Chapter 11: The Man Buried in the Callaway Family Cemetery
Nathaniel couldn't take his eyes off the photograph.
The gold ring had a distinctive black stone surrounded by three small diamonds.
It was Richard Callaway's wedding ring.
The ring Nathaniel had watched being placed inside his father's coffin.
"Maybe someone inherited it," I suggested.
Nathaniel shook his head.
"No. My father had it engraved. The inside carries his initials and the date of his marriage to Eleanor.""
Thomas looked at him.
"You're saying nobody else could own that ring?""
"Nobody.""
Eleanor's voice suddenly came through my phone.
"Rose? Nathaniel? Where are you?""
I answered.
"At Willow Creek. We found out Mom was taken away.""
There was a pause.
Then Eleanor asked:
"Did you see the photograph?""
"Yes.""
Her breathing changed.
"Don't go to that house.""
Nathaniel immediately took the phone.
"Mother, why?""
"Because Richard is there.""
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
"How do you know?""
"Because I received the same photograph twenty minutes ago.""
Thomas stepped closer.
"Eleanor, is Richard alive?""
She didn't answer.
Nathaniel raised his voice.
"Mother!""
Finally, Eleanor whispered:
"I saw him three nights ago.""
The silence was deafening.
"Where?"" Nathaniel asked.
"At the cemetery.""
Nathaniel's face hardened.
"You're telling me you saw my dead father walking around?""
"I know what I saw.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of him?""
Eleanor began crying.
"Of what he would do if he knew I had told you.""
Nathaniel ended the call.
He looked at Marcus.
"Get the car.""
Marcus nodded.
"Where are we going?""
"Callaway cemetery.""
The family cemetery was located on a private property outside Manhattan. A stone gate marked the entrance.
We arrived shortly before midnight.
Marcus brought four security officers.
Nathaniel walked directly toward the large marble monument bearing his father's name.
Richard Callaway.
1948–2025.
I stared at the dates.
"Maybe the ring belongs to someone else.""
Nathaniel ignored me.
He knelt beside the grave and examined the soil.
Then he noticed something.
The earth near the headstone looked different.
Recently disturbed.
"Marcus.""
The security chief approached.
"Sir?""
"Get a shovel.""
Within minutes, two guards were digging.
I stood beside Thomas, my heart hammering.
Finally, the shovel struck something hard.
A wooden surface.
The guards carefully removed more dirt.
Then the coffin became visible.
Nathaniel stepped forward.
"Open it.""
Marcus hesitated.
"Sir, are you certain?""
"Open it.""
The lid was lifted.
A terrible silence followed.
The coffin was empty.
No body.
No clothing.
Only a small envelope resting on the velvet lining.
Nathaniel reached inside.
He pulled out a photograph.
It showed Richard standing outside a hospital.
Beside him was a younger Grace.
And between them stood a man I recognized from the picture Thomas had shown me.
James Mercer.
On the back, someone had written:
The three children belong to James. The Callaway empire belongs to the truth.
Nathaniel's hands trembled.
"Where is my father?""
Thomas looked at the empty coffin.
"Maybe he never died.""
A sudden sound came from behind the trees.
Marcus spun around.
"Who's there?""
A figure stepped into the moonlight.
An elderly man wearing a dark overcoat.
His hair was white.
His face was thinner than in the photographs.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
Nathaniel staggered backward.
"Dad?""
Richard Callaway smiled.
"Hello, son.""
I couldn't move.
The man who had supposedly died a year earlier was standing in front of us.
Richard looked at the empty coffin.
"You shouldn't have opened that.""
Nathaniel's voice shook with anger.
"You let us bury an empty coffin?""
Richard shrugged.
"It was necessary.""
"Necessary? You made Mom believe you were dead!""
"I gave your mother a chance to live peacefully.""
Nathaniel stepped toward him.
"You stole my sister. You destroyed Grace's life. You changed hospital records. And now you're standing here pretending none of it happened?""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"Your mother was never meant to tell you.""
I moved forward.
"Where is my mother?""
Richard looked at me.
For the first time, I saw recognition in his expression.
"Rose Carter.""
I felt sick hearing him say my name.
"Where is Grace?""
He adjusted his coat.
"She's safe.""
"Let me see her.""
"Not until we finish our business.""
Nathaniel clenched his fists.
"What business?""
Richard looked at me.
"The ten million dollars was only the beginning.""
I stared at him.
"Why did you send it?""
"Because I need something from you.""
"What?""
He smiled.
"Your signature.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Sir, you're coming with us.""
Richard laughed.
"Do you think I came here without protection?""
Three black vehicles suddenly appeared beyond the cemetery gate.
Men in dark suits stepped out.
They were carrying weapons.
Marcus immediately ordered our security team to form a protective line.
Richard looked at Nathaniel.
"You're making this unnecessarily difficult.""
Nathaniel shouted:
"You are not taking Rose anywhere!""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Then perhaps I should explain why your sister's signature is so important.""
He removed a document from his coat.
It was a copy of the original Callaway family trust.
Three names appeared at the top.
Rose Carter.
Nathaniel Callaway.
Daniel Mercer.
Richard pointed toward the signature lines.
"Your biological father left the entire company to his three children. But the inheritance can only be transferred when all three heirs sign together.""
I stared at him.
"Then why do you need me?""
Richard's expression turned cold.
"Because James Mercer is still alive, and he has already signed.""
Nathaniel looked horrified.
Richard continued.
"Daniel signed yesterday.""
He turned toward me.
"You're the only one left.""
May you like
Then he leaned closer and whispered:
"And if you refuse, you'll never see your mother again.""
