before lowering her voice.

"There is something you should know about the original patent application.""

"What?""

Margaret hesitated.

"Your father submitted additional documentation to our company nearly twelve years ago. I was working in research administration at the time.""

My stomach tightened.

"What happened to it?""

She looked toward the conference room.

"Richard Whitmore personally ordered that the files be removed from our internal archive.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

May you like

Margaret's answer was barely audible.

"Because your father discovered someone had already attempted to steal his invention.""
