Chapter 9: The Person I Never Expected

I stared at the name.

For years, I thought I would never see it again.

*Daniel Foster.*

My former business partner.

The man who disappeared five years earlier after our consulting company closed.

The man who had once been like a brother to me.

Michael noticed my reaction.

“Mom?””

I folded the paper slowly.

“Where did you get this?””

Vanessa answered.

“It was attached to one of the reservation emails.””

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you show this immediately?””

She looked down.

“Because I thought it would prove my point.””

“What point?””

“That you were hiding something.””

I sighed.

“So you kept evidence because you wanted to use it against me.””

Her face fell.

“Yes.””

At least she admitted it.

I looked back at Daniel’s name.

My mind raced.

Daniel knew my company.

He knew my travel benefits.

He knew how payments worked.

But why would he interfere with my son’s vacation?

Michael leaned forward.

“Who is he?””

I looked at my son.

“Someone I trusted.””

The words felt strange.

Because trust was becoming something I questioned more every day.

Five years earlier, Daniel and I had built a successful consulting partnership.

We worked together for almost a decade.

When I received the travel bonus, Daniel was still connected to the company’s old systems.

After the partnership ended, I assumed everything had been closed.

Apparently, I was wrong.

I called the number on the old company directory.

It rang twice.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Hello?””

I froze.

“Daniel?””

Silence.

Then:

“Who is this?””

I almost laughed.

“You know exactly who this is.””

Another pause.

“Where did you get this number?””

I stood up.

“You tell me.””

Michael watched me carefully.

Daniel’s voice changed.

“You shouldn’t be asking questions you don’t want answers to.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What did you do?””

“I didn’t do anything.””

“Someone used information connected to my reservation.””

Silence.

That was enough.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he sighed.

“I was trying to help.””

I couldn’t believe what I heard.

“Help?””

“Yes.””

“By interfering with my son’s vacation?””

“No.””

“By making my daughter-in-law think I was lying?””

Another silence.

Then he said:

“Your daughter-in-law already thought that.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

Daniel continued.

“I saw what was happening.””

“What?””

“Michael was being pressured.””

I frowned.

“By who?””

“By everyone around him.””

That answer made no sense.

“Explain.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“I thought if the truth came out, things would finally change.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What truth?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Finally, he said:

“Your son doesn’t know everything about his wife’s finances.””

Michael looked at me.

He heard that.

“What did he say?””

I ended the call.

Because suddenly, this was no longer about a vacation.

It was about something much bigger.

Vanessa looked frightened.

“What did Daniel mean?””

I looked at her.

“I should ask you the same question.””

She went pale.

Michael stood up.

“What is going on?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“There’s something I never told you.””

Michael stared at her.

“What?””

She looked down.

“I wasn’t honest about the reason we couldn’t afford the vacation.””

The silence was unbearable.

I watched my son’s face.

The same face that looked at me with confusion at the airport.

The same face that wanted to believe everyone was telling the truth.

Then Vanessa said the sentence that changed everything.

“We weren’t struggling because of work.””

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“We were struggling because of a debt I never told you about.””
