Chapter 12: Walter’s Final Truth
The farmhouse was silent as Margaret opened the first letter.
Everyone gathered around her.
Emily.
Daniel.
Robert.
Even Thomas.
For the first time, the man who had caused so much pain was sitting quietly, waiting for the truth too.
Margaret unfolded the paper.
My dearest Margaret,
I have spent my entire life trying to protect you.
But I now understand something.
A person cannot protect someone they love by hiding the truth forever.
Her hands shook.
She continued.
The day Emily was taken was the worst day of my life.
But there is something I never told you.
Margaret stopped.
Emily looked at her.
“Mom?””
She looked up.
“This is about that day.””
Nobody spoke.
Margaret continued reading.
Thomas was not alone.
My brother did not act by himself.
Margaret felt cold.
She looked at Thomas.
He lowered his eyes.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
The letter continued.
There was someone else involved.
Someone who convinced me to believe Emily was gone.
Someone who knew exactly how to break our family apart.
Margaret’s heart raced.
“Who?””
She read the next line.
Her fingers went numb.
Because the name was not Linda.
Not Thomas.
Someone else.
Someone she never suspected.
Emily saw her reaction.
“Mom?””
Margaret couldn’t answer.
Daniel took the letter.
“What does it say?””
Margaret slowly looked up.
“It says…”
Her voice cracked.
“It says the person who helped Thomas was not the only one responsible.””
Thomas looked surprised.
“What?””
Margaret stared at the page.
Walter’s words continued.
The person who started this was someone much closer.
Someone who knew our family.
Someone who knew our weaknesses.
The room felt heavy.
Thomas stood.
“No.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You knew?””
Thomas shook his head.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Robert looked at him.
“Then what did you know?””
Thomas hesitated.
“I knew someone encouraged me.””
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Margaret.
And for the first time, he looked afraid.
“I never knew her real reason.””
Margaret stood.
“Her?””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who is she?””
Thomas looked toward the photograph on the table.
The photograph of Walter.
“The woman who told me where to find the hospital records.””
Margaret waited.
Thomas whispered:
“Evelyn Carter.””
Emily froze.
“My mother?””
Nobody moved.
The woman who raised Emily.
The woman who had seemed to help.
The woman who brought the truth back.
Could she have been part of the lie?
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Thomas looked at her.
“I’m sorry.””
Emily stood.
“No.””
Her voice was stronger.
“My mother loved me.””
Margaret looked at her daughter.
She saw fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
Because Emily had already lost one family.
She couldn’t lose another.
Robert opened his folder.
“There is something I need to show you.””
He removed a document.
“This was found with Walter’s records.””
Margaret looked at it.
“What is it?””
“A financial transfer.””
She read the name.
Evelyn Carter.
The amount was large.
Very large.
Emily stepped back.
“No.””
Daniel looked at the paper.
“When was this?””
Robert answered.
“Thirty-nine years ago.””
The same year Emily was born.
Margaret felt the room spinning.
“Why would Walter have this?””
Robert looked at her.
“Because he was trying to understand what happened.””
Emily shook her head.
“My mother didn’t do this.””
Nobody answered.
Then her phone rang.
Everyone looked.
Emily checked the screen.
Her face changed.
“What is it?””
She didn’t answer.
She slowly turned the phone around.
A message appeared.
From Evelyn.
*I know you found Walter’s letters. You need to hear my side before you believe everything.*
Margaret stared.
Then another message appeared.
*Please come alone.*
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Emily looked at him.
“She’s my mother.””
“She’s also connected to this.””
Emily looked torn.
Margaret reached for her hand.
The first time she had done so.
“Whatever happens…”
Emily looked at her.
“You don’t go alone.””
Emily’s eyes filled.
“Mom…”
Margaret squeezed her hand.
“I lost you once.””
A pause.
“I won’t lose you again.””
Outside, thunder rolled over Redwood Falls.
And somewhere across town, Evelyn Carter waited.
May you like
Because she had one final truth to reveal.
A truth that could destroy the last piece of Walter Doyle’s legacy.
