Chapter 11: The Man Who Wanted Revenge
The next morning, we flew back to Denver.
Nobody talked much during the flight.
Vanessa sat across the aisle.
Michael stared out the window.
And I sat with a question I couldn’t escape.
Why did Daniel hate me so much?
After we landed, Michael drove us home.
The silence between us was uncomfortable.
Finally, he spoke.
“Mom.””
“Yes?””
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For not seeing what was happening.””
I smiled sadly.
“Michael, you’re not responsible for every choice another person makes.””
“But I should have protected you.””
“You should have asked questions.””
He nodded.
“That’s fair.””
When we arrived, Vanessa immediately went upstairs.
Michael stayed downstairs with me.
“I need to figure out what happens next.””
I nodded.
“Take your time.””
That evening, I opened an old storage box in my office.
I hadn’t looked inside in years.
There were old contracts.
Photos.
Letters.
Memories from the company Daniel and I built.
Then I found something.
A letter.
I recognized Daniel’s handwriting.
The date was five years earlier.
I opened it.
The words made my hands shake.
You took everything from me.
I read the letter again.
Daniel believed I had destroyed his career.
But the truth was different.
Five years earlier, our company lost a major client.
Daniel wanted to hide the losses.
I refused.
I reported the financial problems and closed the partnership.
It saved many people from losing money.
But Daniel blamed me.
He believed I ruined his reputation.
I called Michael into the room.
He read the letter.
“Wow.””
I nodded.
“He’s been holding onto this for years.””
Michael looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because it was my problem.””
He shook his head.
“That’s what you always do.””
“What?””
“Carry everything alone.””
I smiled slightly.
“Maybe.””
That night, Vanessa came downstairs.
She looked different.
Less defensive.
More tired.
“I need to tell you both something.””
Michael looked at her.
“Okay.””
She sat down.
“Daniel didn’t just talk to me once.””
My heart sank.
“How many times?””
“Three.””
Michael stared.
“Three?””
She nodded.
“He kept telling me your mother wasn’t helping us. He said she was making me look weak.””
I looked at her.
“And you believed him?””
She started crying.
“I was already insecure.””
That was the hardest truth.
Manipulation worked because it found something already hurting.
Michael reached for his forehead.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Mrs. Thompson?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Claire. I worked with Daniel Foster.””
I sat straighter.
“How can I help you?””
Her voice lowered.
“I think you need to know what Daniel is planning.””
My heart started racing.
“What do you mean?””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“He isn’t trying to embarrass you.””
“Then what is he trying to do?””
Her answer froze me.
“He’s trying to take control of your company assets.””
I looked at Michael.
The vacation.
The lies.
The reservation changes.
None of it was random.
It was preparation.
May you like
And Claire had one more thing to say.
“He needs your son to believe you can’t be trusted first.””
