Chapter 13: The Inheritance That Could Destroy My Family

"Which one of you will decide what happens to Adrian?""

My mother's question hung in the basement.

I looked at her.

"What does that mean?""

Elena wiped her tears and reached for the document Thomas had given Adrian.

"Your grandfather knew Vincent might eventually discover Adrian's biological identity. He also knew that Vincent would try to use him against the family.""

Adrian stared at the paper.

"So Grandfather created another trust?""

Thomas nodded.

"Not exactly. He created a condition.""

He pointed to the final paragraph.

I read it aloud.

"Upon the death or legal disqualification of Vincent Kane, the surviving heirs Isabella and Victoria shall jointly determine the future ownership of Kane Holdings and the legal status of Adrian Kane.""

I looked up.

"Why would Adrian's status be part of our inheritance?""

Thomas took a painful breath.

"Because Vincent's biological son was never supposed to inherit the company.""

Adrian laughed bitterly.

"So after twenty-five years of believing I was a Kane, I'm suddenly nobody?""

Elena grabbed his hand.

"You're my son. Nothing on a piece of paper changes that.""

"But it changes everything else.""

He stood and walked toward the basement window.

I understood his anger.

He had spent his entire life trying to become someone his family could be proud of.

He had built an empire, protected people, and carried responsibilities that no seventeen-year-old should have inherited.

Now he was being told that the man he'd called his uncle was actually his father.

And that the family business he controlled might never have belonged to him.

Victoria approached him.

"Adrian.""

He didn't turn.

"I'm sorry.""

"For what?""

"For being part of this.""

He finally faced her.

"You were a child. So was I.""

Victoria started crying.

"Vincent told me you were dangerous. He said you wanted to take everything from me.""

Adrian shook his head.

"I spent ten years looking for Isabella. I never knew you existed.""

I walked between them.

"We've all lost enough time.""

Thomas reached for my hand.

"There's something else you should know.""

He pointed toward the envelope.

"Your grandfather left a separate recording. It can only be opened with the two birth certificates and the original trust.""

Marco retrieved the documents from the upstairs study.

We placed everything on a small table.

The laptop displayed a video file.

Thomas pressed play.

Charles Kane appeared.

His face was pale, and his voice was weaker than in the previous recording.

"If this message is being viewed, then Vincent has failed to keep my granddaughters apart.""

He paused.

"I owe both of you an apology.""

Victoria moved closer to the screen.

Charles continued.

"I allowed Vincent to convince me that one granddaughter had to be sacrificed to preserve the family. I was wrong. I believed money could protect children. Instead, I gave a dangerous man the power to destroy their lives.""

He looked directly into the camera.

"The inheritance belongs equally to Isabella and Victoria. Neither of you can sell, transfer, or surrender your shares without the other's consent.""

A new document appeared on the screen.

Then Charles spoke again.

"However, there is one additional condition. The sisters must decide whether Kane Holdings will remain under the family name or be dissolved and distributed among the victims of Vincent's crimes.""

I looked at Victoria.

"Victims?""

Thomas nodded.

"Vincent didn't steal only from the family. He used company money to finance illegal operations, intimidate witnesses, and pay people to disappear.""

Adrian's expression hardened.

"How much?""

"Billions over the years.""

Marco received a call.

He listened, then approached Adrian.

"Sir, the authorities have secured Vincent. But his lawyers are already moving to challenge the arrest.""

Adrian nodded.

"Give them everything.""

Marco hesitated.

"There's a problem. Vincent has requested a private meeting with you.""

"Absolutely not.""

"He says he has information about your biological mother.""

Adrian turned toward Elena.

"You're my biological mother.""

Elena lowered her eyes.

Thomas looked away.

I felt a chill.

"Mom?""

Elena reached for Adrian.

"You're my son, and I love you. But the truth is more complicated.""

Adrian pulled his hand away.

"Just tell me.""

Thomas finally spoke.

"Vincent and Elena were involved before she married me. When she became pregnant with Adrian, Vincent threatened to take him away unless she gave him to another family.""

Adrian stared at them.

"So I was raised by another man?""

Elena nodded.

"Your father, James Kane, adopted you. He knew you weren't his biological son, but he loved you as his own.""

Adrian's eyes filled.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because James begged me to let you have a normal childhood.""

Adrian walked out of the basement.

I followed him into the hallway.

He stopped near the staircase.

"All these years, I've been fighting to protect a family that was built on lies.""

I touched his shoulder.

"You don't have to keep protecting the lies.""

He looked at me.

"What if I don't know who I am without them?""

I smiled sadly.

"Then we'll find out together.""

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he hugged me.

It was the first time he had held me like a brother rather than someone he felt responsible for saving.

And I finally understood something.

The ninety thousand dollars he'd spent on me hadn't given me a new life.

Finding my family had.

But before we could return to the others, Marco appeared at the top of the staircase.

"Mr. Kane, Vincent has escaped.""

Adrian released me.

"How?""

Marco looked toward the entrance.

"His transport vehicle was intercepted. One of the officers was working for him.""

Then he handed Adrian a photograph.

It showed Vincent standing outside a private airfield.

Beside him was a woman.

A woman wearing a black coat.

Elena gasped.

"Margaret.""

But the woman wasn't Margaret.

It was someone else.

Someone whose face I recognized from the hospital photograph.

My grandmother.

May you like

And beneath the photograph was a message:

*BRING BOTH GIRLS TO THE WHITMORE ESTATE. OR YOUR FATHER DIES.*
