Chapter 11: The Brother’s Confession
Margaret had imagined this moment thousands of times.
Not this exact moment.
Not this house.
Not this old man standing in front of her.
But she had imagined meeting the person responsible.
She imagined anger.
She imagined screaming.
She imagined asking why.
But when Thomas Doyle stood before her, all she felt was exhaustion.
Sixty years of exhaustion.
“You’re alive,” she whispered.
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question came out before she could stop it.
Why pretend to die?
Why steal a child?
Why destroy a family?
Thomas looked away.
“Because I was ashamed.””
Margaret almost laughed.
“Ashamed?””
Her voice shook.
“You were ashamed?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Careful.””
But Margaret raised her hand.
“No.””
She looked directly at Thomas.
“I want to hear him.””
Thomas slowly walked downstairs.
He looked nothing like the man Margaret remembered.
The confident businessman.
The charming brother-in-law.
The man everyone trusted.
Now he was just an old man carrying the weight of his own choices.
“I never wanted Walter to find out.””
Margaret stared.
“Find out what?””
Thomas looked at Emily.
“That I was the reason she disappeared.””
Emily’s face hardened.
“Don’t say disappeared.””
Thomas lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
“You stole her.””
The words hit him.
Because they were true.
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
Margaret watched Emily.
Her daughter was stronger than she had ever imagined.
Thomas sat down.
“My father left the property to Walter.””
Margaret remembered.
“He was angry.””
“Yes.””
“And you wanted it.””
Thomas nodded.
“I thought I deserved it.””
His voice became quieter.
“I was jealous of Walter.””
Margaret frowned.
“Why?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because everyone loved him.””
The answer surprised her.
Thomas continued.
“He wasn’t rich. He wasn’t powerful. But people trusted him.””
He looked at the photographs on the table.
“He helped everyone.””
Margaret said nothing.
“And I hated that.””
Daniel shook his head.
“So you destroyed his family?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I made one terrible decision.””
Emily stepped forward.
“One?””
Thomas looked at her.
“I know.””
His voice broke.
“There is no excuse.””
For the first time, Margaret saw something she never expected.
Regret.
Not enough to erase what happened.
But real.
“Why did you tell us you died?””
Thomas looked at the floor.
“Because Walter found out.””
Margaret froze.
“When?””
“Twenty-five years ago.””
Robert nodded.
“That matches Walter’s records.””
Thomas continued.
“He came to my house.””
Margaret stared.
“And?””
“He didn’t yell.””
That surprised her.
“He didn’t call the police.””
Thomas swallowed.
“He just asked me one question.””
“What question?””
Thomas looked at Margaret.
“He asked, ‘How could you hurt someone who never stopped loving you?’”
The room went quiet.
Margaret felt tears forming.
That sounded exactly like Walter.
Thomas continued.
“I expected him to hate me.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“He offered me a chance to confess.””
Margaret frowned.
“Then why didn’t you?””
Thomas looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You were afraid?””
“Yes.””
“Of what?””
Thomas looked at Emily.
“That she would hate me.””
Emily’s expression didn’t change.
“She should.””
Thomas nodded.
“She should.””
A long silence followed.
Then Margaret asked:
“Why are you telling us now?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Because Walter came to see me one last time.””
Margaret froze.
“When?””
“One week before he died.””
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas continued.
“He told me he was dying.””
Emily whispered:
“And?””
“He said he had forgiven me.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
Of course he had.
Even after everything.
Walter had forgiven.
Thomas looked at Margaret.
“He told me he couldn’t leave this world knowing you hated me for something you didn’t understand.””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don’t understand.””
Thomas reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small key.
“This is why he came.””
Robert stepped closer.
“What is that?””
Thomas handed it to Margaret.
“Walter left something behind.””
Margaret looked at the key.
“Where?””
Thomas pointed toward the back room.
“There’s a locked box.””
Daniel moved immediately.
Inside the room was an old wooden chest.
The key fit perfectly.
Margaret opened it.
Inside were letters.
Hundreds of letters.
All addressed to one person.
Her.
But before she could read them, Thomas spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Margaret looked up.
“What?””
Thomas’s face turned serious.
“Walter wasn’t only hiding Emily’s past.””
A pause.
“He was hiding something about your marriage.””
Margaret’s heart sank.
“What?””
Thomas looked at the letters.
“He wanted you to know why he made the choices he made.””
He pointed to the top envelope.
“Start with that one.””
Margaret picked it up.
The handwriting was Walter’s.
But the date shocked her.
It was written only two days before he died.
The first line read:
My dearest Margaret,
There is one final truth you deserve to know about the day Emily was taken.
Margaret stopped breathing.
Because after all these years…
May you like
She finally had the answer.
But she wasn’t prepared for it.
