Chapter 9

Dust filled the tunnel.

Emergency lights flickered red.

Behind us, the collapsed passage blocked the evidence chamber.

Ahead, the main staircase was damaged but still visible.

Chen tested the metal steps.

“Move.”

One federal agent climbed first.

Then Evelyn.

Then me.

Daniel stayed behind.

I turned.

“What are you doing?”

He stared into the darkness.

“He wants me.”

“So?”

“So maybe this ends if I give him what he wants.”

I climbed back down.

“No.”

“David.”

“I spent twelve years thinking you were dead.”

Another rumble shook the tunnel.

“I’m not doing it again.”

Daniel looked at me.

“You still hate me.”

“I do.”

He almost smiled.

“Good.”

“I also love you.”

His smile disappeared.

“That’s inconvenient.”

“Get upstairs.”

We climbed out.

Outside, police had already surrounded the property.

The explosion had triggered alarms.

Fire crews arrived.

Chen immediately ordered a search for secondary devices.

Evelyn stood in the driveway looking at the house.

Twenty years of hiding had ended in the same place she once begged Mom to protect her daughter.

Then my phone rang.

Hospital.

My heart stopped.

I answered.

“Mr. Bennett, your mother is fine.”

I breathed again.

“But Mrs. Claire Bennett has disappeared.”

“What?”

“She left her room approximately fifteen minutes ago.”

“She was recovering from surgery.”

“We know.”

“How?”

“A nurse found her IV disconnected. Hospital clothing was left in the bathroom.”

Daniel stared at me.

“What?”

I put the call on speaker.

The nurse continued.

“Security footage shows her leaving with a woman.”

“What woman?”

Maria’s voice came through from the background.

“I saw her.”

“Maria?”

“She woke up and asked for Evelyn.”

I looked at the woman standing twenty feet away.

Evelyn Cole.

Claire had asked for her dead mother.

Maria continued.

“Then another woman came.”

“What did she look like?”

“Blonde. Maybe forty. She told the nurse she was Detective Chen.”

Everyone turned toward the real Chen.

Her face hardened.

“Impersonator.”

Maria said, “Claire left with her.”

My stomach twisted.

Kidnapped.

Or escaped?

Evelyn whispered, “I know who took her.”

“Who?”

“My younger sister.”

We all stared at her.

Daniel threw his hands up.

“Of course there’s a sister.”

Evelyn ignored him.

“Rebecca.”

“Why would your sister take Claire?”

“Because Rebecca has worked for Richard since before I disappeared.”

I stared at her.

“Your entire family is insane.”

Evelyn gave a sad nod.

“Yes.”

Chen asked for every detail.

Rebecca Cole had stayed close to Richard after Evelyn’s staged death.

She helped move money.

Create identities.

Pay officials.

And raise Caroline.

Claire.

“She was like a mother to her,” Evelyn said.

“Then why kidnap her?”

“Because Richard will use Rebecca to make Caroline cooperate.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Cooperate with what?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“The final transfer.”

I was tired of riddles.

“What final transfer?”

“The water rights.”

“We already stopped the forged deed.”

“That was only one parcel.”

She looked toward Mom’s house.

“Your family controls the central access point. But five surrounding parcels are held through trusts.”

“Whose trusts?”

“Mine.”

I stared at her.

“You own them?”

“Technically.”

Daniel laughed.

“So Richard needs your signature too.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“He needs Caroline’s.”

“Why?”

“Because legally, I died twenty years ago.”

I understood.

Claire had inherited Evelyn’s hidden assets.

Whether she knew it or not.

Evelyn continued.

“Richard has spent years trying to gain control through Caroline.”

“By making her marry me?”

“No.”

That stopped me.

“Then why did she marry me?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with pain.

“I don’t know.”

I hated the answer.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

Video attachment.

He opened it.

Claire appeared on screen.

She sat inside a vehicle.

Rebecca beside her.

Claire looked pale.

Weak.

But conscious.

Richard’s voice came from off camera.

“Daniel. Bring the black key to the old pumping station.”

The camera moved.

Rebecca held a gun against Claire’s side.

Richard continued.

“David stays away.”

Claire suddenly looked into the camera.

“No.”

Rebecca hit her.

My hands clenched.

Richard laughed.

“One hour.”

The video ended.

Daniel already knew what I would say.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“He wants me, not you.”

“He wants everyone.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“The pumping station connects to the old municipal tunnel.”

Chen looked at her.

“Can he access the contaminated storage site from there?”

“Yes.”

“What happens if he destroys it?”

“The water samples disappear.”

“Federal agents already documented them.”

“Not enough.”

Evelyn looked grim.

“The original sealed samples establish dates and chain of custody tied to your father.”

So Richard wanted both Daniel and the evidence.

Chen began organizing a rescue.

This time Daniel refused to stay behind.

He gave the black key to Chen.

“We make him think I have it.”

I objected.

Daniel ignored me.

“You said you love me.”

“Don’t use that.”

“Then trust me.”

I stared at him.

“You vanished for twelve years.”

“Exactly. I’m very good at disappearing.”

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

The old pumping station sat three miles from the house near a dried reservoir.

Federal teams approached through underground maintenance routes Evelyn remembered.

Daniel drove openly to the front entrance.

I was hidden in the back of the SUV.

He hated it.

I insisted.

Brothers compromise.

Sometimes badly.

Daniel entered the station.

I waited five minutes.

Then followed through a side access door.

The building smelled of oil and rust.

Old pipes ran across the ceiling.

Voices echoed.

I moved quietly.

Richard stood on a metal platform.

Rebecca held Claire near the railing.

Claire looked terrible.

Her hospital gown was hidden beneath a coat.

Bandage visible at her side.

Daniel stood below them.

“Let her go.”

Richard smiled.

“The key.”

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Held up a black piece of metal.

Fake.

Richard narrowed his eyes.

“Bring it.”

Daniel climbed the stairs.

Rebecca pressed the gun harder against Claire.

Then Claire saw me.

Her eyes widened.

I put a finger to my lips.

She looked away.

Good.

Daniel reached the platform.

Richard grabbed the fake key.

He stared at it.

Then laughed.

“This isn’t it.”

Daniel punched him.

Everything exploded into motion.

Rebecca raised the gun.

Claire drove her elbow backward.

The shot fired into the ceiling.

I ran.

Richard tackled Daniel into the railing.

Rebecca grabbed Claire by her injured side.

Claire screamed.

I hit Rebecca from behind.

The gun fell.

Claire kicked it away.

Daniel punched Richard.

Richard answered with a metal wrench.

Daniel collapsed.

“Daniel!”

I rushed toward him.

Richard grabbed Claire.

A knife appeared in his hand.

He pressed it against her throat.

“Stop.”

I froze.

Claire’s face was wet with tears.

Richard looked at me.

“You really did love him.”

“What?”

He nodded toward Daniel.

“Your brother.”

Daniel groaned.

Richard smiled.

“That was always your weakness.”

I stared at him.

“You don’t know me.”

“I watched your family for twenty years.”

“You watched us because Dad beat you.”

Richard’s expression changed.

There.

A wound.

I continued.

“He found what you were doing.”

“Your father was naive.”

“He was better than you.”

“He was weak.”

“You murdered him.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“He chose his ending.”

Claire whispered, “You cut his brakes.”

Richard looked down at her.

“Caroline.”

“Tell him.”

“Quiet.”

“Tell him what you did.”

Richard pressed the blade closer.

“You never knew when to stop.”

Claire laughed weakly.

“Just like Mom.”

His face twisted.

“Your mother was a coward.”

A voice came from behind him.

“No, Richard.”

He froze.

Evelyn stepped from the shadows.

For the first time in twenty years, husband and wife faced each other.

Richard stared.

All color drained from his face.

“Evelyn.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Her eyes moved from Richard to the woman behind him.

“Mom?”

Evelyn began crying.

“Hello, Caroline.”

Claire made a sound I will never forget.

Not a word.

Something deeper.

A child’s grief escaping an adult body.

Richard loosened his grip for one second.

That was enough.

Claire slammed her head backward into his face.

I lunged.

Daniel swept Richard’s legs.

The knife skidded away.

Federal agents stormed the platform.

Richard was surrounded.

He laughed.

Even with guns pointed at him.

Even handcuffed.

He laughed.

“You think this ends with me?”

Chen stepped forward.

“It ends for you.”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

Then Claire.

Then me.

“No.”

His smile returned.

“You still don’t know who killed Thomas Bennett.”

My father.

I stepped closer.

“You did.”

Richard shook his head.

“I ordered people to frighten him.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“I wanted the evidence.”

Richard smiled.

“But I didn’t kill him.”

“Liar.”

He looked at Claire.

“Ask your wife.”

Claire stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard’s smile widened.

“The night Thomas died, someone else was in his car.”

I felt cold.

“Who?”

May you like

Richard looked directly at Daniel.

“Your mother.”
