Chapter 13: The Document Worth More Than the Mansion
At 6:42 p.m., Rebecca Lawson called me with three words I never expected to hear.
"Don't go home.""
I was standing in Emily's kitchen, staring at the anonymous message on my phone.
*Marcus knows you found Schedule B. He is coming for the last document tonight.*
"I wasn't planning to," I told Rebecca.
"But someone just warned me that Marcus is coming to the mansion.""
"Then we need to make sure you stay away from him. I've contacted the authorities about the threats and the disputed property documents. Do not attempt to retrieve anything else yourself.""
"What if he destroys Schedule B?""
"We have already documented the original deed and the archive materials. If another document exists, we will establish its location through lawful means. You are not responsible for putting yourself in danger to preserve evidence.""
I wanted to believe her.
But I couldn't stop thinking about the handwritten notation on the deed.
*See Schedule B—Beneficial Ownership and Reserved Assets.*
Evelyn had deliberately left something out of the documents Marcus had been able to access. Whatever Schedule B contained, it was important enough for him to spend years searching for it.
And now he knew I was looking.
Emily appeared in the doorway, holding two mugs of tea.
"You're doing that thing again.""
"What thing?""
"Staring at your phone like it personally insulted you.""
I gave her a tired smile.
"Someone threatened me.""
She put the mugs down.
"Lauren.""
"I'm safe. Rebecca knows.""
"That's not what I asked.""
I looked at my sister.
"I'm scared.""
The admission felt strange. For days, I had been angry, determined, and too busy chasing documents to acknowledge the fear underneath everything.
Emily pulled out the chair beside me.
"Then let the people whose job it is to handle this situation handle it. You don't have to prove you're brave by doing something dangerous.""
She was right.
For five years, I had mistaken endurance for strength. I had covered Marcus's financial problems, accepted his excuses, and convinced myself that love meant standing beside someone when everyone else walked away.
Now I understood that sometimes strength meant refusing to follow someone into the fire.
At 7:15 p.m., Daniel arrived at Emily's house with his attorney, Michael Grant.
He looked exhausted.
"My father's estate records have revealed something else," he said after Rebecca joined us by video call.
Michael opened a folder.
"Arthur Hayes established the Whitmore Preservation Trust several years before Evelyn's death. The trust was intended to preserve certain properties and assets, but the surviving records indicate that its purpose may have been altered without proper authorization.""
"By Marcus?"" I asked.
"Possibly. We have evidence connecting him to the trust's transactions, but we're still tracing the money and identifying the relevant beneficiaries.""
Daniel slid a document toward me.
It was a copy of an old trust schedule.
Several lines had been blacked out, apparently by someone making a partial copy. Beneath the redactions, I could still read a reference to a property preservation fund and a list of assets.
The final entry mentioned a *beneficial interest reserved for Lauren Mitchell*.
I stared at the words.
"Why would Evelyn put my name in a trust controlled by Daniel's father?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. My father may have been acting as a trustee, an intermediary, or something else. We need the complete instrument.""
Michael nodded.
"That's why Schedule B matters. It may identify the reserved assets, but we cannot assume what those rights mean until we locate the full document and review its legal effect.""
I leaned forward.
"Where would Evelyn have kept it?""
Daniel looked toward Rebecca's image on the screen.
"She may have kept it with the original deed.""
"Then Marcus could have found it when he accessed the storage unit.""
"He took a box," Daniel said.
"We don't know whether it contained Schedule B.""
My phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I answered on speaker.
A man's voice filled the kitchen.
"Lauren Mitchell?""
"Who's calling?""
"My name is Gregory Shaw.""
The room fell silent.
Daniel stood so abruptly that his chair scraped against the floor.
Gregory continued.
"I believe we need to have a conversation about Evelyn Whitmore's estate.""
Rebecca immediately signaled for me to remain calm.
"What do you want?"" I asked.
"To prevent you from making a mistake that could ruin several lives.""
"You're calling to threaten me?""
"No. I'm calling because Marcus has become reckless. He was supposed to resolve this matter quietly.""
I felt a chill move through me.
"Resolve what matter?""
"The property. The trust. The documents Evelyn left behind.""
"Did you tell Marcus to date me?""
Silence.
Then Gregory sighed.
"Marcus was instructed to establish a relationship with you because Evelyn had selected you as a potential beneficiary. The intention was to gain access to information, not to create the situation we have now.""
My hands began to shake.
"You arranged my relationship?""
"I arranged an introduction. What happened afterward was Marcus's decision.""
"Did you know he was married to Brianna?""
"No.""
"Did you know he forged my signature?""
"I suspected he had used documents improperly.""
"Did you know Evelyn was afraid of him?""
Gregory paused.
"I knew Evelyn had become difficult to deal with.""
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
"Gregory, this is Daniel Hayes. Why did my father authorize the transfer of $420,000 to the Whitmore Preservation Trust?""
Another silence.
"Daniel," Gregory finally said, "your father believed he was protecting an investment. He did not know what Marcus intended to do.""
"Then why was Marcus listed as an authorized signatory?""
"I can't answer that.""
"You just said you knew what the arrangement was.""
"I said I knew part of it.""
Rebecca intervened.
"Mr. Shaw, you should direct any further communication through legal counsel.""
Gregory ignored her.
"Lauren, if you want the truth, you need to understand that Evelyn's estate contained more than a mansion. There were financial assets, preservation rights, and a private agreement that could affect several people.""
"Where is Schedule B?""
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
"Perhaps. But there's something you should know. Marcus believes the document names you as the ultimate beneficiary of the preservation trust.""
I stared at Daniel.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
Gregory continued.
"If that is true, the missing document could expose everyone who handled the trust, including people who believed they were acting legally.""
"Then why are you calling me?""
"Because Marcus intends to take the document tonight. If he finds it before you do, he may destroy it.""
The call disconnected.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Rebecca spoke through the laptop.
"We need to notify the authorities immediately and preserve the recording. Lauren, you are staying where you are.""
I nodded.
Daniel sat down slowly.
"My father may have been involved in something he never told me about.""
"Then help us establish the truth," I said.
He looked at me.
"I will.""
At 8:03 p.m., Rebecca received a message from the authorities.
Marcus had been located near the mansion.
He was carrying a document case.
And when officers approached him, he claimed he was retrieving his own property.
But the document case contained something no one expected.
A sealed envelope addressed to me.
May you like
Inside was a note written in Marcus's handwriting.
*Lauren, if you want to know who really owns the mansion, ask Daniel about the night his father died.*
